On a side note, I watched Brooker's 'How TV ruined your life' about how game shows have changed, and I think Countdown is one of the last remnants of when game shows used to be enjoyable.

I remember growing up with the Generation Game, Strike it Lucky, Blankety Blank, Bullseye, etc, and rarely did anyone walk away with more than a few hundred pounds, usually they'd be lucky to get a toaster and an alarm clock, but everyone was happy, enjoying themselves and the quiz show was just a fun, light hearted format.

Since, I'd say, 'Who wants to be a Millionaire', everything became about the money and the tension, and to an extent, watching people lose. So many game shows now, you build up a big cash prize thru the show, then miss a question at the end and lose everything. Sure it suits 'tension and drama', but it's not actually fun.

I never thought I'd speak up for Michael Barrymore, but damn, he did know how to make a game show lively and enjoyable, you wouldn't catch him pulling a stern face and giving a tense 20 second pause just to say' correct '.

On another angle, there's even fewer shows I'd say that challenge the viewer much. Countdown keeps you involved I'd say, 'Pointless' is like a much harder 'Family Fortunes/Feud' and over on BBC 4, 'Only Connect' makes Mastermind look like a kid's game show.

Would anyone else maybe watch a lively, fun, quiz show where the point was fun, and the prizes were amusingly shit?

I can understand the mom's feelings over this. After all, I wouldn't want my child picking up a swear while learning either. Still, its a funny situation.
Yeah, the little fuckers should learn 'em from school and angry parents like everyone else.
Damn fucking straight man! That's how I learned it. 3 years old is just a tad young to be calling people shitheads in my opinion. At least wait until he's 6 or something.
All of this ^.

Whats up with all these people raging like that.. it sounds like people can't stand reality for what it is anymore - it never gets more entertaining!

Got to love every fucking person in this thread has no fucking clue what its like raising a child (and yes I'm using that word ironically).

Seriously, the immaturity on these forums never ceases to amaze.

P.S. If its not an issue for me its not an issue. Sounds like a ****-garglingly narrow view of reality.

I'm willing to always defend videogames and 9 times out of 10 they are wrongly accused of being evil. But i do feel that this wasn't a responsible thing to put in a videogame. The game is aimed at the family and if you include mature words then you're just asking for trouble.

On the other hand, when you write to the sun and say "My husband Daniel had to rush him out of the room." THEN rush him back into the room so they could take a picture of him with the swearword it really does come across as a desperate cry for attention.

I don't think the 3 year old would know how to say shithead or know what it means.

So she photographed her son beside the TV, then he asked what it meant...and then he was ushered out of the room? Oh, well good, as long as we've got the timeline sorted.

They do one for the viewers to do, between the ad breaks. One time I was watching it, tis came up:

LARGEBAPS

Of course I had a fair chuckle at that, because I'm a child at heart. Four-five minutes later, the answer appears:

GRASPABLE

In the immortal words of Glenn Quagmire, "that one was also sexual."

First thing that comes to mind is,
On a side note, why the heck is a three year old playing countdown?!
Shouldn't the little prick be outside playing?

"Oh dear Christ, my son might see a swear word, chase him out of the room with a fire hose or something!!!!!!"

A pretty innocuous one at that. These sorts of parents piss me off, kicking up a fuss over nothing, I'd just laugh it off and play the next game.

...They "ushered him out the room"?

It's not a bomb, it's a word. Take away the controversy behind it and suddenly its just a boring word in general.

This is proberbly one of the VERY rare times a mom has an actual acceptable problem with a game.Still amusing though.

Stop putting things on this site that are from the Sun, it's probably a lie.

The Sun, The Daily Mail and other tabloids are not to be believed.

if you remove their power by using them in every day language they lose their strength and become a standard word,
Which is precisely what we don't want to happen. The value of swear words is their ability to shock and offend. If we remove that by using them constantly then they become nothing but pointless and redundant words, either meaningless adjectives or exact synonyms of other words that we already have.

Yes, we could remove swear words' offensiveness, but doing so would remove their entire point for existing and our ability to be verbally offensive or shocking in a succinct way. I personally don't see that as a good thing.
