I found it hilarious when Gabe Newell talked down about Windows 8 ruining the open nature of PC Gaming. Because it translated to:

"Hey Microsoft! Stop trying to put certification, DRM and moderation to the PC! That's MY job!"

A noble stand.
A noble temper tantrum is more like it. Notch is a huge drama queen with a huge audience.
It's going to be the same thing that every gamer issue is. Windows 8 is going to release, and the sky isn't going to fall. At least Notch talking down the increased moderation of Windows 8 is a little more acceptable than, say, Gabe Newell demonizing Microsoft bringing DRM and moderation to the PC when he made billions doing the exact same thing.
There's a difference between trying to make an OS a closed source system (which Microsoft is actively trying to do with this "Metro Store" bullshit), and a fucking GAME DISTRIBUTION SERVICE.

Good God, usually it's the opposite way around, with people sucking on Valve's dick far beyond rationality or reason, but the hate I've seen for Valve on this forum is ridiculous.

One is a fucking OPERATING SYSTEM, it means your PC cannot DO ANYTHING without one. Unless you want to learn a whole new language (Linux), or use a Mac which means you can't do fuck all with your own system, there aren't a lot of alternatives.

i can honestly say...i've owned xp loved it, have used 7 and think its awful and own and sadly currently use vista, and...compared to xp? vista and 7 are glue eaters....they should have just kept bringing updated software for xp....but nooooo lets keep making "new and better things" its like the iphone..if you have iphone 1? you have iphone 5 -.- bring back xp -.- and as for notch and valve saying boycott it? i am in total and full agreement.

It doesn't matter if notch doesn't get certified - it's not like you can't run uncerted code in windows 8

At least I hope not.

untill microsoft decides that "we are not greedy enough, lets ban all programs that dont get our certification and then force driver developers to develop only for windows 8 (as we did with vista) so everyone is forced to use w8"

the main reason i am sitting on a windows 7 is because the hardware doesnt have xp drivers, thank you microsoft :(

It's not microsoft's fault your hardware has no XP drivers.

Jesus guys stop using XP it's bloody ancient and definitely not secure - it doesn't support over 3.somethingGB of ram without being a total turd (XPx64) and it doesn't have the DX11 API. It doesn't get security updated like it used to either.

"b-but I need a fast netbook-OS"

Then man up and use a GNU/Linux distribution with xfce. If you need the speed from XP it's probably not for gaming cause of the aforementioned reasons.

If you absolutely cannot handle a different GDE then use classic theme on Seven.

There is nothing wrong with DX9 (well not more than with 11) and you hardly ever need more than 3gb of ram. i got 4 and most of the time 2 stands empty and useless. it may be ancient but its still the best we got. yes it doesnt get security updates anymore because since vista Microsoft decided to ban all xp sales and everything to do with it. it IS Microsoft fault i cant use XP.
