*twitch* ALL AI IS BRAINLESS! None of them currently operate over a neural network, nor an actual human brain.

As for modern AI, it isn't actually that smart because it only appears to be intelligent, not is actually intelligent.

Left 4 Dead.

Haha get it? Because they're zombies, so they're brainless. Man, I'm funny.

In an open source free FPS called AssaultCube, the AI is anti-dumb. The instant you're within the same room as it, your head gets shot off.

I think as far as Brainless AI goes, all must bow before the goomba, they just walk forward, do they stop at the cliff, no, they walk right over it.

Carmine from Gears 2 was actually helpful in the campaign.
This. I was more sad to see him die not only because he was a better guy than A. Carmine but he was also a damn good Sniper.

Any game that requires allies to survive to get past some point in the game, because I can guarantee the AI will get itself killed at least 3 times before you get past that part.

For me this would have to go to the otherwise excellent Gears of War 2 in both campain and multiplayer. First off in campain as Yahtzee already mentioned the friendly AI has a frustrating habit to leave you to die. And in multiplayer death matches when you are the only human player and the rest are bots (don't have live at the moment) there is nothing worse than dying and having to watch your AI team struggle to fight while unable to even figure out where the enemy are.
What is the dumbest AI you ever encountered and how did it effect you as a gamer?
Why yes, they do have the tendency to leave you to die, considering that you can't be revived in single player. Please don't quote Yahtzee on the things he was outright wrong on

Plase forgive the lateness of this reply but if I may.
A. In Gears 2 I was revived in single player a fair bit, just not consistently enough.
B. Are you actually suggesting that the design team would make it so that when you take enough damage you don't just die but lie around on the ground pathetically dragging your sorry bleeding arse around for fifteen seconds before finally dying? You really think any designer would INTENTIONALLY do that?
If they did that on purpose they deserve to have their nipples fried on a ten thousand vault electric fence.
What happened to the quote? Anyway, no you just outright died in single player, no reviving.
Yeah sorry, when I was posting the quote I think I must have clicked something I wasn't supposed to :p
But anyway, I think your thinking of Gears of War 1, because in 2 whever I got shot down I would be lyin around on the ground and eventually an AI character would come and revive or... not as is more common an occurance.

Hmm...I could have sworn that didn't happen in single player. If not for my bricked Xbox, I'd check.

Mercenaries 2 AI is absolutely horrible. There's just so many flaws that it's annoying to list them all.
Though the AI in Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory was pretty funny. Throw grenades and flashbangs around the area right near the enemy and you can hear them say "Hmm, what was that? Must of been a rat."

Sheva in Resident Evil 5.

"I'm going to use only my pistol, and take all of the ammo for everything, and when you request the ammo I probably won't give it to you, m'kay Chris?"

*Chris's face has been gnawed off by mutant zombie dogs and can't answer Sheva.*

"Chris!"

YOU ARE DEAD

Friendly ai seems to be very tough to pull off, Gears 2's friendlys are pretty moronic but I think Halo 3's marines take the cake, they've run me over on several occasions and trying to operate the turret of a warthog while they drive is a one way ticket to an early grave.
You too?

I was coming in to say this.
But might as well still add:
I can recall spending hours messing with the Halo AI (first game). The marines were god aweful. The grunt allies in Halo 2, did better, and they usually die in 2 shots of anything.

Painkiller, because it basically just lets them run straight at you.

most shooter's ai frustrates me, in cod, your guys sit there shooting at infinite enemies while you have to do all the work. and all the enemies know this so they shoot at you like you are wearing a sign that badmouths their god or something
