Minecraft Sells Like Sexy Hotcakes

I feel like I've arrived late to the party. What the fuck is Minecraft? I know my distaste of downloading anything has meant I miss out on some of the 'major' new titles but seriously, why is everyone going on about this game?

Is it because it's new? Everyone loved Portal when it first came out and though I liked it when I played it, playing it after the hype and about three years had passed I can't really label it even as one of my best games ever.

Soon Minecraft will descend into meme territory, at which point everyone, (especially people on this site) will despise it, loathe it, and ridicule anyone who admits to thinking it's worth it, and I want it registered that I called it here first.

Ok, I thought minecraft was a game that wasn't very popular i thought myself that it only sold something like 3000 copies...but 500,000? WOW that's a lot of minecraft going around.

I don't get it. I played it and I just don't get it.

Meh, to each his own.
You need to find a multiplayer server with a decent amount of people and build civilizations. It's extremely satisfying.

One important thing for me was that he doesn't rip off European customers. He does the exchange rate between Euro and Dollar properly.

I bought it a month ago, eagerly awaiting the Halloween patch.

Smashing success indeed.

Maybe they should sell cube-shaped cakes.
and a creeper would deliver it to your door... oh, wait.

Minecraft is a fun addictive game and other developers are probably kicking themselves that they didn't take advantage of this intuitive idea earlier.

Notch needs to send Adam Montoya (Seananners on YouTube) a check for some cash. Each of his minecraft videos has 300,000+ views and is why I bought it and I love. He makes it so fun! Also I'm very excited for the direction minecraft is going. Hopefully notch will get more time to listen to community. I'm pumped for multiplayer! Like widespread online

Argh! That GIF killed my internet!

480x360 is far too much for this connection to handle...

Thanks anyway, though :)

7 million dollars!?!?! Thats great and all, but he is still making a loss due to the fact the actual price of the game is reduced until the game's official best and complete version is released. So if alot of people buy now then he is not going to make that much more when the actual price is used and only a few people buy it.
Well not everyone is Activision.
But to put this into perspective, 1mil is more then he needs in his entire lifetime, and he has 7 sofar...
Even if he let's it all go at this very point he can live like a king.

Anyway top props to the dude, he is a genius, and deserves every little bit of it.
I only wish there were more people with ideas like his.

Does anyone know if Notch managed to get his money back from PayPal [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/103385-PayPal-Freezes-750K-in-MineCraft-Devs-Account]?

If that happened to me just as my slick little indie game started turning me into a millionaire I'd be pissed.

At least 8 of my friends have bought it. I, however, have not, as it seems like something I would fall into and never return.
All the more reason to buy it my friend.

OT: I forsaw this the instant my firend showed me it. Its good to see that Notch is getting some serious money from this little endevor and he is only asking for half what he normally would.

Half of 100 million is 50 million, not 500,000...

OT: Still haven't tried it out yet - soon!
This is what the article said
We already knew Minecraft was making mounds of cash, but just how many copies has the game sold so far? One hundred thousand? One million? Neither of those, but more than one and half as much as the other.
You are right however, half of 100 millions is not not 500000. Your correction is wrong though since no-one has ever stated that.

This is a lot for an independent game however...

He cheated and used the edit button. Before it said "one hundred million".

But what are hotcakes, anyway? I don't think I've ever bought one.
Incidentally, hotcakes are basically pikelets, or smaller and slightly thicker pancakes.
