Any friendly AI is almost guaranteed to be more trouble than they are worth. If they are in charge of healing you they tend to forget (or drag you into the crossfire thanx Army of 2). If you need to escort them they will run across the map and throw themselves on a grenade. And if they are supposed to have your back they will waste all thier ammo on a wall and laugh at you when you get overwhelmed.

I do have a theory about friendly AI though. I think the computer does it knowingly and willingly since you are asking it to fight itself.

A lot of games seem to think that mediocre pathfinding is all you really need for AI. The Elder Scrolls franchise is especially guilty of this.

For me this would have to go to the otherwise excellent Gears of War 2 in both campain and multiplayer. First off in campain as Yahtzee already mentioned the friendly AI has a frustrating habit to leave you to die. And in multiplayer death matches when you are the only human player and the rest are bots (don't have live at the moment) there is nothing worse than dying and having to watch your AI team struggle to fight while unable to even figure out where the enemy are.
What is the dumbest AI you ever encountered and how did it effect you as a gamer?
Why yes, they do have the tendency to leave you to die, considering that you can't be revived in single player. Please don't quote Yahtzee on the things he was outright wrong on

Plase forgive the lateness of this reply but if I may.
A. In Gears 2 I was revived in single player a fair bit, just not consistently enough.
B. Are you actually suggesting that the design team would make it so that when you take enough damage you don't just die but lie around on the ground pathetically dragging your sorry bleeding arse around for fifteen seconds before finally dying? You really think any designer would INTENTIONALLY do that?
If they did that on purpose they deserve to have their nipples fried on a ten thousand vault electric fence.

Sheva from RE5. Shes not brainless, because she does do a lot. But she is incredibly fucking stupid. The people who programmed her intelligence designed her to

1. Die a lot
2. Waste all your items without care of preservation
3. Not do the fucking melee attacks during boss battles
Dear God yes, she is so fucking annoying. I pray for a DLC where you can take her out of the game and get a bigger inventory

Extreme Paintbrawl.

I shit you not, the AI had perfect aim, and would simply run forward until they killed everything or died.

This led to them running into walls constantly until you turn the corner and get 1-shot.

Medal of Honor Rising sun, they had this annoying ability to run in front of me when i was launching a rocket, thus killing us both

Also Battlefield Vietnam, i was watching my friend play once, he took a hill by himself was 1 sec from capturing the point when a friendly bot flew over and napalmed him

i think some of the problems with friendly AI is related to game developers not wanting a game to be to easy for the player, so they scale back the AI, the problems arise when you cant let that same AI die.

What happened to the quote? Anyway, no you just outright died in single player, no reviving.

To be honest, I don't think the dumbest thing that has ever happened to me as a result of "teammates" actions were committed by AIs its some of the people on Live that I question the "programming" of.

Not that the AI was completely stupid but frustrating at any given time was Persona 3 allies, whats the icing is you can't give them commands and avoid such a situation in which the AI does something epically dense.

I am seriously looking at this thread with a sad, sad eye. Everybody's mentioning freshly baked games such as Halo, Gears 2, RE5 and so on, with rare exeptions. You may all complain, but hear this: You're all a bunch of whiny 13 year olds.

If you complain about the allies in Gears 2, you have never seen truly stupid AI. Heck I almost want to say that it barely exist in relatively known games nowadays. Come back when you have plown through "The World is not enough"(Ai was about: Shoot when bond is seen; run from grenades) on PS or any enemy or friend from Jedi Knight.

All of the military units in Halo Wars are REALLY dumb. Don't click on the opposite side of the map and hope they will make it there. I remember during one mission of the campaign, the one where you have to transport a fusion core, you need an Elephant to carry the core. I clicked the elephant and then clicked the core to hook the two together. The elephant rolled up alongside the core and got stuck in a perptual loop in which it turned around in circles infinitely. WTF.

The everquest mercenary AI is flat retarded. The healers don't heal until you are so close to dead the heal won't land OR they overheal and hit you with a heal when you are at 95% health.

The warrior AI runs into the middle of huge packs of mobs while you are pulling and wipes groups when the healer doesn't heal them.

One memorable game is Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri. But only the combat AI. With the exception of Miriam (evil, probe team spamming *****), their stratergy was to build hundreds of Artillery, which can only reduce you units to 1hp, but never kill them.
