Modern MMOs "Barely Even Games," Says Former Guild Wars Dev

i wish game developers would stop attacking gamers, i know what they are trying to do is harass their opponents like in the start of a wrestling match, but instead they end up saying "you are all tasteless idiots who like crap! SHAAAAAME!" when hulk hogan is more sophisticated and subtle than you are its time to rethink your market strategy. Millions upon millions of people love the MMOs out there right now, which is exactly why you are making an MMO, stop saying that what your target audience like is crap and that they are stupid for liking it.

i must say i think the guild wars 2 team did it probably, they compare the game to their old one, they don't say anything bad about other MMOs, talking specifically about what they do and not what others don't, and having a bad ass trailer that shows the game, unlike blizzard and bioware who have freaking mindblowingly awesome trailers that shows no game footage

And for crying the hell out loud, ANOTHER zombie game? I think Black Ops covered the bases nicely by having zombie Nazis. Now can we be done with games prominently featuring either of those?
And what about those of us who want nothing to do with CoD? Or who like the idea of a survival horror zombie MMO?

Someone sit this guy down and show him Planetside...

Boom, MMOFPS that relies on skill over stats.

(Of course stats such as 1vs10 means no amount of skill will have you survive... but how many can you kill before they get you!)

Sounds like someone doesn't like RPG's too much. Although i can't give him a hard time, since he was a dev on Guild Wars. Which. Was. Awesome.

Yeah though honestly I am not suprise to see someone like him saying this, GW, honeslty is probably less stat based then most mmo's.

That sounds awfully similar to Tabula Rasa. MMOFPS isn't a new idea, and definitely isn't inherently superior to the typical MMORPG, so good luck to him. Following such recent games like APB and Tabula Rasa in a niche occupied by non-MMO titans like Left 4 Dead? He'll need all the luck he can get.

Anyone forgetting about dedicated servers to compensate for Lag?
No such thing for MMOs. The only servers you get are the servers the developers provide and chances are they are all in the same data center. In Zimbabwe. Or Germany.

While i like the idea of a zombie mmo. It does seems to be more like an openworld L4D so lets hope we get more info soon. Saying that i would have loved a zombie mod for APB hehe.
Anyway even shooters have stats. Whats the differance between a pistol and a shotgun. Stats.

Sure his idea's good, but "numbers and spreadsheets behind the scenes" is pretty much the definition of a D&D-based RPG, and bashing that is the equivalent of saying "I don't like RPGs, I like action games!"
Not really. The numbers in a pen and paper are just a framework to allow for some consistency. The real game is strategy and storytelling, something thats unfeasible to do in MMORPGGERS unless you open the floor to user content (ie: totally untenable unless you personally enjoy a Quest Log that reads "A) Go to Cocksville and defeat the Cockmaster. B) Penistopia is under attack! Drive back the monthly angry monster!")

but i like crunching numbers, i play with a calculator and pad of paper on hand!
though if they can make it work a persistant world with the atmosphere and action of L4D would be pretty awesome.

I actually don't care about CoD either, I just think that the fact that there's now a game where you kill Zombie Nazis is pretty much it. They've covered both over-used standard cannon fodder. I guess a zombie MMO would be something new... I'm just annoyed at how much zombies are in everything anymore.

Um... no shit?

As I said for Guild Wars a while ago, "one click and the game plays itself."

WHY THE HELL IS IT TAKING THIS LONG TO MAKE ACTION GAMEPLAY BASED MMOS? I mean, shit, didn't you people even notice how most single player RPGs like Oblivion use action oriented gameplay styles, and that it's usually better than the click interface? Or were you too busy ripping off Everquest?

I think there's room for other types of MMOs, but most right now are MMORPG and those numbers in the background are kind of a huge deal for RPGs. That is a huge reason behind playing it.

I think that it is something that is long overdue. MMOs have remained rather stagnate since the turn of the century. Its not too much to ask for MMOs to start showing traits popularized more than 5 years ago in console titles.

In fact we are starting to see the first glimmers in a new direction. Look at a game like Demons souls which is a psuedo MMO in its online mode. Look at the MMO that was wrapped around this weeks ZP in Vindictus. There was also a one word titled MMO that the name eludes me at the moment, that had things like impact sectors in mobs, so that where you hit on a mob could be considered relevant.

MMOs from what ive seen have always lagged behind standard console gaming conventions. But you do get the sense that change is coming to MMOs and im starting to think we are on the verge of an MMORPG division between more action oriented and more story driven.

I just wanted to point out that Jumpgate pulled off reflex based space combat in a persistant online world back in 2000... on my dial-up.
