Yahtzee, I just think I need to mention this to you:

The reason most developers go to the Mutltiplayer side of the games, is because it's much easier to create, as opposed to a single player game, that's why games like Halo, have no indulgence to create a solid varied SP game, since MP is much more standardized and easier to manage in a small team (ironic choice of words, since the Bungie is pretty big as far as teams go).
i totally agree you can make an intelligent game like fallout 3 that will take one of the most dedicated game studios years to make or you can make a 30 minute long *cough*modern warfare 2*cough* campaign and then spend your time on 10 multiplayer maps and then you can go to outsell every form of entertainment of all time. which sounds more appealing?

...like to see something done outside the Spartan story arcs, and maybe it'll be fresher since it won't be Bungie's child anymore. Maybe something along the lines of playing a Marine from his first deployment out of boot and taking us through a career we can choose depending on what our preferred play style is.
Your asking for practically more of the same when almost nothing has ever even been mentioned of the Forerunner-Flood War and very little is known about the early days of the Covenant?

Yahtzee is just so tired and predictable. I'm sick of hearing him blather on about how multiplayer doesn't matter. It sure as hell seems to matter to a lot of other people.

I've grown so tone deaf to Yahtzee's profanity-laced ramblings that they start to sound something like...

It's obvious you've grown deaf to his words, because you've completely missed the point of them. My guess is that you heard him say "I don't like multiplayer" and right then-and-there stopped paying actual attention. His point isn't that a game can't be about multiplayer, quite the contrary, he gave a fairly favorable review to Team Fortress 2 in his Orange Box video and that game is 100% multiplayer.

The point, however, is this: If Halo is JUST about the multiplayer, then why does it have a single-player campaign? It's like when you're playing an RPG and you find that weapon that's weaker than the one you started with, and you sit there wondering why they even bothered putting that sword into the game. That's what Yahtzee gets when he plays Halo. He isn't interested in the multiplayer, so whatever he ignores it, but now there's this single-player campaign that gets all this attention and hype. Thing is though, the single-player campaign (in his opinion) just isn't that great. So the game is 50% don't give a shit, and 50% just plain shit.

Why are so many people complaining about Yahtzee not liking to play online multiplayer?
Because it would be like if I came along and said I didn't like a JRPG because the roleplaying elements are shit. Yes, the game might have other good stuff, but the core of an RPG is that you get to pick dialogue options and affect the game's plot, and if that stuff is absent and I'm looking for an RPG then clearly the game is shit.
Sounds like a fairly valid reason to dislike jRPGs, actually. If you aren't into the gameplay style of a jRPG, then why should you be obligated to like them just because you're into other RPGs?

Over-all, it's kinda funny reading some of these replies. Never really read replies for any of the other ZP/XP stuff that Yahtzee has done, and it's kinda funny that people in here are so determined to prove another Escapist contributor [http://www.escapistmagazine.com/articles/view/columns/experienced-points/8120-Experienced-Points-A-Fanboys-Guide-to-Fanboying] right. Seems that even the Halo fanboys can't quite agree on this matter. One school of thought wants to correct Yahtzee in saying that the story IS good and he just doesn't know enough about it, while the rest of the fanboys are saying that he has no right having an opinion on the game because he's only paying attention to the story.

So which is it fanboys? Should he be paying attention to the story, or shouldn't he? I mean cripes, if you guys are gonna blast his opinion for being "wrong", at least be consistent in what he's doing wrong.

While I really like Halo Reach, you do make some good points Yahtzee. It probably would've been nice if they made Noble six a bit more like the protagonists from Half Life/Bioshock. By making it so the characters won't talk or ever reveal their faces, it's easier to place the player into their shoes and allow them to project their personalities on screen, making the experience of the game more personal.

Also, how dare you!? This shirt was given to me by my Grandmother!

One point I don't think many people have picked up on is the fact that Yahtzee isn't calling the multiplayer, in any way, shape, or form, bad. If you enjoy playing Halo on multiplayer, I think that by now it's probably safe to assume that, if you liked Halo multiplayer in the past, you're going to like it here. That isn't the point. Any additions or tweaks to the Halo multiplayer in this game is, in the larger scheme of things, completely irrelevant.

Think about it for a second; let's just say they decided not to put the single player campaign in at all. Halo Reach was exclusively multiplayer. Would you still buy it, even though it's just multiplayer? Sadly (in my mind, at least), there's still a lot of people that would. But the point is that it's not Halo anymore; it's just another multiplayer game with space marines and aliens. Granted, it's a very good example of multiplayer in a game, and so it should be, seeing as it's been tweaked and refined for this long, but it's still more or less the same experience you've had with all the previous multiplayer offerings in the previous Halo games.

In this sense, the only part of any real relevance to the series is the single-player campaign. The campaign needs to be good; this is the part that needs to be judged. If the series cannot stand on it's single-player alone by this point, after four sequels, then it doesn't deserve to be called "good".

I am surprised there is no specific mention of the guy who is impaled, lifted of the ground, then turns around to punch his attacker. Goddamn I hated that scene.

I don't think multiplayer doesn't matter, though I personally don't like it. I do think that your main campaign shouldn't be lass than say, 12 hours though, whether or not you have multiplayer. I'm not positive but that's what it seemed Yahtzee was saying, that multiplayer is fine for those who like to play it, but the single player shouldn't suffer because a) not everyone enjoys or has access to multiplayer and b) servers likely won't last forever.

Wow, what a worthless 'article', to follow up a rather mundane review.

So let's see, Yahtzee refuses to play the multiplayer, the aspect gamers likely spend at least 60% of the their game time playing. Hell a bunch of the online-players haven't even touched the Halo 3 campaign. Some folks just aren't interested, and Bungie seem to pay a lot more attention to the multiplayer.

So instead he pays attention to the story, only he hasn't bothered to play much, if any, of the previous games, neither has he glanced at the canon.

I doubt Mass Effect 2's story is abundantly clear to people who haven't played the first, Y'know why?

- The game has sold many, many copies.
- The history/canon is available online, for free.
- Boring the fans (the people games like this are generally aimed at), with details they already know about, isn't good storytelling.

Granted, Halo: Reach doesn't sound like a great game, I haven't touched it in fact, yet it is clear that Yahtzee is making bad judgements on a game he wrong foots from the start.

Complaining about a game being mediocre, and then making a mediocre review and follow up statement which ignores the most important facets of the game, is poor conduct for a reviewer.
The fact is that Yahtzee shouldn't need to know about the established Halo universe, Reach is a PREQUEL. Nothing has happened, its BEFORE the ORIGINAL Halo trilogy. Giving Yahtzee crap for not knowing the subtext for a PREQUEL is pretty bad logic (Story writing tip, a prequel should establish subtext, not rely on subtext otherwise it defeats the point of a prequel). A proper PREQUEL shouldn't ASSUME anything. An 8 year old should be able to pick up Reach without playing any other Halo game and understand the story without any subtext.

Also MassEffect 2 is a SEQUEL, it happens AFTER the events of the first one, so its perfectly good story writing to assume that the reader should already know things. I don't expect a reader of the last LOTR book to understand whats going on if they haven't read the rest of the series.

I don't like Halo anyway. Never got into multiplayer (I generally prefer singleplayer, and if it's absolutely awesome I may go for MP as well).

The problem with Halo is that it's always same damn game. They keep everything in, even the Flood and retarded allies AI.

Yahtzee should have played with subtitles on. I know Jorge pronounces it "mom" but that's just his accent - he's saying "ma'am."

Anyhoo, I guess Reach can join Half-Life 2 at the Mediocrity Table, eh?
I noticed that too, but what was Jorge's comment on "been hers half my life" about then? That would certainly imply she was his mother, or at least the person who looked after him half his life.

Interesting though, you think the pronunciation was off, while I think the subtitles are wrong :p
Even if she is his mother she is still higher in the command chain and as heavily trained (brainwashed) soldiers he would use Ma'am to talk to her while on duty.

So, wait, what? Does this mean Yahztee actually reads comments on his videos? Huh, you learn something new every day I guess.
I'm betting it's page 1, or whatever page his browser picks when he selects "comments." Or maybe he's an avid commenter, but only utilizing a seperate account. An Alias, if you will. :D Perhaps disguised as a smart comic book artist lesbian. HMM!

What do you expect to be a multiplayer review to be?

"It's like single player but it has no story, stays in the same map, continuously respawns weapons and vehicles, and has no monsters or computer controlled fighters."

Except for a few things, you'd be rating people who play the multi-player instead of the multiplayer itself.

Sure he could mention the forge, but it'll be the Guitar Hero World Tour thing all over again (hint: he doesn't think he'd ever stoop doing doing something so boring/geeky).

Sure he could talk about the new mega-sizes of maps. If he actually cared about multiplayer, and was a regular player of Halo 3 multiplayer, all he'd probably mention is that the massive size of a map can start to get in the way of actually playing the game.

As for the different play modes of multiplayer... well... are they any different from the play modes for multiplayer in Halo 3? Any new ones at all? Besides, he COULD spend another 3 minutes coming up with various analogies to describe how each multiplayer mode is just a slightly different way to compare sizes in the locker room, but, I wouldn't want to see it...
