I know people have probably already seen this, and I am a 3 year WOW vet with 3 70s, done full endgame. I've played for a grand total of 4900 hours on all of my characters since December 2004.
I have been in deep addiction parts where I put off responsibilities. I've also played casually just doing some arenas during season three and such while I worked on my playstation 2 collection. I recently dropped the game all together (3 months ago) with the approaching moving in of my significant other.
Now, coming from someone who was deeply affected by this game and what it is capable of, I think that this report is an absolute LOAD OF NONSENSE. I never punched a hole in the wall because of it. I never was forced into homelessness or total sleep deprivation because of it.
I beleive part of the problem is poor parenting throughout this. Her son plays it 16 hours a day and she calls a Newspaper before she pulls the plug and forces him to snap out of it? That seems as though she is scared to bruise his feelings. It's not just the game itself, but MMO's offer a social outlet for like-minded people to interact without being worried about self consciousness. Which is not always bad. I had a lot of fun with the multitude of people I met on WoW.
I managed to fight my demons and drop it myself, but I am quite a bit older and have a hot girlfriend helping me, but when I was addicted to Earth and Beyond my father had to put a hammer though the monitor before I got it. I was pissed at him, at the world, at nothing in particular, but I got over it and am the better person for it.
What are you thoughts on this and video game addiction? I think it's parent's responsibilities to help these problems just like an alcohol or drug problem, but I don't think they know how. People forget that many of these MMO addicts almost fully avoid alcohol and drugs, because they are dealing with anxiety their own way. I think people have to stop pointing fingers and start working on a solution to the problem.
