Too bad that their new project is going to rip the fanbase apart and put both at risk of failing.

Besides, he hasn't said on wether the game has been growing all the time or if this is just a tiny fluke in a steady decline.

after wasting 50+ bucks on Warhammer Online, I'm not buying an MMO I can't try out first.
I was 'lucky' enough to get on the beta for Warhammer, so I had a preview of its shitness. LotRO is, frankly, on a totally different planet - it's really quite lovely.
Actually, beta was pretty awesome... but that's because it was only up to level 20 and we didn't notice how lame it gets after that. And how stupid leveling becomes.

They've offered a free trial for well over a year now. 10 days is a pretty good length for a trial. And yes, you get to keep your existing characters if you upgrade your trial account.

That's the thing... it was really immediate and rewarding for the first hour or so, but how's an MMO ever going to sustain that for weeks and months?

You're talking about AoC, aren't you? Leveling past the 20s in LOTRO is fine. The zones are great and beautiful, the are a few instances at that level, and lots of quests in more then one zone.
Uhm. No. We are talking about WAR all the time, try to keep focused.

The important question: When will middle earth get big enough to the point where we have to call it upper earth?

You see, on Yggdrasil, Earth was in the middle of the trunk, between nifilhiem, helheim, and the rest of the lower worlds and....oh nevermind. It doesn't.

Can someone please tell me why you cant play as a bad guy in LOTRO? you could be a orc or a goblin or a wannabe-Ring Wraith. but unfortunately you have to be the good guy.
Not entirely true. You can play as an orc, goblin, spider, or warg...but you are restricted to the PvP zone The Ettenmoors when you do. It's not all mindless PvP action either, there are numerous quests to complete when you're playing a monster character. But you will get ganked a lot if you play solo. And I do mean a lot...

Anyways, I'm happy LOTRO is expanding. I've had a lifetime account for well over a year now, but I don't play it anymore. I've just grown tired of MMOs. I can't see myself playing LOTRO again...unless they release a new server. In that case, I may venture back over to the game. New servers are always fun. I'm always up for starting out fresh.
Yeah I stopped playing like a month ago so i could try world of warcraft. and i have to say LOTRO is just another knock off of WoW. but in a different world.

I'm glad someone has the balls to stand up to WoW, and the abilities and gameplay to pull it off.

Though, I haven't actually played it, I just think WoW is overrated and it irritates me how nothing else comes close.

Why not just say that Blizzard is Unicron. It's better than the multiple voltron analogy and simpler. We're all nerds here, if we get Vontron, we'll get Unicron. >:)

For those non-nerds Unicron is the transforming planet (who is actually sort of the devil in the "lore") from Transformers The Movie. :)

It's much larger than a multiple Voltron assembly.

The multiple Voltron assembly would most accuratly be SoE's lineup of properties you can play under one membership fee (Everquest, SWG, etc...) which is what it did to compete.

You actually can play these in the PvMP area known as Ettenmoors. I know several people who do nothing but play monsters. With the quests and pvp aspect of the area it is quite fun.

I have to say this quote is probably one of the funniest things I hear all the time. Games being knock offs of WoW. Blizzard rarely has it own thoughts when it comes to WoW. I can point out hundreds of features in WoW that started in Ultima Online, Everquest, Asheron's Call 1 & 2, Dark Age of Camelot, Lord of the Rings Online, and even Warhammer.

What Blizzard does tend to do is enhance these features to add more pizazz. Prime example is WoW's achievement system. This was in many games before WoW such as LOTRO deeds system or Warhammer's (can't remember name of it), or heck lets even point out the Xbox achievement system. They took the best, in my opinion, of all the previous games or game systems and combined it. Is this bad? No, but not a pioneer in the field of MMO's by any means.

Because the game is supposed to emulate the heroic style of Tolkien's writing.

Also, if they were to make evil races playable, they would have to remove the entire "Dread" function from the game, because "Dread" I.E., being around Naz'gul, would INCREASE your hope, considering they were on your side.

It's against the spirit of the game and the mechanics. That's why.

So I guess they're not going free with micropayments any time soon? ;)

Last time I gave LOTRO a spin, I liked the environments, but it played too much like another EverQuest clone to give this MMORPG burnout hope.

I don't get it. How come the only game to stand up to a fantasy-themed MMORPG is a fantasy-themed MMORPG? Does everyone like tolkienesque/dungeonanddragonish fantasy better than everything else, except me?
