I actually had no idea that the Pandaren appeared in the Warcraft 3 expansion, but the fact that the race originated as an April Fool's joke speaks volumes.

And hey, if the fans like it, that's great, but even so I don't think anyone can argue that it's not cartoonishly goofy. Maybe I'm too hung up on the early lore but I think I prefer my Warcraft set in a "serious" fantasy realm.

Their(panda) lore had a hell of a lot of fleshing (as in, they were playable races with detailed back stories and the like) out in the RPG books and in some Vanilla wow quests and references, the lore was there for them more so than most other new races that get added in to the game, before WoW added the lore a vast majority of races had no lore whats so ever, look at Gnomes, Uncorrupted Draenei, Vrykul etc, bar one reference to gnomes in one of the games the lore for one of the first races was added and made up on the spot when WoW was released.

Also, WoW has never been full on "Serious", Dwarf, Goblins, Gnomes ogres etc etc have always added heaped spoonfuls of comic relief and "Cartoonish Goofiness" than the pandas ever will, the goblin starting zone should more than prove this, I didn't realize the serous implications of my actions when i was driving around in a sports car before playing american football with a robot and bombs.

Remember kids, Cartoonish can never EVER be serious, that is why All the Pixar and Anime films have been such colossal flops.

As usual with Blizzard betas, it will run for as long as it needs to, it will include as many players as required and there will be no NDA, so you can talk about it as much as you like, but do bear in mind that it's a beta, so bugs, errors and other issues are to be expected. Get it?
Most intelligent people understand that in a BETA there will be bugs which need working out.
Unfortunately not all beta testers will be intelligent, so expect a barrage of rants such as; "BLIZZARD DOESN'T CARE ABOUT THE FANS! THIS GAME IS SO BUGGY AND THEY DON'T GIVE A SHIT! THEY HAVEN'T FIXED ALL THE GRAPHICS CUS THEY DON'T CARE ABOUT US! GEORGE BUSH DOESN'T CARE ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE!!!!11 WHY CANT I COMPLETE THIS QUEST? WHY CANT I REACH LEVEL 9000?"

So we can invest more time into this timesink where you are not even allowed to keep your progress. Wonderful.

Seriously, there is much better things you can do with your time then beta test mmo's.

Oh nooo, spending time to improve a game I am gona play for hours in the future, oh the horror...

Or perhaps people are happy to spend their time making sure that when the game is released it isn't full of bugs and therefore far more enjoyable for people?

For as long as I can remember, the Warcraft universe has had its tongue so firmly planted in its cheek that Uther has a hole in his face. It's a silly universe inherently. Since when is the Warcraft universe epic or grand in scope?

You're on a website about video games, bro.

Inherently, video games are a waste of time. At least a beta test lets you participate in the development process of a game you (presumably) love, and get some unique access to new content.

I wondered why there was an Andy Chalk being rude in tweeter feed ...
Only took me 2 min to find a thread full of Andy content, in comments. Being obnoxious.

Bravo, Escapist, bravo. Going downhill fast. This kind of Andy content already convinced me to stop my sub.

But hey, maybe your staffers can come help you out. You still badly failed by not reading up on pandaren if you gonna write about Warcraft, no matter how smug you are on that high horse.

And with Traderoutes established with Pandaria, all the worlds Tailors and Leatherworkers and Blacksmiths will go out of business. I bet they even do resource-gathering cheaper.

I must say... I'm enjoying it... Not sure if the Kung-Fu Panda throwbacks are going to put me off though, it's still early days.

Just got my invite, oh good, only 17gb download to go :D

I've been slacking as guild leader, this REALLY isn't going to help having a beta account with early access to Pandaland.
