What's with this? I thought Aussies were laid-back happy-go-lucky types, not law-enforcing killjoys. Have I been misinformed?
Yeah, I know man

I game with a ton of Auss, and they are all so chill and funny(<3 Auss). And there Government seems like the biggest D-bag in the world.
Maybe it's some kind of cosmic balancing act. You have to have so much uptightness in one country, so the government guys in Oz go crazy. But I hear that many games are banned or at least censored in Japan and Germany as well.

Australia? On behalf of your neighbour, the country known as New Zealand, I present to you our thoughts on the matter.

We offer our deepest condolences towards you and your silly government, and hope it get's well soon.
My puku is not happy with this. Fuck government censorship. This is just further evidence of why we should have a constitutional bill of rights enshrining free speech. My biggest concern is that this is silently going to filter a lot of radical sites giving information on things the government doesn't want known.
Hm, I wonder if they do that the US will swoop in and say BAD AUSTRALIA! One of the good aspects of the US is that we usually intend to do good (not saying we always accomplish good things), and one of the things we would probably step in on is if one of our allies government decided to oppress their own people.
The U.S. government doesn't have the moral standing right now to say a damn thing about this (unfortunately) 8 years ago we could have gone to them and said "you make this mandatory and we stop trading with/sanction you." Now we just have to watch.
Let them do what they want, it sucks that all over the world everyone is slowly losing there freedoms.
If we do that somewhere along the line, the U.S. will make some treaty with them that forces them to censor what goes on the internet here (under the Constitution treaties are to be given more importance that the Constitution itself.)

Last I checked, didn't Japan have a ton of porn games for their consoles and portables?

Your are a idiot.

So your saying that another nations treaty can over ride our constitution, but we can't make laws as citizens of this nation that go against the constitution.... There is something called the supreme court, and if a law or treaty is unconstitutional, they don't allow that law or treaty to exist.

Taking your logic that would mean if we signed a treaty with a nation that the treaty could say "All American have no Freedom of speech", which is protected under the first amendment. See there is this thing in the constitution, (which you don't know anything about it seems) called the supremacy clause. This states that no law, or treaty shall over ride the authority of the United States Constitution. We our the citizens have to amendment our constitution if we want something to change, so why would we let another nation dictate our laws?

What you are talking about is the invasion of our Sovereignty, I don't think we would let another nation dictate our laws....

You are clearly a idiot and the reason people around the world think Americans are dumb.

Oh and I can look at porn from japan.... whatever that has to do with anything...

And you obviously have never read a stitch of the constitution.

The way it is written "Treaties with foreign nations shall be treated as the supreme law of the land" it could very easily be interpreted that way.

QTF. Because no real Australian in his right mind would run for parliament.

This is as my fellow Aussies put it "a dick move", the internet is somewhat volatile and dangerous I'll admit, but it's not things like browsing porn accidentally, or finding sites that advocate racism, sexism etc. It's things like cyber bullying or identity theft and phishing sites. Things like that cannot be technologically handled. And now I regret voting for the labor government. I thought Atkins was an asshole, but Conroy takes the medal for "**** of the parliament".

Next week, Australian Government makes having sex illegal.
Quite the opposite. See the Mary Whitehouse sketch in the Goodies, wherein she managed to have any and all forms of naughtiness censored on television, so everyone was left with nothing to do but, well, have sex all the time.

That will be the result if you outlaw porn. People will just have more sex.

Here's the thing, though. Its not all cut and dried for the Labor party. This still has to pass through the senate and for that to happen, they either need support from the Coalition or all of the other senators (Five from a smaller party (The Greens) and two independents). At least one of those seven senators has shown that he is against the filter.

It's worked pretty well here in Finland. We've managed to ban such nasty sites as the one for the W3 Consortium. Good riddance.

We still have the problem that running your own DNS server to get rid of the filtering is, well, legal. I'm sure that'll be solved soon enough, though.

Bah, man. I'm sick of our government assuming that we're all little kiddies that need to be protected from the scary interwebs, or that they'll run across a terribly violent game that will turn them into psychopaths.
I think that the government in general tends to forget that it is the parents responsibility and prerogative to decide what is and is not appropriate for their children, and supervise their children, especially when they're on the internet. If parents are concerned what their children can access when they're not around, install a filter! If a parent buys their 15 year old a mythological R18+ game, then its that parent's choice to expose their kid to that content.

But as to the viability of this proposed filter, I doubt the government will get it through because if it carries on, I personally will protest (undoubtedly with thousands of others) and i'm sure some genius will find a way around it. Worst comes to worst, Rudd will get it up and running in the last year of his election, then it will become an election issue. Liberals will use it against labour just like Work choices and it will all go away (fingers crossed).

If this plan fails, then I will have to install myself as Overlord of Australia. Then all will be fine, with uncensored internet and R18+ rated games!
