I cannot believe that nobody has yet mentioned Minatsuki Takami. There have been Deadman Wonderland references here and yet nobody has considered the most twisted girl I've seen in anime for a long time. Minatsuki is basically a 17 year old girl who looks sweet and innocent at first, but is actually the most manipulative, sadistic, brutal person you will ever see. She first appears in Deadman Wonderland trying to escape the prison where the series is set with the protagonist, Ganta, but fails to get away, only for it to turn out she orchestrated the whole thing simply to give Ganta an injury before their scheduled superpower fight (the Carnival Corpse) the next day. She manipulates him through the whole jailbreak attempt while staying apparently sweet and pure by 'accidentally' revealing her breasts and other parts of herself and 'accidentally' ripping her dress.

In the Carnival Corpse itself we find her power, her 'Branch of Sin', is the ability to turn her blood into whips which she uses to attack her enemies - she proceeds to not only attak her opponent, Ganta, but also her own brother when he tries to intervene, and uses her brother as a human shield against Ganta's own attacks. Throughtout this, she constantly insults both young men, and claims that clearly neither of them have "ever pelasured a woman" - she discusses this with her own brother, for crying out loud. She also turns out to be a sadist to the point where she gets off on violence, but not as tamely as you'd think - she's literally having an orgasm through the entire fight right in front of her brother and Ganta, and constantly references sex throughout her insults. Ironically, after the fight we see that she's actually very protective of herself and won't even allow any guy in the same room as her when she's getting changed, despite her otherwise provocative nature.

For losing the battle she's sentenced in the prison to have a part of her body removed (fortunately the good guys manage to influence it so she only has a haircut) - she reveals that previously she's had a kidney and half her stomach removed for losing Carnival Corpse fights. This is probably the first time, by the way, that we see any sign of humanity in her, even after she is willing to let Ganta (who only beats her by headbutting her) and her brother live following the fight. Even then she flies off the handle if she even suspects Ganta (who's interested in someone else anyway) of perving - bear in mind she's the one who was getting a literal orgasm from nearly torturing him, both physically and psychologically. She kind of joins the good guys as a minot character later, but even then everything about Minatsuki is twisted and wrong.

She became that way when her mother abandoned her during the Red Hole Incident (a massive earthquake that destroyed Tokyo) ten years earlier - her mother saved a primrose in a pot instead of her own daughter. She thus has a bizarre obsession with flowers, particularly primroses, and uses them to help manipulate people. She also murdered her own father with her Branch of Sin power, and let her brother take the blame (he didn't actually know she was responsible) - not to mention she faked an entire set of abuse instances to make sure her father and brother hated each other, and lied that her father was sexually abusing her as part of that - she was maybe 12 or 13 at the time. And since being incarcerated in Deadman Wonderland she's been subject constantly to experimentation, torture, and literal death matches almost every day, and again probably been getting a new orgasm every day from those fights. So yeah, the girl's completely messed up.

Then again, there are plenty of messed up characters in the series, and they tend to be my favourites anyway. One guy goes psycho and flips out when his assassination plan fails against the good guys, and another young girl (maybe 8 years old) slaughtered her entire kindergarten class because of her whacked out mother's teachings, got sentenced to death to be served at Deadman Wonderland, and spends her time killing the superpowered Deadmen (the good guys) with an oversized elasticated hammer. It's a crazy anime/manga, and I love it xD.

CAPTCHA: funny farm - yes, that's exactly where these people should all be... ;)

I'm going to try to keep this to stuff that hasn't been mentioned yet.

The Mayor from Prentisstown in The Knife of Never Letting Go (a book that is easily one of my most favorite books and is recommended to everyone). He seems likes a cunning psychotic individual, but he is actually insane, in the truest sense of the word.
Aww, ninja'd.

TV show: Solomon Grundy from Justice League Unlimited. I wish I could include the Android from the same show, but he just stopped developing any character after his return.
Book: "Gabriel" from Doppelganger by David Stahler
Movie: Andrew Detmer from the movie Chronicle
Anime: Viral from Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann. His species was pretty much created for two reasons: To be playthings for his king and to exist as sentient beings...with a weak will and very little hope.
Oh oh! One more I forgot:
Webcomic: Fumbles from the webcomic Goblins. I honestly feel for him more than Dies-Horribly. Those characters were named by a prophet when they were born, consider how those names affected them.

Yeah. She was messed up. I wonder if the ending counts as a happy one for her, now that she's completely crossed over into her imaginary world and won't have to face reality ever again. It would have been much better if she learned to accept reality, but in a sense, it's kind of like when Maximus went to see his family after he died in Gladiator.
That's a good question. I see it more along the lines of Brazil, myself, where the mind slips into the fantasy world because you have no hope that your mind can adequately process what comes next. I wonder if she could have faced reality if she could have built any sort of life for herself outside Hollywood.
I wonder what the actress who played her thinks. I was told that she was in a similar predicament and was essentially playing herself.

Sand dan Glokta in The First Law trilogy by Joe Abercrombie! Didn't have a good bone in his body, but that's why I loved him!

Crestfallen soldier in Dark Souls. He's a guy who has been sitting in the central hub, "Firelink Shrine" for months, paralyzed by his fear of death. His hobbies include taunting newbies and sounding depressed. Then when he finally decides to do something about his situation, he dies, loses his sanity and tries to kill you.

The General from Pan's Labyrinth.

His way of doing terrible things with no feeling creates a sense of dread and disgust.
Very rarely do I see a character who just makes me go "THIS is a bad person." After he set his tone, you couldn't help but worry for any character in his presence.

I really like the messed up and odd characters, but when I need it the most, I can't seem to think of any. I did see Rorschach on one of the posts though, he's ONE of them, but he definitely is't my favorite.

I'm about to bring up The Sandman actually.

Delirium is the personification of insanity and does spout random stuff, not to mention have floating fish for balloons. But anyways she's one of the more funnier characters, especially during Brief Lives. Delirium driving a car is pretty hilarious.

Sadly she was formally Delight and we never known what happened to her to make her go insane.

I know im uber nerd for saying this, but.... MAJIN BUU. An impossibly maniacal killer of godly power, who just so happens to also be childishly fun loving, carefree, and hilarious. Yes.

One of my favorite books on the movie is called Close-Up On Sunset Boulevard by Sam Staggs. It's an interesting, detailed look about the production, the actors involved & how the film has endured. I think it's worth checking out, if you're interested. There are excerpts from interviews, personal letters and other materials as well as little essays on other films/pop culture related to SB. Enjoy!

I'm sure there are plenty of characters that are more 'fucked up' than this, but I first thought of Sy Parrish, from the movie 'One Hour Photo' - a character played by Robin Williams. Left me a bit unnerved.

To bring something new to this list, I'll go with two characters from a wonderful-wonderful flick True Romance:
Drexl Spivey, and Sicilian Mobster Vincenzo Coccotti (best mafioso role ever, imho).
Both (particularly, Drexl) defy description, you have to see it to believe it.

As Vincenzo calmly states in the conversation: "Go tell angels in heaven you've never seen evil so singularly personified, than in the face of the man who killed you."
Oh god yes... I didn't like that movie that much, but Vincenzo was amazing...

Sander Cohen from Bioshock is my nominee. I didn't even like Bioshock much but the segment with Cohen was made by the fact that this guy is so deliciously fucked up. He's not just a plain psychopath like the others, he gets you to crawl inside his head and try to see life as he does. It's deeply disturbing. And at the end of it all you don't even fight him, he just continues to exist in his malevolent fantasy world while you're left to move on and try to forget about him.

I'm gonna say Javik from Mass Effect. He had one of the worst backstories anyone could ever have. Seriously, if you think about it...

[mild spoilers]
to have an ability that won't just leave you with your own memories of living in a broken empire a century behind any feasible attempt of saving it, but the memory of 20 other soldiers who also had to thanks to the beacons, that must leave you messed up. The snippets he tells of are truly horrifying (like how the Reapers appropriated their children so the Protheans wouldn't shoot, or about the death cult on that one planet, just the psychotic strictness of Prothean rules probably necessary to make soldiers fight such an unfathomable evil...). And then, if you let him regain his own memories - well, there's a reason he says he wants to commit suicide after the fight against the Reapers ends if he's seen those, right? Anyway, he's an asshole, but there's really good explanations for it (litereally any person who has ever liked him, known him or even heard about him, even someone who just shares a marginally close cultural context with him is dead and long, long forgotten), but he's not a woobie or "fixable". I always liked that.

Lautrec from dark souls, hey man thanks you saved my life....repays you by killing your main save point...tries to kill you if you premtively try to stop this after playing through the game a second time after having no shrine the first time.
