If you don't know already, the upcoming Call of Duty, Black Ops, will host a lot of cutomization. a lot of it is really good and it will allow for more distinct look while playing.

This made me think then, why don't more shooters offer customization? Upcoming Medal of Honor is fun but it feels limited. Most likely this will be also for a lot of other shooters that will come out.

When I say customization I mean, clothes, gun skins, insignias...

So what do you guys think? Should we have more customization in shooters?

Its needed, other wise it just doesn't feel right

This is where Halo Succeeds. It can be almost any shooter. Hell, it can even not be a shooter at all (If you make the right map and game type)
If I had the right friends, it could be a good horror game (give the victims plasma pistols and make the "infected" a ton of health and make it dark and such)

I think shooters should focus more on upgrading the weapons. I.E. making them either semi-automatic or automatic, different sights and scopes, silencers, round size, magazine size, and so on and so forth. And I don't mean just one upgrade.

But customizable looks and armor should also have an affect on gameplay. Speed, health, and the like.

Agreeing with him to avoid redundancy.

Uh...what kind of customization are we talking about? Expand a bit?
Gun skins, insignia, character clothes, and all of that.

Skins and such don't really seem necessary, (especially character clothes...you don't even see them!)

But more customization is always good, no matter what. Seriously, a game like Saints Row 2, I spent almost as much time changing my character as playing the actual game.

Go and play TF2! It was (one of) the first game(s) to offer character customisation between matches.

Did it come out before or after Halo 3?

TF2 is also one of the limited ones, you pick your hat but thats it... (changing guns is not, customization.)

It's pretty pointless for first person shooters, as you can't see yourself. Other games, yes, it would be better to have more.

Well, I have always felt there should be more room in customizing the half-inch of my character I can actually see at any given time.

Or to put it in a less sarcastic way, I do find customization in First-Person games kinda pointless, aestetically atleast. But I can see the appeal. I would probably not use it myself, but then I rarely play these games online anway so...

In Halo: Reach, my armor looks as tactical and realistic as I could get it to. My steel hue makes me difficult to spot in urban terrain, or simply in darkness, with a deep blue highlight to provide identification. My profile is low, save for a hardened uplink module on the side of my helmet.

My friend looks like an armored Heavy Weapons Guy.

Customization? Yes, I think Reach has that covered. And I'm pretty much content with that level of customization (the kind that doesn't affect gameplay).

APB spoiled me utterly as far as character customization goes. However, I do agree that it's fairly pointless for first-person shooters (let's face it, we're far less interested in how other players dolled up their characters than in how WE look), and weapon customization would go much better on that front.

[small]We'll leave out the fact that I've spent hours downloading and checking out body, gear and clothing Mods for Oblivion....[/small]

Customization is not essential but it can be very nice. I mean if it was creating your own look like how you could create your own wrestlers back on the N64 wrestling games, that would be pretty awesome to do on a current gen shooter. I agree with weapons needing more upgrading/customization aswell. Instead of the usual arrangement of Pistol, Shotgun, Rifle, Grenades, Rocket Launcher etc. some more creativeness would be awesome. It would depend on the game but like really bizarre combinations would make things really different and varied.

Indeed. Especially with the new forge system. Now that we aren't so constrained by the physics engine, anything is possible. Personally I want to make an invasion map that focuses on rapid troop movement, while my friends are working on some crazy race tracks.

We just need to have a thousand and one customization options for gloves.

OT: Eh, I'd take customization in firepower, armor, gadgets, all that over cosmetic things. Yeah, it's cool to dress up your guy however you want, but when push comes to shove I want to have a lot of guns to pick from. A good example of this is BC2, just a wall of choices.

Yeah, I enjoy customisation.
Having a generic gun with a generic soldier is okay, but having a custom-tooled gun whilst running around a battlefield with a Hawaiian shirt on will always top the base-line experience.

Well, to be fair, being able to atleast change the gloves could be kinda sweet.

And yeah, weapon/gear-customization would be the kind I like personally. Except of course the "download these gamebreaking weapons for money!"-kind. That would be the shit-kind. But being able to just choose types of silencers, scopes, ammo... Things like that.
That I like.
