Minecraft Sells Like Sexy Hotcakes

The exact sales figures for Minecraft have been revealed, and they're pretty damn high.

We already knew mounds of cash [http://www.minecraft.net/], but just how many copies has the game sold so far? One hundred thousand? One million? Neither of those, but more than one and half as much as the other.

Mojang Specifications, which is apparently the name that Markus "Notch" Persson still refers to as the company forming [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103919-Minecraft-Creator-Forming-Own-Studio] around Minecraft, announced today that the game has sold 500,000 copies. In its alpha phase. Wow.

Let me put this in perspective. A few weeks before release, Nintendo was bragging that Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker [http://www.amazon.com/Legend-Zelda-Wind-Waker-GameCube/dp/B000084318/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1288366456&sr=8-1] had between 500,000 and 600,000 pre-orders. Though Minecraft actually lets you play right now, and a purchase is not exactly a pre-order, you're still not playing the final product. For any game, let alone an independent game still in development, to sell 500,000 copies is a smashing success. At $14 a pop, that's a lot of early revenue.

A couple of other indie companies I recently reported on were happy when they sold 30,000 [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103956-Steams-First-Indie-JRPG-Is-a-Hit] copies respectively. Persson created a truly interesting game that has caught the entire industry by storm, but to additionally sell 500,000 units is just incredible. Mojang says it will reinvest its profits back into Minecraft, with Persson recently revealing on his blog that he'll be moving into a new office with multiple employees soon.

Let the good times roll. Notch has certainly earned it.

For those who are craving some good fun multiplayer with fellow Escapists, take a look over on the usergroup!

I hope he makes the right moves from now on, i don't know if he has any other experience in game development or the managment of a game making company, but i bet this is every indie game developer in the world.

At this rate, Notch will be able to build a real house out of gold blocks.

It's not like the sales figures are exactly secret, though. They appear at the top of the page on minecraft.net.

At least 8 of my friends have bought it. I, however, have not, as it seems like something I would fall into and never return.

Congratulations is at least i can say.

Me and a couple of my friends have bought this game and play it quite regulary. Its really something fresh, next to all the COD clones and console ports.

In fact im pretty much sure im done buying those games, unless it has a truly extraordinary multiplayer - something hard to achieve after Bad Company 2.

Smashing success indeed.

Maybe they should sell cube-shaped cakes.

Word of mouth advertising'll do that too things. I bet Notch is rolling in... Paypal emails? You've got to love hearing about games being successful.

All I can say is that Perrson deserves the money.

500,000 x 14 = 7 million USD. Seven million bucks is nothing to sneeze at...

I bought this game about a month ago and I don't and probably won't regret it. I'm getting ready to gift a copy to a friend as well.

You can't beat the price for a great game. Even though the game is in alpha, it's better than most finished games I've played. And I get to upgrade for free in beta and probably when it's officially finished(plus the updates it'll likely get for a very long time). You really can't beat that.

I bought this game over a year ago, when Alpha was an idea, rather than what it is now.

Best money I ever spent.

This is what happens when you make a truly innovative and interesting game, then sell it for cheap. People buy the shit out of it.

Hum... you do realize that, as far as I'm aware, Minecraft's sales stats have been displayed on top of the website, which also includes a page with that and other data, right?

See here: http://minecraft.net/stats.jsp

Half of 100 million is 50 million, not 500,000...

OT: Still haven't tried it out yet - soon!
