I know this'll sound a little childish, but the use of "mom" when it referers to a British mother annoys the hell out of me. On topic, the picture in the source is just pure gold.

Well now nice to see a legitimate complaint here. Just curious what the Game is rated for.

What an idiot of a mother. It would've been best too explain the word and why its bad and shouldnt be used. Then he wouldnt have to wonder about it leading to him saying it without understanding its meaning.

The hell is wrong with people today? Stop being so overprotective!

...Wow. You'd think that someone would have caught this while they were making the game...

"My husband Daniel had to usher him out of the room."
Considering there's a photo of him standing next to the offending word it would appear your husband didn't do a very good job of ushering him out

Why are some people insulting the mother? At least she's trying to make her child smart also he looks adorable in that picture, I know this sounds stupid but I almost hope she sues them (even though I think she's making a fuss over nothing) just so she can give her son a good education.
Because her hysteric reaction is a sign of bad parenting.

At first i didn't recognize the show but that's to that picture i remember a clip of that awhile back where they had two priests competing in the anagram round and the word they had was "CUNTFLAPS"

Oh noez? A word? It taught her son a word? A word that's only "worse" an other words because people stupidly decided it was for no good reason? Quick, sue the makers of that game for a bajillion dollars for ruining that poor kid's life!!

No but really, that's just stupid. This wouldn't even be a problem if people weren't so stubborn in deciding a certain small group of words are "swear" words and we shouldn't say them because they are "bad" with absolutely no kind of logic or reason behind doing so. Fuck that, I say teach all the 3 year olds to say shithead and a whole lot of other words too.

I'm 24 and I'm still waiting for someone to explain why certain words are "so bad."

"Usher him out of the room"? xD

Its wrong, but I don't think he needs to be escorted to a different room.

I'm just saying this:

CLASSIC. I was just about to post this.

Man I love Countdown. I used to watch it when I was really young and then when I did community service and I had to visit grannies I watched it with them too. Still tune in occasionally.

Haha, wow. This game is a #1 troll.

But still; usher the kid out of the room? How about explaining that it's a bad word that hurts other people?

To be fair on the mother however, I'm sure she checked the rating, it said all was clear and bought it expecting to have a certain level of swearing removed. They allow some words like 'wanker' on the TV show, but anything stronger I believe would be disallowed. (yes the C word was a fake, sheesh.)

I'd also suggest that if he's the kind of kid who'd choose to play 'countdown' for fun, he's the kinda kid who'll be mature enough to handle a word like 'shit' without it destroying his mental state.

However, it shouldn't have been in there. How long would it seriously have taken to run a short list of 'bad' words thru it's internal dictionary? If nothing else, it could spark a demand for a national recall of the game and a demand for a censored version, which could cost them thousands, because they skipped over some basic bug checking, and play testing.

Countdown however is excellent, despite being a very slow, sedate show for old women, somehow it still draws me in and I can't see a line of letters on screen without trying to get a 7 letter word or better.

I'm quite the demon on the numbers round too :)

I still remember a Charlie Brooker episode where he showed an American 'focus group' some of our shows, like this, Bullseye, the Bill, and they just panned them all, because of the lack of excitement or big prizes. I for one can't see how Countdown could be hugely improved by having a £10,000 prize, some of it's charm is that you win a damn dictionary, for proving that you don't need one.

On a side note, I watched Brooker's 'How TV ruined your life' about how game shows have changed, and I think Countdown is one of the last remnants of when game shows used to be enjoyable.

I remember growing up with the Generation Game, Strike it Lucky, Blankety Blank, Bullseye, etc, and rarely did anyone walk away with more than a few hundred pounds, usually they'd be lucky to get a toaster and an alarm clock, but everyone was happy, enjoying themselves and the quiz show was just a fun, light hearted format.

Since, I'd say, 'Who wants to be a Millionaire', everything became about the money and the tension, and to an extent, watching people lose. So many game shows now, you build up a big cash prize thru the show, then miss a question at the end and lose everything. Sure it suits 'tension and drama', but it's not actually fun.

I never thought I'd speak up for Michael Barrymore, but damn, he did know how to make a game show lively and enjoyable, you wouldn't catch him pulling a stern face and giving a tense 20 second pause just to say' correct '.

On another angle, there's even fewer shows I'd say that challenge the viewer much. Countdown keeps you involved I'd say, 'Pointless' is like a much harder 'Family Fortunes/Feud' and over on BBC 4, 'Only Connect' makes Mastermind look like a kid's game show.

Would anyone else maybe watch a lively, fun, quiz show where the point was fun, and the prizes were amusingly shit?

I can understand the mom's feelings over this. After all, I wouldn't want my child picking up a swear while learning either. Still, its a funny situation.
Yeah, the little fuckers should learn 'em from school and angry parents like everyone else.
Damn fucking straight man! That's how I learned it. 3 years old is just a tad young to be calling people shitheads in my opinion. At least wait until he's 6 or something.
All of this ^.

Got to love every fucking person in this thread has no fucking clue what its like raising a child (and yes I'm using that word ironically).

Seriously, the immaturity on these forums never ceases to amaze.

P.S. If its not an issue for me its not an issue. Sounds like a ****-garglingly narrow view of reality.
