I was wondering, what MMO should i consider playing, I should start work very soon so subscription fees wont be too much of a problem. I just want to point out that i have never played any MMO before but they do seem really fun. WoW looks really interesting but there has been sooo many expansions and add-ons i have already missed out on most of the games features. LOFTR Online looks interesting but i don't think is very popular and may have already reached its peak years ago. Although, playing as a Dwarf wielding an epic Butterfly-axe would be freaken awesome (Heeey, I can do that in WoW too :D). So what else is there?

Wait for this to be released -> www.riftgame.com (or get a beta key)

Also, Guild Wars is a great MMORPG! I totally recommend that + it has no monthly fee ;)

LOTRO is ftp, and WoW costs a subscription. that is something to think about. Beyond whether you want to play a ftp game or pay, who the hell but you is going to know how to cater to your personal preference? if you just want to hear people jabber on about how much they love or hate WoW, then prepare for the flood of posts.

my thought on WoW: it is cursed by its own success. I payed about $100 dollars on the game and expansions and only played for 3 months becaue the player base is asinine, and the uber guild i got into were a bunch of pricks. The game itself is well made, well thought out, well funded, and well run.

also: anyone who reccomends a niche game to everyone should be stuffed in a sack and beaten with a rake.

APB? ( rofl ) ...erm, Guild wars has always been a nice one, and plus it has no monthly fees at all. I think GW 2 is coming out soon anyhow, wait for that maybe? DC Universe is coming out soon and is appealing too. WoW is always going to be the giant of the MMO world, but you are correct in saying you've missed most of the content already, but who's to say Tribute runs are out of the question?

I would wait for the next gen of MMOs to start hitting. ToR, DCUO,guildwars2 etc. That way you get to jump in with others and not get left behind by eons, plus new graphics, new innovations, and all sorts of other goodies.

So yeah, wait a year and make an informed decision then... if the new ones bomb, the current ones being considered will still be there.

Lord of the Rings Online has a much MUCH larger community now then it has for years; this is due to it being released as F2P. I'd very much give it a shot if I were you, seeing as you have nothing to lose.

Outside of that, I'd definitely say to trial any MMOs before you buy them - for Guild Wars try and find a friend that has a copy it is very much past it's prime and GW2 is due out next year or so.

LOTRO goes Free To Play soon (or it has already). I don't know about other MMO's, but Lego Universe seems awesome and it costs 40£ on steam + subscription of 10£ or 15£ (don't remember). Otherwise, Guild Wars 2 and Star Wars: The Old Republic seem nice. If you have no rush to play a MMO, that is.

EDIT:

I think APB could be playable if it would change quite a bit, I found the beta to be complicated and repetitive, and every mission ended up being kill for a kill or win by a camper.

The only MMO I could tolerate for a long enough time (and still happily play to this day after many years) is EVE-Online.

It would strongly depend on just how much information you can tolerate, EVE can be extremely unforgiving (but precisely because of that, also extremely rewarding).
Most people end up hating it because it overwhelms them, unable to assimilate enough information fast enough before they make some nasty mistakes, and because unlike most other MMOs, it doesn't hold your hand and it doesn't guide you to any specific "endgame".
There is no such thing as "endgame" in EVE (well, there are several some would call endgame, but it's different for everybody else), it's all about the journey and you make your own destinations.

If you're looking for something easy, don't bother with EVE, it will chew you up and spit you out.
I can't recommend any other MMOs as far as personal experience is concerned, all of them kind of suck as far as I'm concerned.
But I hear WoW is still sort of theme-parkish nice, and many people say good things about LotR-O too.

Dnd online ,its free and awesome.
i capped 8 characters in DDO back when it was a subscription game (and the cap was 16). i am speaking from experience when i say that the game is buggy, poorly run, under funded, and the devs absolutely dont give a shit. the mods will lie to you, argue with you, and generally act like a bunch of teenage girls on the forums. seriously, the mods actually get on the forums and act like typical forum tools, rather than like professionals. once a bug becomes known, it wont be fixed for at least 10 mods, and when that happens, you can bet it will return with the next expansion.

here are some examples. There was a major server failure, and they had to spontaneously shut down the server and roll it back with no warning. ok, shit happens. lots of people got the raid loot they wanted only to have the server roll back to before they started the raid. what happened to me was much worse. i was 2 boxing, with my friends account so i could get all my gold on one toon. every one of my toons gave all of their money to "Miiko." when i logged to the toon of mine i wanted to give all that gold to, it wouldnt let me log on, so i logged Miiko off and took a break. when i logged back on, guess what happened to all my gold (5M gp)? yeah, i dont know either. all i know is that the devs just lied and said they couldnt do anything about it. another time, i was soloing a quest in which you have to kill a bunch of vampires. you can not advance to the boss fight untill you kill them all. when a vampire goes into his gaseous (i.e. invulnerable) form and never returns, oh well. its a bug, and bugs happen. what is not acceptible is the devs throwing away my ticket without responding, and letting me sit there for over an hour waiting. it was a simple matter that a dev could have fixed in one second. There are more, but i'v done enough typing for one post.

Battleground Europe (Or WWII Online)

It has a 2 week free trial you can try. I still have 1 week left and will play the living hell out of it.

It can be pretty hard when you start. Not EVE Online hard, but still....

You should try EVE Online, too

WoW is the most popular MMO out there for a reason you know. And with the soon to be released expansion pack it's changing the lower levels too, so joining around now means you're more or less as new to it as everyone else. No other game managed to hold my attention for even 1/10th that WoW did.

If you want something a bit more mature then EVE Online is a good one, although...

If you're looking for free-to-play I'd say Dungeons and Dragons Online

If you're going for a subscription based one I'd recommend City of Heroes/Villains. Immense levels of customisation, it's aged well, the community is nice and cosy making it really friendly, especially towards new players. Loads of content. The main benefit, I find, is that all the good content isn't reserved for the highest level players. Sure, there are epic storylines at level 50 (the max level), but high level players can bring along low level players through a Sidekick system which temporarily levels up the low level player to one level under the higher level player.

E.G: I'm level 50 and you're level 5. If I Sidekick you, you will become level 49, but you will only have all your level 5 abilities.

This system also works the other way around, letting low level players Exemplar high level players so the high level player becomes the same level as the low level player.

Additionally, most of the good content is found between levels 1-50, not just at 50.

Nearly every MMO has a free to play demo available, or in the case of something like Dungeons and Dragons Online, are free to play.

Go download them and play them all to see what you like the most.

If you have friends currently playing an MMO you could consider joining them as it's great fun to play with RL friends.

In regards to WoW, it's getting it's revamp, so although you missed out on a bit, if you play it soon enough after the newest expansion, you'll be experiencing some of the same feelings as older players. You also DONT need to buy the expansions until you're ready to play it. So you can get the basic version and get all the way to level 60 before you decide if you want to go on and buy expansions. Has dwarfs!

DDO is a very fun game to play starting off. It's quests are nicely laid out, but I found after a while the quests start getting less and less polished unless you've paid for them. Has dwarfs!

EVE looks like a horrible game to me. Seeing the real world investments people put into that game being destroyed by raids of other people looks like a horrible thing. It'd be like if I made the best car ever and twenty dudes came along and smashed it up on me. No dwarfs :(

This.
Although it's quite dead at the moment - wait for Guild Wars 2 maybe? I think they said Beta testing starts around early 2011...? But who knows. But yeah, Guild Wars is a spectacular game.

I'd just wait for SWTOR if I were you.

I would strongly dissuade you from trying WoW, given that Blizzard treats their fanbase like shit, bans you for completing new content too quickly, rats you out to the cops, and creates class balances by blindfolding themselves and smashing on the keyboard with the base of a dildo.

MMORPGs are kind of a flawed concept IMO, but shitty support and buggy gameplay mechanics don't help matters any.
