Why is my former country so insecure.
If this is a serious question, my understanding that it's a combination of China's "Century of Humiliation," plus the drawbacks of a single party state - you have to appear strong both within and without, which translates to everything from stuff like this to wolf warrior diplomacy. Plus, being a rising power, China's probably aware of the Thucilidies Trap (if not necessarily in name).
Then again, if you used to live in China, you're probably in a better position to give a take on it than me.

Yep. Authoritarianism is bad
At least in China, we know it's authoratarianism. Left/right cancel culture has the gall to present itself as having the moral high ground.
