Miss America Trash-Talks Videogames

The newly-crowned Miss America doesn't like videogames very much, saying that parents should take them away and make their kids play out in the streets like she did.

Caressa Cameron, who was crowned as the new Miss America on January 30, doesn't seem to care for videogames. The 22-year-old broadcast journalism major from Virginia said during her interview at the pageant that videogames and other forms of electronic entertainment are a big part part of why the current generation of kids are so lazy. "Take away the TV, take away the video games, set some standards for our children!" she said.

Parents need to "encourage" their kids to play outside instead, she added, saying they should be "playing imaginary games with sticks in the street like I did when I was little."

I have no idea where to go with this. On one hand, it is pretty awesome outside and I'm inclined to agree that kids should spend more time running around in it. But on the other, her blanket criticism of videogames is entirely uninformed and sensational, and there's something about taking advice on parenting from a woman whose career involves looking pretty and trying really hard to sound less stupid than her competitors that feels a bit off somehow. (I do like the idea of sending kids out to play in traffic and poke each other in the eye with branches, though.)

"You can be and become anything that you want to be, even Miss America," she gushed unironically, presumably intending to encourage children to strive for excellence. It's an admirable sentiment, I suppose, but one that's counterbalanced somewhat by a statement made by Kellye Cash, Miss America 1987, that's actually posted [http://www.missamerica.org/competition-info/become-a-contestant.aspx] on the official Miss America website:

"I was a pianist, but not quite good enough to get a music scholarship; an athlete, but I didn't play a varsity sport; smart, but not smart enough to get an academic scholarship. So competing in the Miss America program was an opportunity to get a scholarship for school."

That's right, kids: When all else fails, you can put on a bikini, climb up on a stage and shake your moneymaker for Rush Limbaugh. Dare to dream!

"Don't play video games! Beat each other to death with sticks!"

She isn't even that hot anyway.

That's not true. I'm older than her and I'm lazy as hell. Also we didn't have sticks we had Sega's lock on: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sega_Lock-On

What century is this girl from?

Outside is overrated. I was outside half an hour ago when I locked myself out of the house after forgetting to put my keys in my cold weather jacket this morning (thanks outside!). It was cold, dark, and windy. Then again Lord of the Rings was filmed outside so you can give it that.

Yeah! You're right. She's 22 for crying out loud. When I was young I had my trusty C64, Transformers, Action Man, and play park nearby to entertain me without the need for sticks.

I think that ending qoute made this article, and made my day.

Oh man, yes, maybe it's easy for her, but some of us live in cities, some of us don't have sticks to play with, some of us can't go out without being almost hit by a car. (Well, if your a kid playing outside, anyway.)

But yes, I shouldn't let someone as low as this get on my nerves, I guess I'm a bit of edge due to being sick, is all.

Video games teach kids a myriad of different things, but if they try, they can be judged for their looks alone. Go fuck yourself Miss America.

Does this mean we can trash-talk morons like her? (Yes, I have a low opinion of people who group things together... wait a sec...)

This is a fine idea. Funny, and fun. To watch. Too bad that is in America and not here... we could do with some of that. Get rid of some idiots/assholes in training Get more kids active.

So what? I advocate burning down "civilized" society and eliminating billions of lives, because overpopulation is a root cause of nearly every major problem for humanity and the world. If I have to be one of those eliminated so be it.

Unless she Trash talks something that actually affects peoples lives like excessive drinking or smoking or drug abuse and wins it for talking about video games she doesn't deserve that already shameless title. Besides she isn't all that good looking any girl who needs to wear an inch of makeup to look good isn't, that's just a rule.

And frankly I'd rather my future children grow up on video games than grow up to be someone like her.

Outside is where dirt comes from, ergo I try to avoid it as much as physically possible [small](hyperbole, I did plenty of things outside as a child and was an avid camper)[/small].

Also now I feel old thanks to all the cracks about her age, blargh.

Im just impressed she can string together words into sentances.
Lulz, there are quite a lot of errors in there, which is ironic...

OT: Yeah, because everyone knows that being a model takes intelligence and charisma.

Fuck you miss America (who is actually pretty ugly, no matter which one she is in the picture).

I do believe that our youth is wasting away in front of a screen, and should instead spend most of their time outside. That parents should control their children more and should kick them out of the house to play outside for a couple hours (my parents did).

However, Miss America's opinion will only last for about 3 minutes and carry as much weight as an anorexic feather.
