I haven't played it yet, but it seems appealing. Saying that it's unique doesn't seem quite right though. Dwarf Fortress allows you to do a lot of the same (not all of it, but Dwarf Fortress is a whole other genre). Still, it's not exactly a common thing to see.
I think I'll pick it up some day soon. Hopefully before it enters final version and gets more expensive :D

The free version IS dull. It just hands you everything. In the proper game you have to craft your own tools to do anything, and you need to mine for higher quality materials. Also, there's a day/night cycle (monsters spawn at night), and natural caves full of resources and monsters.
Ok, I've done some more research and I know what you're talking about now. I was thinking of survival mode, which does have a free demo version although you have to search for it. But actually having to put your skills to the test to survive... That sounds quite interesting.

Honestly find Minecraft a lot more fun to watch than it is to play. I've put a good few hours in across several games, but I just can't really get into it. Sandbox games aren't really my thing anyway, and this hasn't changed that - I don't have the patience to make really cool stuff anyway.

That said, some of the stuff people have made is incredible. I've probably spent just as long as I have playing it (if not longer) just looking up some of the incredible stuff.

The fact of the matter is, the demo is exactly what a demo should be, for the sake of giving gamers a piece of how the engine runs and how it feels- like a practice golf swing. It's not as if people can't look on YouTube anymore and get a glimpse of the paid version. Minecraft Classic illustrates the potential creative free-for-all you can do with it, the expansiveness and grandeur of the engine itself. Not only that, you can also make test builds of structures you may also plan to make in the full version, or just make buildings or landmarks, like a glass spiral staircase. It could even be regarded as an artistic tool, to a degree.
Acutally, no. The demo is terrible for demonstrating what the full game will be like, since it misses out on quite a lot of features. I for one am only interested in Minecraft for the survival mode and having to work before I have access to all the resources in the game. The demo does not have these things, or at least the demo on the main website doesn't. Yes, I was able to research these things to find out what they were like in the full game, but I only did that because I knew the other features were definitely in the game somewhere. Other people might not already know anything about the game, and may therefore disregard it because the demo doesn't show these other game modes.

You most clearly forgot to mention the heart shattering agony of creepers. Excuse me while I grieve over my broken replica of the Chichen Itza.

Well, Shamus, I am prepared to blow your mind with the concept of combining Minecraft with that OTHER game you adore. I present to you:

Chimecraft.

...I'm going to run away very quickly now.

Bought this game a month ago and I haven't really done much else. Such grand plans that will never be completed because they keep growing. There literally is no limit to what you can make

I read somewhere that with enough exploring this game can get to roughly 7x the size of the world before having issues with remembering it all

Right about now I'm pretty sure that Persson will be literally wiping his arse and taking baths in money. I mean according to this very site it's making $350,000 a day, all going to one man, and not a company.

I mean, I love the game, but, my God, he's going to have his own Playboy mansion soon. What, with all the Youtube people, the TF2 blog and the Escapist giving him free advertising.
Yeah, I'm thinking it's time to start charging him for advertising. It's great that he made a game so many people love, but giving him front page stories everyday makes it really easy for him to make a profit with no advertising budget. Hell, I think the new Castlevania is one of the best games of the last few generations (and know quite a few who feel the same way), let's see more stories about that and give it some more sales.

For as many people who hate Activision making lots of money (while having to actually pay for advertising and a full staff) they have no problem with this guy making 2 million bucks a week with all the free ads he gets daily.

That's called Word Of Mouth. People telling other people about it.

A sample of things people have made in Minecraft:

A gigantic roller coaster [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kwr79lPRrFI] (note that everything except the base terrain (and probably some of that, too) was "hand"-made by the player.

Enourmous Explosions [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SEtISGnzsdQ] (When Shamus said it takes a while to bring down a mountain, he's apparently referring to how long it takes to stuff it with TNT.)

A Waterslide [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Ot39sgEMic].

Rapture [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fp2PVqhfguY]. And by the same token, Columbia [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ggNKbsBj7s].

A 1x1 scale model of the U.S.S. Enterprise [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GRVVm0a1F1I].

Computers [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGkkyKZVzug]. Yes, real live working computers in the game.

The Earth [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LWPk5zlKAEM] (Through this is naturally scaled down, the actual world generated in a Minecraft game can actually be two to three times the size of the Earth, relatively speaking.

To get another idea of the size and creative potential, here's An isometric view of Penny Arcade's Mulitplayer Server [http://www.fusedcreations.com/adam/colrap_render_013.jpg]. You can see towers, cities, the above-mentioned Rapture, Floating Islands, A Trade Federation Landing Force, and much more.

I followed the link and tried out the demo. I built myself a small house and quite a big wall of stone with a tower-thingy going up to it. Then planted some flowers. Built a tree that was hollow.
It was quite interesting, and i didn't notice how 30 minutes had passed. Too bad i didn't figure out how to build doors...

I swear creepers are evil incarnate.

They will always, without fail, ambush you when you least expect it. Usually while you are standing right next to the building you JUST finished constructing and before you have a chance to yell "Oh shit, not agai--", they blow the living daylights of you and put a crater the size of Manhattan in your new building...

edit: I just found out about Minecraft a few days ago when I read the piece here on the escapist about the guy who built an ALU in Minecraft. Ofcourse I'd heard about it before, but had no clue what the game was about. So I watched some other vids on Youtube of a guy playing survival mode and after seeing the stuff you could do and the freedom to build and explore, I really couldn't care less about the graphics. I went ahead and bought a premium account and I've already infected one friend as well. :p

It's an insanely addictive little game, at least if you love exploring, building and just letting your imagination get the better of you.

The only downside of Minecraft is that after a while I tend to start talking to the chickens and the cows...

One little thing. Minecraft is not exactly 100% new idea Shamus. I don't know if you ever heard about that one little indie MMO that went completely under the radar, called Wurm Online, Notch aka Markus Persson used to be a dev there.
It pretty much allows you to do fancy things like digging/rising/molding terrain, building castles, houses, towers, etc you can wage wars, you can preach one of religions, breed animals, hunt animals, craft junk, pave roads... pretty much everything and it has no quests and no levels. It's as close to sandbox MMO as they get, and some say it makes Eve look easy and newbie friendly.

I once mined into a cave with teeny holes in the roof. I wondered what they could possibly do. Take a guess....

I didn't like it.

Hear me out before you lynch me.

I KNOW it's indie and I KNOW it's powerful but it just didn't grab me. Perhaps it's growing up in a boxed environment like Ant Attack and 3D Monster Maze, but it just seems like effort poured into say "Look at my effort".

I'm sure thousands, if not millions, look at it and say "WOW", but I'll stick to Dwarf Fortress.

Crazy idea here...what would happen if we merge Minecraft with Dorf Fort?

I checked to see what's it about. The website requires registration to see how much the game costs.

Fail. No purchase.
If I remember correctly, it's 9.95 euro. That's about $13.86 or £8.69. Very cheap for what you get, and there's going to be a big update on Halloween, including a Hell level.

[edit] That minecraft Oct 31st update in full here: Halloween Update [http://www.minecraft.net/boo/]
