A friend of mine recently gave me the following moral dillemas, and asked me how I would deal with them. And I wanted to see what you guys thought. Here goes:

You are living in 1943 Europe, and are taken to a concentration camp. You have two children, one daughter who is as sweet as the sun is bright, and a son who looks up to you, and watches your every step. You are not a Jew, but your spouse was. When the Nazis discover this, they congratulate your non-Jewishness by letting you pick which of your kids is to be delivered to the gas chambers, and which to the work camps. How do you respond?

You are a citizen of France, in the time of the revolution. Your one and only child, who you hold dear, is condemned to a hanging for crimes "against the state". The excecutioner, who has had a vendetta against your family for years, commands you at the trial, to kick the chair out from under your own child, or he will come after your spouse next. What do you do?

You are a captain of a prestigous boat, sailing deep in the Atlantic. Suddenly, something goes terribly wrong, and the boat begins to lurch and make disturbing noises. One of your chief crewmen, an expert at crisis situations, believes that the ship will sink unless it loses weight. Unfortunately, this is purely a transportation vessel, and holds little except people. You, the captain, are faced with a decision. Sacrifice some of the people on the ship? Or not? And if so, who?

Roll these over in your mind, fellow Escapists.

Scenario 1: But I am a Jew... Regardless, pick the girly. I've always wanted a girl and so she'd probably be my favorite. Also, I want a girl with the name 'Aby' to live! And hell, someone's gotta survive, might as well go with someone. Better than refusing and fucking them all over.

Scenario 2: Flee to Canada!

Scenario 3: Obviously just loose some of the cargo and say "We hit a storm" or whatever. Drowning is a horrid way to die... read it wrong...

Yea, lets just start sawing off parts of the boat. We don't need sails or life boats or tables and such.

1-

My son, that way he will hopefully carry on my family name. And because he would probably be my "favorite".

2-

I would be ask why they're not using the preferred method of execution during the era, the guillotine.

3-

Sacrifice my crew members. That way I look prestigious and they look loyal. Of course, assuming that I know how to do (and therefore teach) their jobs to passengers.

1)I would have already gotten out of Germany when the getting was good. More then likely i would have murdered the nazi and fled. Simple as that.

2)Depends. By "crimes against the state" does that entail murder and rape? If it was petty crimes i would simple try and free and and flee. If not i would simply refuse to kick the chair. If they try and come after me i will simply have them arrested. I don't know much but i know they can't force you to execute people.

3)Toss cargo. You said its a transport ship. Some passengers are about to lose there luggage.

1 - in the interest of some sort of legacy, the son would be sent to a labor camp (presumably dead afterwards), and the daughter sent to the gas chambers (dying quickly and mercifully)

2 - likely a hysterical reaction would cause me to refuse any reason, cause a ruckus, and cause my death, as well as the son's and the spouse's.

3 - The vessel will take on water and capsize during the next swell or storm. We don't know this, of course, so passengers will be shot and dumped over until the boat seems to stop sagging.

1. either convince the guard to let me kill both my kids in exchange for letting me run the camp (so more people can get free) or bribe him . 2. me and my kid would have been in canada 3. lose cargo, goodbye passengers luggage.

First one really depends, on principle I would rather let both die then accept such a ridiculous proposal, and since I'm a male they would be Jewish anyway meaning they will be killed later, surely... If it came to the choice however, I would take the son, the reason being the time.

Second, I'd kick it... Then join the revolution/kill the guy when given the oppertunity.

Third, I would dispatch whoever wouldn't be noticed.

1 is historically inaccurate - once you got into a concentration camp, your precise ethnicity mattered jack squat, and by 1943, gas chambers were almost a default choice (EDIT: once you were incapable of physical work). Plus, I am a Slav, and therefore not a chance that my family would NOT be exterminated if we got into a death camp.

3 is illogical. Luggage, non-essential electronics, if you massed everything on the ship that isn't people, food, water or required for the ship's operation, it would outweigh the crew + passengers. By far.

2 - I'd be surprised it went that far, since I would devote a lot of effort to prevent that in the first place. But I would probably go into a frothy rage and try ripping the executioner's throat out before they can react. And then hope I can stave them off long enough for either the execution to be postponed - always a glimmer of hope - or my kid to get away.

1- I attempt to flee Germany with both my children. If they kill me while I try to escape, it would be better than the alternative of knowing I doomed both my children to death. And our deaths would be on my own terms, not theirs.

2- Physically attack the executioner. I can't trust him to keep his end of the bargain. I'm sure I am next on the chopping block in any case.

3-Use a lottery to determine who gets to go and who gets to stay. No life is more valuable than any other life.

1. Spit in the Nazi's face, and join both kids in the camp.
2. Huh... I don't think I could do that.
3. Drop luggage, and if that fails, drop tables, chairs, any unnecessary weight. Anything to keep all of the passengers alive.

1- I'm pretty sure marrying a jew was reason enough to shoot you or at least make sure you are condemned to a camp death anyway. If I honestly knew my kids whichever I could believe would survive the camp and hopefully the one who couldn't survive not suffer.

2- If I have no other way I kick the chair and promptly beat that bastard to death with it. If there was mercy in the magistrate you were allowed to haul on their legs so they go quicker. "You're pulling my leg!" has a dark origin. Also the guillotine was notoriously inefficient and not really used much.

3- Old, sick, crazy... protestant english... actually them first.

Actually, I would probably do that too. Odd.
Great minds think alike.

1) the boy goes to work camps. if he lives, he has a higher chance of reproducing than the girl. for she might die in childbirth.
2)kick the chair at the executioner, in an "accidental" petty act of revenge, possibly knocking him off the gallows, maybe breaking his neck.
3)throw the crisis guy and his team overboard, for i hate bad news.

1. Whichever would have the highest chance of survival.
2. I wouldn't have a choice. I'd have to kill them.

1. Attempt to bargain by requesting that both of my children are to work the camps under the condition that I will work alongside them.

2. I would kick the chair (only if there were no possible diplomatic way to stop the hanging). Sometimes you just have to man up.

3. Throw some supplies (preferably non-essential) overboard in place of my crew. OR I could attempt to use any life saving vessels (i.e. Inflatable rafts) and send some crew members off with that and plenty o' rations.

1. Find out where the guard is, kill him in his sleep then alter the report so I can keep both kids.

2. At said execution, shoot the guard in the head and save child. No executioner left to threaten spouse.

3. Toss everything, railings, floorboards, supplies, etc. first. If that doesn't work, willing men then old people go. By then the ship either would've stopped sinking or the rebellion would've killed me and the commander.
