Modern Music: Why I hate it

The reason most modern music is lacking is because the performers have little musical talent. Bands, ie back in the 70's 80's whatever actually had talent, they could play instruments well and as such understood how to write songs because they had a greater grasp over their medium. Too many artists today either rely on computers to modify/improve their voices, mix up old songs into a relatively catchy 4 to 4 beat, or don't write their own songs and therefore have no real input or passion into performing them. Music has also been hampered by radio stations cutting down time slots into 3-4 minute songs. It removes the ebb and flow that songs used to have, slow bits and fast bits, creschendos and troughs and instead turns it into a similar style of beat that is initially catchy and only enthralls people long enough to get them to the next song.
If anyone is interested, I hate modern music and listen to nothing but classical, those old composers REALLY understood their medium more than anyone could hope too today

Mmmmn... Evile is relatively new (CD wise, but they've been a band for years), however they aren't on the radio. :(

I haven't been interested of soulless studio music in about a decade and a half. Ever since I've made the discovery of independent or "underground" music, I've never looked back. Now the only thing redeeming about corporate music is to rip samples from it and make musical collages.

Finding new music and new bands I enjoy is often a difficult prospect. Generally, the opinions of others is a terrible benchmark for choosing new music. At one point, I was listening to the Dropkick Murphys - A punk band from Boston, when someone said "if you like DKM, you should listen to Coheed and Cambria". If I knew where that guy lived I'd mail him a box full of spiders.

Oddly enough, Amazon's suggestion system seems to work fairly well. It pointed me towards the Briggs and the Pogues, both of whom I thoroughly enjoy.

Do you see what I'm getting at? If you take away what defines something, you eliminate the integrity of the word; the word becomes meaningless
Yes, but your definition of the word is outdated and irrelevant.

So nyeh.

In my experience, Noise is represented by groups like: Negativland
I sure do love me some Negativland. I would personally consider them more "sound collage" then "noise". But that's just debating semantics. They are what they are.

But here's where there's a failing, I think, in this thread. I saw your debate with somebody about whether or not noise is music. But nobody has defined "noise", yet. Are you talking about just recording noise and pressing play? Because I would agree to that not being musical in nature. Or are we talking about Noise music? Because there is such a genre as noise music, which can be very beautifully composed. I'm not sure how one could debate that noise music doesn't fit every definition of music that one could make. Perhaps you both need to lay out your definitions of "noise" and definitions of "music" so you can make sure you're on a level playing field. Perhaps that's why the debate exists, and you might find that the two of you agree more then you think.

To start off, I generally define music as "organized sound", to keep it extremely basic. Yes, I'm stealing that somewhat from Edgard Varèse, but I can't say I disagree with that logic. You can make that definition more complex if you want to, but for the purposes of this discussion, I would imagine that should sum it up fairly well.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not disagreeing with you or your fellow Escapist that you're arguing with, mainly because nobody has really defined what you're talking about, yet. So it's hard for me to figure out who's really saying what.

But I will agree with you that music is defined and that definitions shouldn't be forgotten when approaching a piece and trying to discuss it. But there is most certainly a genre that's been agreed upon that is called noise music. Whether or not that's what you're discussing is what I'm unsure of.

And to clarinetJWD, who started his argument with "I have a music degree". Give it a rest. When talking to somebody about music that would automatically make me want to disagree with anything else you might have to say, just because of the smug level that's inherent in that comment. I've been listening to and enjoying music for a very long time now. I'm not going to listen to somebody tell me that I'm wrong just because they have a piece of paper with a plastic frame.

Such a generic post for a generic topic.

However, I agree wholeheartedly. I just can't find any soul in anything I hear anywhere, unless it's totally underground. In which case, as soon as I find out about it, it is no longer underground, it seems, and they start sounding terrible.

So I'm forced to listen to older music for it to be good.

Modern music? Is this in regard to American style music or what?

There is a lot of different types of music.

Some new bands are pretty good, for example I have been listening to Nine Inch Nails which is different in a good way. >.>

Amazing story-song(Again by bob dylan) - Hurricane.
NIN have been around for about 2 decades now, nothing new about that. Trent Reznor pioneered the Industrial music genre back in the late 80's.

In answer to the actual topic, I think you've been living an audio sheltered life if you think there is no good music being produced anymore.
Do a bit of research, find an 'old' band that you like and use the internet to search for modern bands with influences derived from your old band.
Once you find a band you like, search for similar bands; take note of the artists in these bands and see if they have solo careers or other bands they play in.
Honestly, it's not that hard and it's so rewarding to develop your own music path. Don't stick to genres, try everything and don't be ashamed if someone says your bands are sh1t, listen to what makes you happy :)

I found it hilarious that the most interesting and enjoyable album I've heard in the last 3 years was trying to emulate the style of The Beatles and others from their era, with modern mixed in.

Last year I overheard some 10-12 year old kids on a bus talking about how much better Metallica was when they had Cliff Burton. It was strange and beautiful.

Me, I've noticed that of about 300 songs that I really like and could listen to all day long, maybe 20 have been made in the last 20 years. I imagine that says more about my taste than the development of modern music, though.

(Current soundtrack: More than a feeling - Boston, 1976)
Haha...I would've high five'd 'em right then and there :p

Also, respect for being a Boston fan!

See, the shit you hear is just the good selling shit. Back when Pink Floyd and Zepplin and shit were in their pride, they weren't as mainstream popular as disco and shit. Same deal here.
