Well, that's a bit of a bummer, at least for me. I struggle to focus in open world games. I like my games like books. A bit old fashioned perhaps, but that's just the way it is.
"Reboot" may be something of a misnomer, since there's hardly any lore to reboot in the first place,
Huh, did you even play the game? There is plenty of lore in the game delivered through infomercials throughout the game as well as the cutscenes and the game itself.

So we have two different games with the same name. Awesome. Ten years from now is going to be a nightmare for someone searching for either the first or second one..

Hot damn! This is an unexpected development...

Well, bring it on, DICE! My body could not be more ready for more Mirror's Edge.
Now just imagine all of the Mirrors Edge Rule34.
No need to imagine, just google it. Plenty of it already exists. And plenty more will follow, because Rule 34.
Bah, as far as I'm concerned R34 is only good for a laugh every now and then. That's because it almost always comes across as trying so hard to be shocking... like goastse (do not ever google that). I guess it just attracts a lot more trolls than fans obsessed enough to see or draw their favourite characters naked.
Yeah, I'm with you there. Most of that shit isn't even arousing, and some of it is just a total mood-killer. I'd say "don't look up so-and-so but in reality all it's going to do is have the Streisand Effect on somebody.

Bit off topic here: nice new profile pic! I remember that episode and how uncomfortable the atmosphere of it was.

[i/]SWEET![/i] That was the one thing I hated about ME1, that it was so bloody linear. But that naming scheme... At least add a "prequelish" subtitle like Origin or something (EA/DICE do [i/]not[/i] use Origin for a subtitle. Be more imaginative than me.)

Seriously. This news is music to my ears. Not only will it be open-world, but also on the PC? Hellz yeah! This sounds like the proper response to all of the main criticisms of the first game. EA, DON'T FUCK THIS UP. Gaming needs more variety, and we also need more good female protagonists in good games.
Took the words right out of my mouth. I just hope DICE fleshes out the controls a bit.

I didn't really have issue with them like many did, but they were a tad unresponsive sometimes.

Linear levels are usually a bad thing...
I still don't understand the prevailing opinion on this forum that linear=bad.

Sure, there are plenty of examples of bad games; both new and old; that utilized copious levels of linearity to their map designs. That doesn't mean linear levels are bad by default.

Unless some of you are willing to admit open-world design is bad as well, since there are plenty of bad games with open-world structures.

AAAAAAHHHHH SQUEEE SQUEEE SQUEEE SQUEEE SQUEEE

The only thing it will take to make this work is lots of time, and DICE is ready to give the game the needed time for this.

Oh my, I think I peed myself...

Yeah, I don't like free roaming games, but, hey, this is pretty much what all gamers want these days.

Very excited for this game. Although, I don't know about Faith's new, more realistic design. Looks a little creepy somehow.

Only way this could get better is if there were some sort of Deus Ex, Mirrors edge, Remember me Cross over
I would totally play that.

OT: I'm alright with DICE forgetting the first Mirror's Edge exists. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely freakin' love it, but the story won't exactly enrich a sequel in my opinion.

What I don't understand is why they're simply calling the sequel "Mirror's Edge," I mean that's just confusing. Why not go with the tried and trusted colon/subtitle system?

Mirror's Edge: Origins
Mirror's Edge: Revelations
Mirror's Edge: Revengeance
Mirror's Edge: Chronicles
Mirror's Edge: Combat Evolved

You're welcome, DICE.

What's with all these next-gen games being free-roaming all of a sudden? First you've got all the games that're supposed to be free-roam, your Assassin's Creed/Watch_Dogs/Elder Scrolls/Saints Row/GTA/Dark Souls/MMOs, and now franchises are weirdly branching out - Metal Gear? Free-roaming. Mirror's Edge? Free-roaming. Pretty sure there's another oddball that's come up in E3, but it escapes me.

The free-roaming might backfire, it might not. That's something that I'll decide for myself. The only thing that could put me off buying this is if EA screws with the gameplay too much - the trailer was too combat oriented for my liking, I want parkour which makes me scratch my noggin and enemies who should be run past, not fought.

Man, I don't want to get my hopes up, but I really did enjoy the first Mirror's Edge. I recognized it had it's faults, but it just felt so different from the norm and I enjoy the parkour so much more in this game than something like Assassin's Creed where you just hold down a button and have all the work done for you. But then there's the EA factor. When they first made ME, it seems like they were legitimately trying to change their image. Now, it's like they're back to their good ole selves again.

Open world? Free roaming? It's not just going to be one great big hallway this time? Okay, now I'm interested again. I'd be even more interested to hear that it'll be in third-person, just because first-person platforming has always been a pain in the ass.

Oh, and lose the unavoidable gunfights. Those weren't necessary in the original game, and they're even less necessary now that damn near every game has you shooting people.

Open world?
It's sort of a double edge sword there.

The level design in the first Mirror's Edge was damn near perfect, opening it up will take a lot of work. I don't want to see the levels become "The path" and "the other stuff that you'll never see if you play the game properly"

As long as they don't go combat crazy, and especially avoid mandatory combat (Like the GOD DAMN BOAT LEVEL) I'll be fine.

YAY MIRROR'S EDGE 2! Or Mirror's Edge... again...

They better not call the third one "Mirror's Edge One"

Dammit, I don't want an Origin account!

That's basically the barrier holding me back from this whole thing.

Stoked about the game itself and also hoping Pratchett got brought in earlier than the last time. I'd like this to have more story than the last open-world game I played (Infamous).

Does everything have to be open world now? Did someone sneak a law through or something? Linear gameplay was never bad y'know...

Anyway, as long as they don't shooterise the shit out of Mirror's Edge 2 it should be awesome. I know it ain't gonna happen but I always feel as though Faith was written a pacifist. I mean the only person she kills outside gameplay was that one guy at the end who was capturing her sister and there was an achievement for not killing anybody.

Oh and could they please patch the online "who can run this level the fastest" so that all the top ghosts aren't jumping everywhere. As in mashing forward and jump moves you quicker than just running and they all exploited that once they found out.

You can put The Witcher on that list as well. As to the trailer, I wouldn't worry about that too much. Game trailers have a tendency to give a greater emphasis to combat than the games do (c.f. the Metro: Last Light campaign) because they think it gets people's attention. Running away from gunfire isn't as exciting as running into it.

so they took the part that ruined the first game (linearity to the level of "there is a way aroudn but i HAVE to run into this gun tooting soldier becuase the game told me so") and threw it away? parkour without openworld is kind of self-defeating anyway. sounds like this "good idea experiment that failed" is going to be a sucess after all.
what is this, EA being smart?

as technology progresses and our computing get faster, we are finally able to provide at least imitation of open world gaming isntead of having to confine and limit users to small colidors because the 7 year old hardware cant run any better. its a normal progression of technology, we always wanted this, now we are actually able to.

So now we have to start appending the year of release to every major AAA game?

Considering that this is an EA Game, I've a feeling that they're going to mess this game somehow. It's not a matter of whether they will, it's a matter of how and how much.

But then again, it's also a game from DICE. Say what you will about their consistent lineup of military shooters, but they're good military shooters. The Frostbite 3 engine makes the game look more beautiful than before, and the sandbox element can really add a dimension unseen in the first game.
Frostbite 3 doesn't do shit to make the game look better. Good textures and good models do. Covering everything up with AA/AF seems to be a normal practice these days, but it's really not something that, as a developer, makes you stand in a very good light.

But then again, I feel like storytelling is the weakest point of DICE's games (as you can see from the campaign modes of all the Battlefield games). The story for Mirror's Edge was weak enough, but I don't know if they're able to make Mirror's Edge 2's story an improvement from it. Also, I'm afraid EA and DICE are going to fall into the same traps as the previous game and emphasis more on fighting and combat than actual parkour.

So rather than risk disappointment, I'm just going to see what the game itself is like before falling into the hype.

The combat is the core problem. It's overemphasized and just not very good in MEdge. I feel that if you cut 90% of it out, you won't loose a thing and make the game a lot less frustrating to play. The combat sections do break up the platforming though, so DICE would need to find something else to fill the hole left from removing most of the combat. If that is exploration, that's fine by me. Also, could I please carry 2 or 3 mags of pistol ammo around with me? Is it too much to ask to use those trouser pockets for something?

And you're right, storytelling is something DICE just can't seem to do properly. Their games are mechanically really good, but without people from other studios helping with the story, I don't see it being very good.

When I saw the trailers for the first Mirror's Edge I thought it was open world, I was a little disappointed to find out that it wasn't. I can't say I'm confident EA won't strip away the original concept's novelty in favor of mass market appeal, since, you know, that's kind of their thing. But it's always worth being reminded that the original Mirror's Edge was much better in concept than it was in execution, so at least initially, I'll stay open minded to any changes in the formula. I'm interested to see how this develops, unless they add competitive multiplayer, then it's pretty much sure to be dead on arrival.

Way back, I played the demo of ME, and really didn't care for it. The free song was pretty good though. It, and the stuff from Siren: Blood Curse were the only songs/pictures on my original PS3.

I just mainly didn't like how it was in first person. When your field of view is so narrow it makes judging distances more difficult than it needs to be. In real life you don't need to look straight down to see the edge of a platform thank's to peripheral vision.

Also, what people like about parkour is DOING parkour, or watching someone win/fail at it. I didn't think there was much of an audience for NOT really doing it, AND not even seeing most of the cool stuff your character just did.

It would be like a skating game in first person, or a tap dancing game in first person. Sure you can pull off the sickest moves you've ever seen...only you can't see them.

And while it never made me queasy, at the time one of the negatives people were reporting was that it made them nauseous.

While I respect the mostly white and red style, it just made it look unfinished. Like they forgot to make textures.

Hopefully some of all of the above will be tweaked for this reboot. I honestly never thought the first game sold particularly well, so I'm surprised that they are choosing to double down on it.
