Planetside in it's heyday. There's something about being a tiny cog in a huge MMOFPS war machine that is utterly epic.

And the sad thing is, very few people on this forum will have ever played it.
Planetside was a very good game with a unique feel to it, the main issue I had though was that it was a little too 'rock paper scissors' for my liking.

I don't know if they fixed the controls for the PC or if the non-analog nature of the keyboard interface makes the difference, but I never had that sort of problem controlling the Mako at all (I've played through that section of the game several times now and I never even come close to failing it). The way turning worked was pretty wonky though, since that's not at all how cars operate, but I got used to it.
Never played the 360 version but indeed using a keyboard to steer it was absolutely horrible, at high speed the slightest tap in one direction would send it skidding off into a wall on the other side of the map. To complete that section you pretty much have to go as slow as possible, edging around any obstacles.

Then allow me to make your freaking day: You don't need one! Behold the wonders of the Freespace 2 Source Code Project [http://www.hard-light.net/wiki/index.php/Getting_started]!

Ever since Volition released the source code to the community, enterprising modders have been hard at work updating and improving it extensively - the end result is a version that runs on modern machines and looks like it could have been released a great deal more recently than the decade ago it originally hit shelves.

Just scroll down through that page and you'll find all the relevant links to get yourself going with it [small](including a link to Good Old Games should you find yourself needing to buy a copy (for a measly $6))[/small], and that's just the tip of the iceberg as there are a ton of mods and several total conversions of note. The SCP has/is also been/being developed for the Mac OS and Linux, just in case you aren't running Windows at all these days.

Stumbling upon the SCP was one of my happiest days in semi-recent memory, so it's always nice to pass that unmitigated joy along to others.
Holy fucking shit that looks awesome. I'll give it a read through in a minute although I think I might end up regretting the switch to Win7 recently.

The first truelly "epic" game i played would be Elite. but overall the most epic game i ghave ever played is World of Warcraft or perhaps Star wars galaxies in the old days.

Xenogears (look it up)

You fight god with a giant robot.
'nuff said.
In SMT Nocturne you can fight god with Dante, Beezlebub, and Metatron if you so desire.

Lucifer too.

You are my new best friend!

If it was hard to tell, I agree. The Kingdom Hearts games are the best once you can get past the Disny thing.

Despite what people say, when you leave the alien ship in Crysis and the shit hits the fan, things get ridiculously cinematic and superb. I absoloutely loved the more scripted parts of the game. Obviously I really enjoyed the sand-box-em up parts as well, but... After the alien ship...

Wow.

Mass Effect is also ridiculously epic.

tie between shadow of the colossus and uncharted 2. the storytelling in both was astounding, but both had 2 completely different styles of storytelling, so i cant compare them. therefore, tie.

Half-Life series. (including Portal)
MechWarrior/Battletech saga.
Homeworld.
Metroid Prime series.
Freespace series.

These would be my choices if by "epic" you mean exquisite, grand-scaled gaming with phenomenal artist designs, near-endlessly fun gameplay, and either lovable and memorable characters, or a grandiose and well-written narrative. (or both)

If you mean epic as it filled me with the feeling of epicness (it's not a word I know) after or during the game then it must be Half-Life 2

Fallout 3 was pretty epic, especially the ending bit. I am using the original definition of the word here. Other games of a truly epic scale would be Rome: Total War, Halo, Dawn of War, maaaybe World of Warcraft, Crysis, and Mass Effect. Possibly Oblivion, but the great battle to save humanity with all of eight combatants on either side was so anticlimactic I think it ruined the "epicness". Oh, and Freelancer counts. Freelancer was awesome that way.

Final Fantasy X. When you get to the part where the game starts in the REAL game, you have a feeling that you are part of the cycle. You break the cycle, but the fayth's can't keep dreaming once their purpose is gone....

I would rather just have a giant robot.

particularly this one

Epic in length depth and story? Final Fantasies VII through IX (X had a great story, but was like a quarter of the length). And, if you play it all the way through and do all the sidequests, Mass Effect is definitely epic. Skipping the sidequests means you miss a lot of the peripheral story, though.

Epic in terms of OMFG LOL EPIC? Fallout 3, because there are so many different ways you can make shit explode...and you can eat your victims after you pwn them with a teddy bear and make all their limbs fly off! =D Yummy. Really, though, I think most of the epic lulz games were from earlier console generations.
