Well this is a terrible idea. I want to look however I want. Not that I have anything to hide. If I lost anymore weight I'd stop existing. I should actually be gaining 3 pounds to be normal, but seriously who cares if we want to look different then how we really are?

If I want to be batman(woman) why can't I?

But I like my avatar just how it is... it's like a plasticine version of me. And can be repetitively squished, for funsies!

I don't want summat out of Uncanny Valley on my xBox... especialy if it's pretending to be me!

EDIT: We really are deviating from the point of the article. Care to agree to disagree?
I think we'll have to. I'm fairly certain that nothing you say will sway me and it's quite possible the same applies to you.
That's the internet for ya.
And I wouldn't change it for the world.

Actually? I would. If I could have the world and all it took was changing the internet, I would so change it.

Whoa, hold on there. Are you saying I'm not an orangutan.
I was once asked if I wanted to save the Orangutans by someone from Friends of the Earth or some other hippy group.

She was cute, almost made me want to sign up to see if I could flirt my way into her pants and then leave.

Almost.

Tune in next post for another random anecdote from Amnestic's life. Same bat time, same bat channel.

For some strange reason; this does not bother me in the least.

I'm intrigued that MS would think that an idea like that would even remotely appeal to a skittish market like there is today. I mean, come on, isn't that point of playing a game, to escape reality?

Still a neato idea though.

Doesn't bother me. My Xbox Avatar already looks very much like me, and if I can I usually try to make characters look like me. So I actually think this sounds kinda cool.
I doubt they will make it mandatory anyway.

It appears that Microsoft wants to build an avatar system that reflects us not as we want to be seen, but as we actually are.
Worst. Idea. Ever.

Quite apart from the fact that it then advertises you to stalkers, turns everyone into a camwhore and if you think the level of online bullying is bad now...

Hmmm, well I don't really try and present myself much differantly than I am IRL for the most part so I suppose it wouldn't be that big a deal in those terms.

I dislike the idea on principle however because I feel one of the advantages of the internet is anonimity when you desire it. There are pros and cons to it, but most of the cons are simply that relatively anonymous users prevents corperations and even the goverment from controlling information as much as they would like to. Your typical company would like to be able to take a hammer to a lot of their critics, which they can't do when someone is anonymous. Offline a big company can typically go after someone saying something they don't care for with charges like "slander" and "libel". With the amount of money a big company can feed into a legal team it doesn't much matter if what is being said is true or not. This is one of the reasons that for all the garbage circulated, a lot of people use the Internet to spread information that would be difficult to divulge IRL. I think right now people understand that just because something is on the Internet does not nessicarly mean it's true, but right now all of the unfettered information allows them to come to their own conclusions.

Some might think that stripping away the masks might help with certain "physical" crimes like people luring children for sex or whatever. However I think that in general it turns into a craps shoot as other things will simply become easier. For example with this kind of technology camwhores are going to have a field day. Not to mention that especially when dealing with teens not all of them are "victims" when it comes to the pedophille stuff as a lot of them use the internet to experiment and such. I can see this technology making it even easier than before for some 14 year old girl to shop herself around and trade pics, sex acts with friends, etc... for items purchused off of services like Amazon, or even cash through things like Paypal. You'd be surprised how big an issue that kind of thing can be, "kiddie porn" isn't just produced by pimps, depraved parents, and slobbering freaks, but by kids who think it's a "daring" if safe way to act grown up and get the things they want without any actual risk (which is not the reality of things).

Also looking at what people did with the Second Life Avatars, not to mention the existance of "games" like "Naughty America Online" and "Red Light District" just imagine what we're going to see for custom animations and such for this style of avatar given time if it goes live.

Basically, I can see some benefits to it, but I think there are more negatives. Both in terms of removing anonomity/privacy options, and in the way I can see this technology backfiring big time and leading to child protection issues and stuff that we haven't even thought of yet.

I mean geez, we have luddites all over the world (Germany, US, Australia) freaking out about the levels of sex and violence in games now as stupid as that is. We haven't even protected expression at this level, the last thing we need to do is blow more brains when someone decides to say start taking the avatars of people he doesn't like and raping/torturing/etc... them. Even just the image of them. We saw stuff like that in second life, so we'd see it here, except now it would be photorealistic.

Which would you rather be represented as online?

1) An optimised version of what you would like to look like
2) An accurate version of what you actually look like in reality.
3) Something else entirely like an Orc, a Dragon, an Elf or some other craziness.

If you picked 2), it's a pretty good guess to say that you're lying out of your arse.

Microsoft can patent it all they want. My prediction is that this product bombs and bombs hard.
Speak for yourself mate, lol. I'm lying out of my arse.

Call me strange, but my avatars are always me.

Maybe because I am rougishly good looking...?

Actually, i could go for option 2. I mean, i look decent enough and lets be fair here, it cuts down on me having to try and represent me with their settings.

But what i don't like is them looking at my health records or anything. Last thing i want to see is an online represenation of someone with severe syphilis

"An undesirable body weight could be reflected in an overweight or underweight appearance for the avatar. An unhealthy condition could be reflected in an unhealthy pallor, posture, etc.,"
This is what bothers me most. "Congrats, you've got diabetes or cancer, or any other ailment/condition that's out of your control. Your avatar now has jaundice, a hunchback and cold sores all over it! Enjoy."

Last thing i want to see is an online represenation of someone with severe syphilis
qft. Nightmares!

also qft. Faceb- err, Stalkerbook, meet gaming. No thanks.

As long as they ask before taking information I don't see the problem. Now I can tell who is a fat-ass or 12yr old and feel better about myself when they inevitably kick my ass in a game... you know because I dont look like a foot.
