Guess that whole "land of the free" thing didn't work out, eh? If I didn't know better I'd assume we were discussing a police state here.
Apparently you don't know better, because making sure people don't look at variations of CP doesn't equate to a police state. Try again, preferably without a hyperbole this time.
It's thought policing and I would call that a police state. I'll bet you loved the shit out of Minority Report.
No its not, nobody was arrested for having thoughts. He was arrested for having pictures/downloaded images.
Of things that don't exist.

Know what else doesn't exist?
OH GODS NO, THE BREASTS ARE FLAT, YOU MUST... ACQUIT.
SHUT UP AND REPORT TO YOUR LOCAL POLICE STATION FOR MANDATORY CHEMICAL CASTRATION, YOU COLOSSAL PERVERT, YOU!

You could assume that but you would be wrong, because making sure people don't look at variations of CP doesn't equate to a police state.

Naah, I like hyperboles. People respond to hyperboles. And condemning people on account of "interests", in lack of a better way to put it, rather than actual actions with an actual impact is kind of messed up anyway.
Thats fine, it diminishes your point but thats up to you.

Nope, he didn't get in trouble for having interest, he got in trouble for having actual images on his computer. That said, people already get in trouble [http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/To_Catch_a_Predator] for having these kinds of "interest".

Why would having pictures be a crime?
Because its pictures of a variation of CP.

He was arrested because they thought that him having those pictures made him a threat to real children. They are anticipating that he will molest a real child. That's thought policing, he didn't actually molest anyone and the pictures weren't of real children.

1) You clearly don't understand sarcasm.

2) No, it is not. And if that's the only rationale you have behind your reasoning, then I shall bid you good day, sir or madam, for you are closed-minded and judgemental.

Or possibly just mental.

Quite simple, it is a cartoon picture that mimics the real thing.
Grand Theft Auto is a game that mimics me mowing down pedestrians and shooting everybody on the street.

Does having played GTA make me a criminal? Given that mimicking the real thing, in your mind, is exactly the same as actually participating in the real thing.
If it does not make me a criminal, then please explain to all the boys and girls at home how my active participation in simulated murder is more acceptable than a man's passive participation in simulated sex?

Yes it mimics it which means it's not the real thing.

Yep, that I don't have any sympathy for people who look at any form of CP.

Odd....didn't you just tell me you were going to stop communicating with me because you felt it necessary to insult my mental health? Hmmm.....

The comparison doesn't hold up, because unlike real pictures of CP, its not illegal to posses real pictures of vehicular violence so playing GTA wouldn't make you a criminal.

I don't think it diminishes anything, but hey everyone's entitled to an opinion! But if simple having images like that on your computer is enough to get you in trouble then you should probably watch out yourself, because looking back at this thread I'm guessing you've already got a thing or two in your browser cache that might just land you in a tight spot if you let anyone see it.

Catch a Predator is really stretching the whole deal, though. They're chasing people who are actually out there looking for minors. Comparing the topic story to the people in that show is like comparing a person with an affection for really violent games with someone who's actually considering shooting another person. Crazy comparison, but it is a comparison. It's an unwanted activity committed by a group actively vilified by modern society, but what's really so wrong with just letting them sate their curious interest in a way that doesn't harm anyone and doesn't even have to concern anyone but them? Because we think it's wrong and that's final, no discussion whatsoever in the whole history of everything?

I actually had to pause my music to try and wrap my head around this.

Let me see if I have this straight. In your mind...;
Child pornography = Bad.
Vehicular homicide = Bad.
Something that mimics a bad thing is also bad.
Cartoon ponography = Bad.
Vehicular homicide in a game = Good.

...
