Truth from FMA creeps me out a bit.
It's just a silhouette that drags you through a portal of knowledge after taking a few of your body parts.
And the massive fucking grin doesn't help

Those Synx drawings remind me of porn more than anything else.

Er I mean, OH GOD HOW HORRIBLE MY EYES.

What terrifies me the most, is something that looks like a normal thing or person, but something is ever so slightly off.
It's that uncanny valley where the brain really begins to panic trying to reconcile the recognizable and comfortable with the new and alien.

And this too. This really fucked with me when I received it from my 5th grade book order.

Which is probably why they work. There are fewer things more disturbing then giving a sexual undertone to something already creepy as hell. From what I understand, the original designs for the xenomorphs and facehuggers were even more obvious sexual innuendos/things then what they turned out as. I mean, have you seen Giger's work? Giger is a sick fuck, but without him (and people like him) we wouldn't have truly sick things to fill in those roles that require them. [small]Pyramid head and several SH2 monsters also come to mind.[/small] Basically, all the awesome stuff.

I remember reading that book when I was 8!

Why is this the most obscure book in Saskatchewan (only one in public, school, library, and commercial circulation in the province at the time!) yet it is so famous on the internet?!

Might have something to do with them changing the artwork and almost ceased printing the Stephen Gammel illustrated ones entirely.

And that video was excellent, thank you for posting it. :>

My personal favourite:

Not too creepy looking but anyone that played Zelda as a kid knows why this guy's here.

Another one I just kinda like the design of is Legion/Granfalloon:

Seriously... it's like someone rolled a katamari through Auschwitz...

How about I tell you about Ken Birdwell's first day at Valve, in a story entitled "Mr. Friendly's Phallus"? If the text is too small for you, click it and it'll link you to a bigger picture.

Those of you who have actually played Half Life will probably remember that Mister Friendly was absent from the final game, but he does appear in the game files. The idea of a "sexual" alien invasion does, however, carry over to Half Life 2, with the Combine placing the suppression field over earth, and the promises of "non-mechanical reproductive simulation" to particularly useful CPs. When you think about the fact that the combine aren't an invasion force that just kills people, but one that stops them from feeling any kind of sexual pleasure, it really puts Half Life 2 in a new, somewhat disturbing light.

I don't know if this is more creative than disturbing but I nominate the monsters from Soul Sacrifice.
Taking cliche, overdone, sanitized Western monsters and turning them into cool, unique, actually rather horrific designs? Fuckin' Sweet.

Having really interesting lore behind each one that show why they look so monstrous? The cherry on top.

Haven't played the game due to not having a vita so I can't talk about the game but I've been having a blast just reading the lore on it's wiki.

I'll just let The Bogleech gush over it for me seeing as this article was the reason I learned about this game

In fact, I think there are a bunch of articles on Bogleech about interesting monsters from media.

...Oh, of course. How could I forget Bogleech's very own Mortasheen? Want a cool monster design? Click one of these at random. http://bogleech.com/mortasheen.htm

Wait a minute... wasn't there something like this behind glass in Blue Shift? Or I might be thinking of a Halflife mod. Either way I know I've seen something like this in a glass cage. If it was hidden in the original game's code, was it modeled out and everything? That would explain why I may have seen it in a mod.

EDIT
Holy crap I was right! I have encountered this thing.

Yes indeedy, you have seen it in a mod. See http://half-life.wikia.com/wiki/Mr._Friendly for more details.

Mah nigga !

I played a TON of soul sacrifice and the monster design is probably one of my favourite, especially because of the added lore, and what they say during battle which can be as disturbing (Or sad, if you're fighting the jack-o-lantern who just wants to go back to his momma :( )

Soul Sac is up there in monster design for me with Silent Hill and Castlevania. They're just that good

This creepy son of a *****.

Stop staring at me! Just that perfect level of humanoid, but deformed and warped. Be unsettling.

stopitstopitstopitstopit. I never actually took a glance at the cover art for these albums, and looks like those days are over.

I have watched a ton of anime and read a lot of manga and I have found the most frightening creatures. These dreadful creatures are often grouped under the title of moe or moeblob.

Prepare for these disgusting creatures. The huge eyes, the giant heads, the noodle necks and stick like limbs. They're like a twisted version of little girls which is what elicits the horror. Worse they do the most mundane cute bullshit, which somehow mesmerizes large groups of males enslaving them with their love of moe.

For some reason the pic doesn't work for me.

Also, the worst monster ever:
Seriously, youtube the scene with him and be horrified.

I'm a really big fan of super-subtle divergences from the human norm. Even Slender Man goes a tad too far for my tastes, and I'm always frustrated with how Lovecraft-enamored GGI artists tend to figure "The Innsmouth look" means hanging up your coat and letting the Practical Effects guys turn their actors into fish-monsters.

The thing is, Robert Olmstead makes it pretty clear it took him a while to figure out there was something wrong with the Innsmouth locals. So gently widen the eyes in CG, give your actors a pasty look with some makeup and maybe some sort of prosthetic that forces them to display a speech impediment, and you'll creep me right the fuck out. I don't need anything more than that.

The more overt and bizarre the creatures, the less unnerved I am. Chtulhu isn't exactly an eidolon of abject horror or anything for me, and I've always found that the Gorn-esque tendencies of certain branches of Japanese horror to be too explicit to be effective.

About Gantz, for instance - the movie works better for me, seeing as most of the aliens the kids fight in it are constrained to a more humanoid form by budget and makeup constraints. The shallots-obsessed dwarf who turns into a hulking monstrosity if provoked creeps me out so much more than any instance of "Oh, look at what we did with human genitalia and the female form! Isn't that fucked up?"

As for Uzumaki, I found that it mostly turned into a kind of weird excuse for the mangaka to go on some sort of "Ukiyo-E from Hell" bender that lost its appeal after a while. The movie quickly lost its thrust and devolved into a big CGI spectacle. Not that I didn't have fun catching all the swirly bits by pausing my Blu-Ray at the right spots. :)

On the plus side, the manga's ending is more effective than the movie's.

My favourite piece of unsettling artwork would be this rather classic portrait of Innsmouth's patriarch, Barnabas Marsh.

Kinda disappointed by the fact that the portrait contains the "Chtulhu Fhtagn" quote, though, seeing as the Innsmouth locals worship Dagon, not Chtulhu. Most non-official takes on the Mythos almost never fail to mesh these two together, though.
