I'm not surprised that Microsoft are saying Home is bad. They're not likely to say "Oh yeah Home rocks. You should all go out and buy PS3s because Live's terrible in comparison". They're going to bad mouth it.
Let me just say I haven't spent enough time in Home to pass judgement on it, and I'm not familiar enough with Live to make a comparison between it and the PSN.

Also does anyone know if Microsoft said anything about Miis when they came out?

Actually what is the difference between Live and PSN? I don't have an Xbox so i'm not really familiar with the differences between them.

From what i've seen PSN and Live have pretty much the same basic features: Connects you to other players for games, chat & messages, store to download stuff. Does stuff like Home and Life with Playstation count as part of the PSN or seperate applications?

I really don't care if you think it's clever or not, I just hate Fanboys like y8c616 .

home is a second life kinda thing, you can walk around, go to a friends place, enter games together, run around game levels and so forth
the "new" xbox live experience is your avatar standing next to a wall with NO interaction with anyone else, oh wait sorry you can look at your friends standing next to their walls
Live's use of avatars in the NXE (argh, sounds like a boy band dammit) is "iconic", in that they're really just more elaborate userpics... however, they do use them in a more sophisticated way. The biggest change is that the avatars group together to show Parties, showing who's with your Friends; tag that with the box art for the game they're in, and you can see at a glance who you want to join up with. I find it quite handy, now that I've had time to get used to it.

Home looks to be a more "virtual world" representation, doing a quite different job in that respect. There's some external meaning to the virtual space; it's not just an indication of who's with who. It's not something I'd go and seek out, myself, but that doesn't make it any better or worse than Live NXE.

Is it more than nothing? Then its clearly overpriced.
I disagree. Live is easily worth the one cup of coffee a week it costs me, if for no other reason than being less toxic to me than the coffee... joking aside, though, I'm willing to pay the buck-a-week to get Live's uptime and cross-title support. People complaining about the price are blowing it all out of proportion, IMO.

I know it was in development for at least two years, and what it's become is not the humbled and focused application it began as. In short Home is another Second Life that acts as a gateway to games and has a lot of mini games and puzzles within it (this is something a lot of people miss). For example there are locked doors that you have to figure out how to open and when you do there's goodies inside. (If you care) They can give away gifts and product using promotional codes, host group chats, you can use Home as lobby, stuff like that. Is it necessary? No. Is it mostly a chat room? Probably. Otherwise it's a 3D interface to a lot of the same PS3 and PSN functionality. Is it more free content? Yes. As for the comment about the PS Store not having much content, you must not be tracking the updates. Dozens of downloads are released each week (free and pay, but more free than pay content). That's right dozens each week, and that doesn't count the video store. They are announced on the Playstation Blog if you don't believe me.

And for the record, all of the consoles target what is called the early majority, meaning they don't do anything cutting edge, they target the masses so they will always both be behind the curve and target the masses more than niches. So yes, XBL and Home will probably never be what hardcore gamers such as yourselves think they should be. What you think they should be can be found on the PC and/or the internet, not an appliance like a game consoles (unless a game developer produces an independent Home type application, which is possible because the PS3 supports just about anything).

Wow, a Microsoft official saying derogatory things about a competitor's probably-superior product. Never heard of that happening before.

To all who believe that Microsoft's avatars are rip offs of Miis:

Actually, if there is anyone guilty of ripping anyone off here it is Nintendo. Anyone who has ever used MSN messenger (back when it was actually called that rather than Windows Live Messenger) should be familiar with the several types of customisable avatars available for that. Pretty much all of these were roughly as sophisticated as Miis, just without the 3D graphics and integration into games.

Here comes the killer, especially for those of you who think it is in some way naive or idiotic to defend Microsoft on this one. The 3rd party avatar that was endorsed by Microsoft for MSN Messenger was called the 'Wee Mee'. This was before the gamecube was even released, let alone the Wii. Now, I'm sure most people have already figured out where I'm going with this, but just to spell it out, replace the letter 'e' with the letter 'i' and you have Nintendo's oh so original 'Wii Miis'.

It's pretty short-sighted to call any kind of avatar system a rip off of another, I mean you may as well say that one clothing manufacturer is a rip off of another. They all allow for an expression of individuality, but that system is interpreted and produced differently from one creative outlet to another. However, if people are going to lay into MS for ripping off Nintendo, just remember that Nintendo couldn't even really be bothered to change the name.

On the subject of Home, I like the idea, it seems like a very unneccessary luxury but a luxury nonetheless. When it comes down to it, NXE is about providing a community of avatars integrated within a system focused on online play, and Home is the same idea but based around a glorified lobby system and with the ability to go online shopping 'in person' if that makes any sense. Both are valid approaches, they're just different from each other. As for Miis, well, they don't really fit into this argument in any way other than the blinkered use of them to bash MS, as the Wii really doesn't have IMO a worthwhile online service. It's just too limited, only a handful of games have fully fledged online play, and if I want to see a weather forecast I'll use that crazy tv service that I pay a monthly fee for.

There's a lot of bitching coming from the microsoft corner. 'We did this first, we'll last one day longer than they will, they're lame and backward.'
I lose more and more respect for them with each new smug outburst.

Actually, I think Microsoft are right. Home was delayed so much and held back. I think it actually was in development from since the PS3 launched, was it not?
This.

People waiting this long for a graphically enhanced IM program?

I thought people bought a gaming system to play games, not 'deck out' their virtual apartments and sit in a virtual chair discussing games they could be playing.
If anyone bought a PS3 for home, they did it wrong.

Also, people are giving too much of a shit about home. Just use it for clan meetings or when you are bored, and then leave.

-and cleverlymadeup summed up this crap as well

Microsoft group product manager Aaron Greenberg didn't mince words when commenting on Sony's recently released [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/88052-PlayStation-Home-Enters-Open-Beta-December-11] Home service for the PlayStation 3, referring to it as outmoded technology and saying there's "a huge gap" between Home and Xbox Live.
ok the funny part about this is this

home is a second life kinda thing, you can walk around, go to a friends place, enter games together, run around game levels and so forth
the "new" xbox live experience is your avatar standing next to a wall with NO interaction with anyone else, oh wait sorry you can look at your friends standing next to their walls

yes in comparison there is a HUGE gap and that's because live is so outdated now

i think someone should swing by m$ with the romerocopter and put Rick Romero on the job of reporting about how m$ doesn't think sony is up to snuff
