Modding Morrowind

I recently took the opportunity to buy Morrowind as part of Steam's New Vegas pre-release offer. I know this game has nothing if not a great reputation, and I can easily imagine having the time of my life with it. However...
It looks bad.
REALLY bad.
I wasn't expecting Crysis 2 or anything, but I'm quite new to gaming - the worst looking 3D game I've probably ever played is Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, so it's a bit of a culture shock. Does anyone know of a mod which will, if not make it perfect, at least make it modern enough that I can look at it without cringing slightly? Thanks.

There are a couple. Graphics Extender upgrades it all a bit, but doesn't make it look wholly different. Have a look around TESNexus; there are bound to be some there.

Gonna complain about Galaga and DOOM too? Its an older game. (Not Galaga and DOOM old, but still)
That worst looking 3D game was the best looking when graphics had not plateaud yet.
Back in my day we had to walk to gamestop uphill both ways in the snow barefoot!

This kind of stuff is a good reason why I am critical of "graphic whores".

Try Better Heads and Better Bodies. There are most likely some texture enhancements around as well.

I know. I'll still play the game without them (of course I will! Oblivion was one of my favourite games, ever), I care far more about gameplay. But I'm still a kid, and it is the worst-looking game I've ever played, so I'm interested in seeing if there is a way to make it look better.

Can anyone recomend me a mod for the combat?
I remember trying this before and completely failing to win any fights because my dagger was going through the enemy...

I don't really want to be pointed in the direction of all the mods, I'd like someone to recomend me a mod that they KNOW works.

Could try using a weapon you are actually skilled in. There is also an option to "Always use best attack" though it goes by lowest damage possible (so it will use the 3-5 instead of the 1-6)
The way it works in Morrowind, yes a flaw, but it actually is much easier to be a hand to hand character in Morrowind than Oblivion.

I don't care what anyone says but Morrowind has the best water texturing ever found in a game.

really? i'd say its a lot easier in Oblivion... though fighting against someone who is bare-handed when you first start can be a pain (in Morrowind). all i remember is when playing around with the game, when i set my strength to something stupid and any weapon stat to 100, it killed any enemy in a single hit. whilst hand-to-hand it took 3. one to take down stamina, and 2 to kill them.
I didn't know about that 3-5 instead of 1-6 thing though, thats quite funny i suppose.
"you want to ignore some of our battle animation? sure, at the cost of a bit of your strength!!"

i always found ranged weapons to be best on Morrowind, though not as realistic. Arrows would always fly in a straight line forever, regardless of how hard you fired them.

The worst graphical aspect of Morrowind is how the NPCs move (it's immersion hemorrhaging) and the water, otherwise it's fine looking game. The rough textures and dark gritty feel to the swamps adds to the overall ambiance in my opinion. I'd like if there was a little less exposition from some NPCs, occasionally making finding the information you care about in the novelesque ramblings difficult, but the animation and water textures are my biggest issues, otherwise I still consider it good looking game.

I'm 18 and have been gaming since the mid / early 90s.

Well, a well made hand to hand fighter should have high agility, and would be hard to hit without having to actually dodge, and when you finally tire them out, they have a difficult time getting to attack you again.

yeah, i don't think i thought it through, as my hand-to-hand got hit quite often, meaning he struggled to take on multiple assailants. hmmm, i now have the urge to re-download the game again and try make a high-agilitied hand to hand... i can even see the game box from here xD

Morroblivion [http://morroblivion.com/], dude. It's unbelievable.

TWO THINGS:

1) You will need Morrowind AND Oblivion

2) It is largely complete, but is still in beta

Just seeing it in action is unbelievable, though. Morrowind is a tremendous game, and it pains me to think someone might not give it the old college try just because they didn't like the aging cosmetics. Morroblivion is a dynamite mod, though, and seems to be just what you're looking for.

PS: Seen any elves? A-hahahaha!

Beer goggles mate :p

But yeah, as everyone is saying, turn up the graphics as far as you can and mod the shit out of it.
Other then that, theres nothing else you can do. I for one couldn't care less about the graphics. I still play The first 2 Elder Scrolls games, Arena and Daggerfall. :p

is there anyway to speed up a bit, because it's just dull to trudge though the whole thing
You could kill the last boss in 15-20 mins if you know what you're doing, but if you don't like exploring, talking to people, doing quests and random shit (witch is 90% of the game) just don't play it,you won't miss much.
