Were you guys playing on pussy level or something? Those bastards in the library were almost unkillable - although I was carrying one of the higher-end assault rifles (forget which) and the mid-grade "standard" shotgun. The auto-shotgun might have made life easier.

Still, I loved that level. I heard so many bad things about it but when I did what Miller said, mixed with a judicious application of running and hiding, I found it was a great challenge but not especially difficult - and tense as hell. I can see where it could go very wrong for players determined to kill or run through it (which is probably most of them, so I suppose that's a problem) but when played "properly," it's a fantastic experience.

I stopped halfway because the stealth sections were trial and error and poorly designed. I was having fun until then. Maybe I could get back into it, but whatever.
What stealth sections? Are never explicitly told what to do, so if you use stealth and it fails, that is your problem then. If you think you could do better going in guns blazing, do that. The game let´s you choose your own playstyle.
And I actually thought the stealth was pretty good...It´s not easy, but if you know what to do, you can avoid almost every single human enemy in the game.

OT:
I´m glad this gets a sequel, 2033 was very good, but the book held it back somewhat...you couldn´t really transfer it´s story to a game, or you´d be stuck with lot´s of uneventful, monsterless traveling about.
Let´s see what they do...but if they do what Gearbox did with Brothers in Arms, then meh.
Hope they actually know "what fans liked about the game."...At least I hope it´s the same things that I liked about it XD.

Maybe you were...the enemies get "weaker", IE, absorb less damage, the harder the setting is set. This is offset by the fact that you find less ammo, less everything, and you and your comrades absorb less damage too. So it actually get´s more "realistic" the harder the setting is.
But yes, Librarians are "hard to kill", altho they all bow down to my mighty death glare, and if they don´t and dare an attack, well, they eat some sticky grenades and KNIFES!
If you have the Uboyneg (Semi-Auto-Shotgun) with Bayonet, USE THAT...they somehow are alergic to cold steel. The normal trench knife also does wonders.

To quote the Wiki:

Easy

By far the easiest game difficulty, as the name suggests. Ammo is plentiful, and found magazines are often full. Artyom can take a lot of damage, but enemies are hard to kill.

Medium

A challenge to new FPS players, and a breeze for experienced players. Ammo is found in large quantities and you won't run out of ammo easily. Enemies do not pose a major threat, and mutants are fairly easy to kill.

Hardcore

A real challenge. Enemies can kill you with ease, but are equally easy to kill. Mutants are harder to kill and do almost twice as much damage to Artyom. Ammo is scarce, but weapon damage is high.

Weapon damage is high, and enemies are easier to kill. Although Mutants get a buff, as far as I can tell Nosalises and Hunters are not among them. They go down with a couple of well aimed shots...

Same goes for Ranger Easy and Ranger Hardcore, which just account with less ammo stockpiling, and adjust the damage resistance and damage dealt very drastically.
