This thread is for all things Metroid.

Which Metroid game is your favorite and why? I would have to say fusion. while I have played 1, 2, Super Metroid, Fusion, and Prime 1 and 2, and loved all of them, most have one or two items that drive me nuts trying to get, where Fusion doesn't seem to. Of course me being an obsessive completionist, I can't not get all items.

What would Super Metroid and Metroid: Fusion be like from the 3-d first person perspective of the Prime games?

Which Metroid would you say Samus was the most powerful? (assuming 100% item collection)
If we include end game super weapons (i.e. hyper beam or phazon beam)
If we don't count such weaponry.

If we are including the end game weapons, I would have to say Super Metroid, they hyper beam destroys everything and Samus is invincible while firing it.

If end game weapons are not taken into consideration, I would have to say Fusion Samus. the highest amount of energy tanks, 20, like Super Metroid the beams are combined, though without the conflict between plasma and Spazer/wide. She can carry 250 super, ice, diffusion missiles and 74 power bombs. Though the various beam/missile combos from the Prime games do pack quite a punch. Varia and Gravity Suits, along with space jump, speed booster and screw attack for unlimited maneuverability.

Favorite Metroid is Fusion. However, only other games I've played are Zero Mission, Hunters, and some of Prime, along with watching playthroughs of Other M and Super Metroid. And read the manga.

As for the other questions, I don't think I'm qualified to really comment. Honestly, my relationship with Metroid is weird, where I know more about the series from Wikitroid than actually playing the games.

Metroid Prime for me, no contest.

I just love the way that game absolutely drips with atmosphere. The sort of slow deliberate pacing, the subtle way in which the story is told through scanning and environments, the brooding music, it just all adds together for one great memorable gaming experience.

I was gonna say this too, yes. It's a textbook example of using the strengths of the medium. It gives the player so much agency in tackling the world around it, in how much of the world and story you want to experience.

I'm just going to ramble for a bit.

I've only played the 2D games. I'd love to play the Prime games. Other M not so much.

Favourite is Super Metroid. One of my favourite games of all time, and I don't even have any nostalgia for it. Great design, great music, great atmosphere. Just an all around great game.

Zero Mission comes in at a close second. A fantastic re imagining of the first game. All of the additional content was worked in perfectly.

Fusion is pretty good but a bit too restricted/linear for my liking. Removal of single wall wall jumps and infinite bomb jumps was a bit disappointing. I still like it though. Has fantastic atmosphere.

Metroid 2 was my first Metroid experience and I didn't play another Metroid game until many years later. Definitely the black sheep of the 2D games but I like it. There is some nostalgia there

Metroid. The one that started it all. A pretty tough game, very easy to get lost in. There are some design choices I'm not too fond of. Starting with almost no health after you die and the huge amounts of dead ends. It can be a bit frustrating at times. Overall it's a good game though.

1) Super would be my favourite. I might say Prime, but the Chozo Artifact hunt drags just like the Temple Keys in the second game, and the final area has some situations more annoying than challenging. I do love the detail put into the areas and scans, and I hope that mechanic makes a comeback in future Metroids.

2) Dunno, but I remember hearing a while back that someone was making a 2D remake of Metroid Prime using Super's graphics engine. Hopefully it hasn't gone the way of Metroid SR388.

3) Samus feels like she's at her strongest in Super as well, but then again in Corruption she is able to spam Hypermode, making her nearly invincible and enabling beam and missile weapons just as strong as the Maternal Rage Hyper beam at the end of Super. If the two versions were to battle at full power, I don't doubt that MP3 Samus would win. It's flat out stated in Fusion that while losing the infected portions of her suit has increased her agility, allowing some new moves like climbing and easier wall jumping, her suit also offers far less protection despite having more Energy Tanks- a fact that becomes abundantly clear around the halfway mark when suddenly everything inflicts half a tank or more in damage, and the SA-X takes off several:

I've sampled the original NES Metroid, it was adorable.

Super Metroid perturbs me with its constant habit of trapping me in sections and having me spend over a half-hour figuring out how to escape an area. If Samus is the most powerful in Super Metroid than I aint feeling it.

Metroid Prime is my favorite with its glorious and varied environments, the freedom to explore, the way Samus handles, and all of the awesome equipment that forms the feeling of being a top-teir space-era bounty hunter!

Metroid Prime 2's boss battles were far more creative and fun, and Sanctuary Fortress is by far my favorite environment in the series, but I didn't like the handling of the new light/dark weapons, and the rest of the environments were awfully dull rocky and dusty settings.

I just got the Metroid Prime Trilogy setup for Dolphin and am rockin' this awesome joystick+mouse combination that I engineered. I've never played Metroid Prime 3 before. I expect it to be great.

I'll probably catch some flak for this but my favorite is probably Metroid Prime 2:Echos. Most Metroid games give you this sense of isolation and loneliness and most of them pull it off well however Echos simply does it best. Everything down to the atmosphere of the world hates you,the only allies you have number one moth man who can't do much and a bunch of video voice mails. All of it heightens this dark terrifying atmosphere that the game strove for and made your eventual rise in power all that more satisfying. It has it's problems,I'll be the first to admit Torvus Bog is the worst level in any Prime game but the atmosphere it creates along with the still excellent game play from Prime make up for that.

Super Metroid by far. I reckon it's Nintendo's masterpiece.

The way it sets up each section is something unique and still original in itself. And I believe it's style is incredible. To be able to make a game dark and serious, yet still have vibrant colours with great detail is something I don't see very often. Also, the designs of every character look mean and make sense, while later 2D Metroids come of a little too cartoony for that.

Basically I'm saying Super Metroid out does the rest in execution, design and re-playability. It does it all perfectly for me, though it is very easy now after playing it more than 15 times, so I have to limit myself.

Fusion I like and I don't mind the objectives, but it never had me puzzled on what to do or where to go next, and I found the dialogue so dull that I wish I could skip it.

Metroid Prime is my second favourite because it's atmosphere, music and sounds almost compare to Super Metroids, but it has some damning moments and flaws that make me think twice before replaying it. Such as the chozo ghost mini bosses that pop up way too often, making the room dark so it's annoying to move around. And the 3 (it's always 3) teleport around everywhere very quickly with an attack that stuns you for a second. I hate them! They're not even hard, it just takes awhile to nail them all.

Then there is the part where you need to backtrack to find all these chozo key things to open up the temple. Unfortunately it can be a long trip and it isn't challenging so it feels like a chore, the first time I played it especially.

but the biggest problem with Metroid Prime is the movement. Unlike Super Metroid where you received plenty of upgrades to move quicker and almost fly, you only have the double jump in Prime. So when you are backtracking through all the large, long and high 3D rooms with many platform segments, it becomes really tedious.

The other Metroid games don't do anywhere near enough for me to compare them.

----------------------------

Which is the most powerful? No idea, never though about it. I thought the special beam at the end of Prime was the coolest weapon though.

I've played Fusion, Zero Mission, Prime and Prime 2: Echoes.
Got Super Metroid on my Wii U, will get around to that.

My favourite of the ones I've played is the first Prime.
The atmosphere is remarkable, and it looks great for a game from 2002.

The small effects, too. Exiting a body of water and drops slide down your visor. Walking through steam fogs it up.

The whole scanning mechanic, and finding out the backstory of the world as you explore it, it's all brilliant.

There's a reason Metroid Prime is my favourite game of all time.

Well, the only Metroid game I actually played (and completed) was Metroid Prime... Twice on GameCube and one on Wii where one was a 100% run and another was with friends taking turns with the Wii... Other than that, I've seen LPs of Super Metroid and Metroid Prime 2: Echos with also seeing a few speedruns of the formal...

With that said, I remember watching, I think, X-Play lay out the, at the time, current timeline of the Metroid series, which fascinated me how more consistent it was than The Legend of Zelda at face value...[footnote]I still haven't read the manga, though...[/footnote] Also, I love the Wavebuster beam...

It really is a triple-threat match between the original Metroid, Super Metroid and Metroid Prime. I can never really decide between the three, though Metroid Zero Mission is also a standout favorite too. They all have great things to offer IMO.

Metroid (NES): What I love about this game is that it is really one of the first games that drops you into a world and doesn't give you a whole lot of direction or exposition. It kind of holds your hand a bit at first then ramps the difficulty up quite well. Wonderful game all around and I love the "glitch" exploration pieces as well and semi-secret rooms scattered about various areas (bomb-jumping with doors and wall clipping).

Super Metroid (SNES): Took the concept from the first game and added so much more, and beautifully realized. All around solid game that one can spend days exploring and such.

Metroid Prime (Gamecube): What can I say about this game except that Ninty really hit a homerun by combining the elements of the original's exploration and fusing them with a first-person perspective. Beautifully rendered and still looks great IMO. Plus that Ridley fight is so damn epic... Pants-shittingly awesome... wait what?

Bonus - Metroid Zero Mission (GBA): A retelling/reimagining of Metroid (NES) with more Super Metroid-like mechanics and some major additions to the content. Expressly the transition from the original's final fight to the "epilogue" that was not in the original. I don't necessarily think of it as an "epilogue" but rather a wonderful extra adventure following the end of the original story... so yeah I guess it really is an epilogue. Great ending fight too.

People like to bash Ninty for sticking with their IP's (for the most part) and being cautious when introducing new ones, but I feel like they do a lot of longview thinking and do tend to deliver great games in their IP's. There are a few flops like Other M (shudder) and IMO the Kid Icarus 2nd entry. I loved the original and the 3DS game is nowhere near as great :(.

So yeah those are my favorites with a bit of thoughts why. I can't choose between them really because if you sat me down with any one of them I'd happily resume the adventure from wherever I'm placed. Absolutely love those games.

I've played all of the Metroid games except for Other M which I have resolved to never play, ever, just nope, no, Other M, nope, all of the nope.

My favorites are hard to pin down as I love them all in their own way. Super Metroid and Zero Mission score high for me, as do all three in the Prime trilogy. I dislike the original Metroid and Metroid 2: Return of Samus for a very simple pair reasons, stiff controlls that make the whole game feel stiff, and the floaty damn jumps in those games. Some purists love it, but for me it's just irritating. I love Fusion to death, but it's linear style really just kinda sucks in my opinion, and oh god the story cut scenes, those are just awful.

In Which Metroid game is Samus the most powerful? No clue. Though I lean towards saying Samus is most powerful once she gets the Fusion suit fully upgraded.

On a side note, my favorite Metroid game of all is a fan remake of 2, Another Metroid 2 Remake, it's just amazing, it's so fluid and solid in the controls, and to my mind Metroid 2 had the best story. The fan remake just makes the story even better.

Having played every Metroid game except Hunters my favorite is without a doubt Metroid Prime. While I may be a bit bias since it was my first Metroid game that game had it all, atmosphere, level design, diverse and challenging enemies, and a fun array of weapons. The scanner was also a very good way to flesh out the lore of the game. While there were plenty of challenging parts I don't think there was any part that made me want to tear out my hair in frustration (looking at you Echoes).

As for who is the most powerful, I would have say Corruption Samus is the strongest, at least in terms of end game weapons. Out of all the end game weapons I think the Hyper mode at the end is the strongest.

Now excluding end game weapons, I'd say its a toss up between Corruption and Prime (the first one). Even without the massive boast Hyper mode gets in the final level of Corruption, Samus still has a lesser (but still powerful) version of it along with the her usual array of weapons. However, while Prime Samus my not have the raw power of Corruption Samus she does have a more diverse array of beam weapons which gives her more of a tactical advantage.

I've played the original Metroid,Super Metroid,Metroid Prime 1,2 & 3,Metroid Prime Hunters,Other M and the forgotten game in the series Metroid Prime Pinball.

Of those my favourite is easily Other M.....Nah not really(although I didn't think it was anywhere near as bad as some people made it out to be). It's a toss up really between Super Metroid and Prime 1 for my favourite

On a side note why do I have so much trouble spelling the word Metroid.Almost every time I type it I spell it Metriod and then have to correct it

Metroid Fusion, because I love the tense survival horror feel the whole thing has.
I tried Super Metroid, and the controls feel way too floaty to me, and I just can't get comfortable playing it.

This, this, and more this.

[sub][sub]Did I mention this?[/sub][/sub]

That said, I haven't played the third one, Corruption, yet, so who knows? It may surpass the first, but the bar is set about as high as it can be.

I have never finished a Metroid game. I have played Super which I found extremely boring and really did not like the art, locations, design choices and controls, I will admit I did not play it long due to the severe dislike I had of the game so maybe I should give it another shot someday because my opinions have changed before like with FFVI. Also this game was stupid expensive cost me 60 pounds back in the day which was 10 quid more than the next most expensive ones (this was one of my 2 games a year back then so I was very annoyed with this game).

Next one I played was Prime and I really liked it and I got pretty far but it ended up feeling like a chore so I never finished it is one I definitely mean to go back to and try again though at the time it looked incredible and I am sure it still looks great now.

Prime 2 hated took it back almost straight away it just everything I liked about Prime.

Prime 3 I have had for ages and have not played more than 30 mins so cannot really say if I like it or not but the initial impression was certainly more favourable than 2.

I do keep meaning to get other M as since I am not a huge fan of classic Metroid I may actually like it and even if I end up thinking it is garbage he game is dirt cheap now anyway. As for when she is at her most powerful I have no idea.

Fusion would probably be my favorite. Iunno, the SA-X and style of the game is just awesome.

Most Powerful? Hell if I know.

I haven't played the 3D ones because I don't have the requisite console.

My experience is with Metroids one through four. (That is to sya, Met 1, Met 2, Super Met, and Met Fusion.)

To answer your questions...

{1} Metroid Fusion is my favorite. I like science fiction and horror. The first three Metroids are adventure games with a good backstory and their own personal atmosphere. The fourth one is a horror game. The planet you cleared of Metroids previously now has a rampant and viral lifeform spreading unchecked. You, the top bounty hunter in the cosmos, have been infected by it and your suit stripped away - piece by piece - for reasons of trying to save your life (As opposed to an arbitrary reason like usual). Cured by a supposedly-miraculous Metroid culture, you now go back to the research station where all the samples from the planet were taken...because something has gotten loose. You don't even SEE SA-X at first, just evidence of it. But then, the X Parasites start to take over the whole station, which you're damn-well stuck on for the time being, hunted by a creature that can instantly KILL YOU because you're part Metroid now and are vulnerable to the cold. Imagine being trapped on a station with an ARMY of John Carpenter's: The Thing, and that a number of the monsters have frigging super power. And remember, there were TEN, TEN FRIGGING SA-Xs in reality, their danger apparent even when Samus has most of her power back.

{2} Well, I think it would be awesome, but hard to do. Super Metroid would probably be made to code, but Metroid Fusion needs to have darker and edgier claustrophobic pants-wetting-inducing terror. Make the body horror graphic with every X Parasite transformation. Make us feel the isolation. And DO give us blood-pumping, dangerous, one-on-one kick-ass battles with our deadly foes.

{3} The most powerful Samus... Well, given the fullness of the story, Samus is a Chozo-altered-and-trained human super-warrior in a deadly powersuit who is - upon the end of Metroid Fusion - part Metroid and having devoured every aspect of her old suit BACK from the SA-X that doesn't kill her from cold power. In short, she has ALL of her power and can devour life from other beings. Seriously, if she can eat the most-adaptable creature in the known universe - and the X are crazy-good - what hope does anyone else have?
