Windows 8 isn't a problem because it will fail. Not necessarily because it's not good, but because since Windows 95 Microsoft have always released two platforms based around a similar design concept and the first is always a failure and the second is always hailed as a return to form. 98 was better than 95, XP better than Millenium Edition, Windows 7 better than Windows Vista and equally Windows 9 will be better than Windows 8 and a lot of people will just wait until 9 is released
Only one problem with your hypothesis, you got a few things screwed up, the original release of 98 was balls, it was only better than 95, when 98SE the second edition came out it fixed a majority of the problems and further patching made it almost entirely flawless in operation, I mean sure it still had limitations and problems, but all software does.

Also Millenium edition, was a further extension on the 95/98 engine, also known as the 9x engine(I wonder why*sarcasm*), 2000 which was released the same year as ME was the upgrade on their office series also known as the NT series, NT3, and NT4 for instance, it was the NT5 engine, a new NT series OS, XP was when Microsoft officially abandoned the engine in their 9x OS' and moved to NT only, it was essencially NT5.1 an upgraded NT5 engine with a shinier more people friendly less office looking shell(essencially a new paintjob) but it came with a buncha problems which were mostly solved by the release of the first two service packs.

Vista was released early, with far less money spent on testing than they should have spent, and due to the clunkyness of their new interface, created to compete with the MacOS interfaces in the newer stuff, trying to appeal to a wider audience essencially, it used a ton of your system resources to just exist, therefor making the computers that were common at the time strain under it's load like a cat trying to carry a piano, that and the significant number of fixes that they had to apply to it to render it propperly usable, were immense, hence the gifting of a free W7 update to a large number of users who had to suffer with the innitial release, and W7 built on the engine basics of Vista was essencially rebuilt again, with a ton of inefficiencies chopped so it actually worked, while not flawless, it's still a decent OS.

Now, W8 they are trying once again to capture the market share dominated by Apple, except this time they're building a blanket OS for tablets(to compete with the iPad, and the large number of decent to awesome android tablets on the market) and for PCs so that they can have a cut of the app market craze and while they're doing this they are essencially ignoring all of the progress they made in the meantime with what they did with W7.

That is why most people are angry, it's not like ME(which during a live interview on TV wouldn't do anything but bluescreen and wouldn't even function long enough to even show anyone the interface) this is a failure in principle rather than a technical problem, they're essencially calling their main market chumps and moving on to a system because they see other companies making money on a similiar product type.

They seem to agree that Window 8 provides an unpleasant vista into the future of PC gaming

In all seriousness, that's not far from the truth.

I've always said Microsoft works in twos.

First they release an OS, running on a new platform architecture, that's buggy, unstable, and just plain awful. Then, two or three years later the "new" OS comes out to much praise. Except that it's the same as the last OS, just with a majority of the bugs and instabilities fixed.

Just look at their release history:

Windows 95 - broken and unstable
Windows 98 - same architecture as 95, but stable
Windows ME - broken and unstable
Windows XP - again, same architecture as ME but functional
Windows Vista - third times not the charm; broken and unstable
Windows 7 - same exact architecture as Vista but, gasp!, functional (except for audio support. windows 7 HATES audio hardware)

As you can see, history all but dictates that Windows 8 will be a buggy, glitchy, unstable, half-assed mess of an OS. So...the comments from Notch and Gabe Newell, while insightful, are irrelevant to me. I had no plans on even considering Win8. I'll be waiting for Microsofts next OS to judge their contemporary architecture.

Well, since generally every other Microsoft OS tends to be absolute shit, and Win8 is on the shit end of the cycle, I think I'll pass on this. Windows XP just recently lost support from Microsoft, so I don't see 7 being dropped any time soon and hopefully by then Microsoft will have already released the next decent OS. Here's to hoping Win9 will be good. If not, gaming seems to be making a leap towards supporting Linux so I could just switch to that. Would save me $ in the long run.

How about we wait until this thing is released before we all jump on the "Hate Windows 8" train? Isn't it still in the beta phase? which is normally the phase where the most things get changed? -.-

When this is released, i actually hope it's good. I'm sick of people jumping to conclusions about something they haven't even used.

nothing really its just the first step down a path making windows a closed OS.

imagine if microsoft could charge and had the option to ban/alter/change/allow ever single thing you do on your pc. thats where the path leads. maybe they will shut down you tube and force you to use their version , steam could be denied a licence. its a ways off and scare mongering to a point but nows the time to act if we wait till were bent over the MS desk desperately looking for the lube its going to be too late.

Basically MS are going to leverage the fact they have a total monopoly on PC OS to get away with stuff they couldnt with a competitor, hence the scramble to get linux or anything else up and viable.

See, i had Vista for a few months and i had no problem with it. I actually didn't mind it, Only changed to 7 because my computer caught a virus, and said virus pretty much stopped me from doing anything.

Let me get this straight....

Microsoft reached out to Notch, offering to help him get certified for the new OS. Notch says no. Notch then, after declining Microsofts offer to bend over backwards to bet his game certified, runs around screaming about how much the new operating system sucks.

This screams childish asshole to me.

Not only that, but this certification feature already exists in Windows 7. There is a prompt warning users with confirmation before they open an uncertified driver or program.
There is no screaming, there is no running. There is simply this short post:

"Got an email from microsoft, wanting to help "certify" minecraft for win 8. I told them to stop trying to ruin the pc as an open platform."

Tried the consumer preview thing, thought it was basically windows 7 with crap I didn't want attached to it (A store front, some strange desktop designed for touch screens because of how popular desktop touch screen computers are...)

Well I think that Microsoft has just seen App Stores and thought, "You know what, if we had one of them that was bigger and more in your face than Windows Live that'll totally work." So are now forcing everyone to have their store tacked on to the OS. This is bad... You know why it is bad, take this example;

A student wants to create a small free to play game, he has no money to fund this project but makes it anyway, gets to want to publish this game.

In Win7 world he would put it on IndieDB or something similar for free, get feedback maybe get a small community interested in the game.

In Win8 world he could still put it on IndieDB, but no one would be there... Everyone would have downloaded angry birds for 1 dollar or whatever on the Microsoft Store and never look for these obscure games. It would make things like Minecraft simply not exist, originally it was meant to be a few month project that he was doing in-between bigger projects, probably never really published costing money, definitely not as big as it is now...

TL;DR Version - Bad for indies.

Sorry if this makes no sense gonna fall asleep now...

Fair enough that he doesn't want to have to share profits with Microsoft by having his game on the app store but all this hate towards Win 8 is stupid. Users have never liked moving to a new GUI, Windows 95 had a lot of hate for the Start Menu when it came out. GUI OS's had a lot of hate in the first place from people used to the CLI. The mouse was a gimmick according to haters.

Somehow I have managed to not be an idiot afraid of change and have been making good use of the new MUI. Start Screen is brilliant. I have everything right in front of me and well organised. I can find anything I want using the new search screen. Windows 8 is brilliant. People just need to sit down, shut up and learn the new UI.

I'm with most of the people here in that I don't expect windows 8 to be very good but is it really worth boycotting like this? If I was a game developer I'd want my games to be compatible with as many OS' as possible, even ones I don't personally endorse like Apple.

There have been rumors about this. I don't know if it has been confirmed yet.

DON'T MENTION THE V WORD! That word signified a PC dark age, people are still offended by that sort of language you know.

This: from someone who actually owns the full version of Windows 8 pro!!!!

It's not to bad, in fact it runs exactly the same as windows 7 (if not better as it's more optimized to run on low spec tablets). You actually get used to the new start menu and all of the little build in apps (basically outlook spread over different buttons) are really useful and easy to set up.

Although I did eventually go back to Windows 7 to prevent any possible connection Issues at a LAN I'm going to in a week.

It isn't bad and it isn't revolutionary but for one thing I feel that the 'equation' which a lot people believe is :

Me = Bad, Xp = good, Vista = bad, Window 7 = good, Windows 8 = bad...
Is incorrect and people are assuming this without actually trying it out for the selves.

The only gripe I have is that isn't of it being sold as a full OS it should have been marketed as a more of a DLC for Windows 7 that added all of these features.. but then if MS are willing to sell a full OS for £40 (pro edition I'd have you know) pre-order then I'm not going to complain.

Oh, yeah everything worked when I upgraded from windows 7 as well.. Steam, Origin, Minecraft ect with No hassle at all. The Windows store is already up and functional and isn't getting in the way of any other digital distribution service I was using at the time.

What does this have to do with the topic?

Well I feel that these companies are making a wrong move, that's just my thoughts, steam is still going to work on Windows 8 as it Origin and as is Minecraft so it's not going to stop me to upgrade when I want to do so again. I feel that this move could alienate some users that generically want to move to Windows 8 and this also means that they could actually end up losing a "new" market and that is Windows Tablet (cause a tablet natively running .exe and game files is soooooo bad right?).

let see, my windows 7 is stable, reminds me of my old XP, works just as I planned, hasn't given me problems... really just feels like an old reliable workhorse.

Looking at windows 8, I see gimmicks, DRM, possible lockdown, a user interface completely opposite of what I am used to and want to use, is likely to be buggy and its perks don't mean jack to me since I don't use a tablet or iphone or anything along that line. So it feels like a spottily made plane.

I don't think I am gonna buy the new plane solely because it is the new thing. Anyone else want to try to fly that thing, have at it. Me, I will stick with what works for me now and only worry about upgrading when I actually need to upgrade. Why fix what isn't broken?

I see where this is going. Sooner or later, if Microsoft gets their way, all the games on their platform will be required to have windows live. Guess what that means? It means they can start charging for windows live. Too bad, I really wanted to keep gaming for at least a couple more years, but with how greedy the game industry has become, I dont think I can stomach it anymore.

As far as I can tell from my experience with Vista, it was simply the target of a massive smear-campaign.
I knew I couldn't be the only person with that opinion. I've been running Vista on my primary desktop since the first SP came out, and it's been smooth and stable the whole time. It's got a lot of the newer features that 7 gets praised for, without completely removing the parts of XP that I like; essentially it was a step forward without abandoning the foundation.

I'll never understand why Vista gets all the hate; I can only presume that it comes from a combination of those who are wiling to believe whatever they see in an Apple commercial, those who tried to run the OS on a machine not built for it, and those too impatient to wait for a service pack to fix launch issues (that's my #1 rule with OSes, always wait for the SP to upgrade, it saves a lot of hassle).

My work runs 7, so I use that everyday. At home, we have a half-dozen computers; some run 7, some XP, I even have one old machine in the corner with Win95. There's a reason my primary computer has Vista; it's simply been my best experience with a Windows OS all around.

Everyone here realizes there is an App for Minecraft on the Iphone. The Iphone people! Which is part of apple. Sorry to burst any bubbles but Apple has by far the most unfriendly OS to open based systems currently on the face of the earth. Hell Google is more OS friendly then these guys. So when the internet world gets all uppity about some scrubby news like this I'm gonna say, "Microsoft emailed you personally and you snubbed them then decided to make a negative comment about them which is hypocritical. Way to go champ you want a cookie?"

the general tone of negative comments for windows 8 goes "I hate windows 8 because When I saw windows vista I puked. The company could never possibly learn from any past mistakes and therefore the future product must be a pile of crap because I saw the beta test and hate things that aren't perfect the first time I see them."

You know why these minute problems are not discussed among the masses about MACs? Because no sane person has ever run mainframes or servers with them and so when they fail to deliver in a small aspect its a hot topic for windows PCs.

Let's at least see the damn thing before we make conclusions let alone condemn the product. And if you have a MAC and just love to scoff at windows users. Well you can tweet, post, poke, or whatever else is out there these days all you want but you still can't right click without programming your mouse to do so or buying a different type of mouse altogether.

Some important things to note, in no particular order.

1. Microsoft Smartscreen will not, in fact, bring up UNCERTIFIED messages when minecraft is downloaded, if only from it's popularity rating.

2. Gabe Newell is just mad because microsoft is going to have a store too.

3. No changes to the desktop.

4. All app stores require certification. Microsoft isn't going to make an exception and allow viruses.

I use windows 8 on a daily basis, and while I normally don't support microsoft, to be honest I find myself consistently surprised at how good it is.

Thank you for reading.
I also use Windows 8, as a student I got early access - it's basically Windows 7 with a different start screen and behind the scenes optimisations that you won't even notice/care about.

It's not another Vista, i'll put it that way. Probably not worth rushing to upgrade for, but there's nothing wrong with it that i've found so far.
