Basically Jim's right on. Target didn't do anything but pacify the family friendly atmosphere, but only after they've got the majority of cash they'd have made from it. Its basically disingenuous and anyone with half a brain would see it for what it is. Of course anyone with half a brain wouldn't be outraged over a game like GTA being sold anywhere. GTA is what it is, we've gone through this since GTA III was released way back when and the stupidity dust stirred up should have settled by now.
I could go on about how parents who're pissy about GTA being sold are pissed at the wrong people, but it all boils down to anything like that being their own fault for not being parents in the home and how its no one else's responsibility to decide what their kids watch or play. Thats really all my point would boil down to so there's a tl;dr.
Anyway, censorship is another one of those words people misuse on a consistent basis [insert Inigo Montoya jpg here]. In my gut feeling I think people just want something to attach political bias to, to revolt against and will change a definition (which takes a short bit of time to google the use of said word) to their own device, either out of self-important attention seeking or just because they're really that stupid. Of course I don't know for a fact, I never do I just go with what I can extrapolate and my own intuition.
It does bother me a bit though that if these companies really cared about how their customers felt about the products they carry, in the vein of family friendly, then they wouldn't need to wait until after money has already been made off of said product. Just don't carry it from the outset. While you're at it, don't carry violent movies or questionable language music. Go the whole 10 yards, otherwise its just face saving disingenuous bullshit.

I'm curious, though. When should they have stopped stocking the game? The petition is a recent one, inspired largely by the videos from the current gen release that came out less than a month ago. Should they have pacified people before they requested it?

I'm just saying its not as if GTA controversy is a new thing that Target would have been unaware of, they could have decided since they're a "family friendly" type store to have not carried the game at all to begin with, rather than pulling it post-huge sales figures and money already pocketed. It seems like an afterthought of pacification, a token shelf-pull rather than a "oh we agree with you" thing.

Reading the last few posts, I never thought of it that way. That is simply a token act. It just shows that they only care as long as it affects their money-making. It is soo much easier to appease the parents. Their game sales are mainly done for that game. HMmmm

Its a blatant pr move on targets and Kmarts behalf. They make most of their money off the first month and first christmas of a games release. The game is a year old. They havent lost much in income and pleased a bunch of conservative types who they are probably hoping will be more inclined to buy their stuff now that they have been placated with a token gesture.
