In this world we all have "phrases"... not catch phrases mind you, but general phrases. Our almost pre-npc-programed auto response to various situations.

Me: how was you day?
Person: not good, my sister died
Me: that's good that's good... no wait no, sorry, pre programed response.

I'm not sure if "that's what's up" counts as a phrase or a catch phrase but i FUCKING hate it. It doesn't sound like your agreeing with me. it sounds like your saying exactly what i just said back at me.

Me: Blue is my favorite color
Person: That's whats up = dude, your favorite color is Blue

The one phrase i hate the most though is "I don't know what to tell you". Obtain any bad news of shit in your own life, from not knowing what to eat to actual tragedy and tell a few friends and this phrase is eventually going to pop up. I truly hate it. It is the most in sensitive "couldn't careless" thing to say to someone that has just lost their grandpa.

I just hate the phrase. From physically asking for advice to just generally venting, you are opening up to a friend and to hear them say "I don't know what to tell you" is just insensitive.

So what "phrases" do you hate?

You know all those phrases people say to just stop your train of thought cold? Like, say, "If you don't like it, don't watch it?" or "If you're so smart, how come YOU haven't done better?" Or maybe just "I am right because everyone agrees with me?"
You know, the ones that make NO FUCKING SENCE when you give even FIVE FUCKING SECONDS of thought to them?
Yeah, I don't like those. Like, at all.
(And yes, someone actualy argued that they were right because it was a popular opinion. Worse still - this person was 15 going on 16. I mean, fuck.)

"It is what it is."

It has no importance, and doesn't answer anything.

It's kind of irritating to me when people say 'bro'.

I hate the word "Peng"

And every phrase it's used in.
Peng got me through Dead Space. *Cries*

Maybe it's just me and it's not really a phrase but when people ask me "Hey, what are you doing?" after observing me for a minute or so. It's so annoying, thankfully, I automatically say something like rock climbing or flying a airplane.

"You're just jealous of..."

Even if it's not even a topic where one could be jealous of anything. It's so annoying.

Listen, bro. I don't know what to tell you, but it is what it is. That's what's up.

"The exception that proves the rule."

Which doesn't even begin to make sense.

"Could care less."

More a bastardisation than an original phrase proper, but honestly! Do people who say this listen to the words coming out of their mouth?

"I am bias."

You are an abstract concept incarnate you say?

What it actually means is "I'm making a willful choice to not learn from this experience". It almost always happens after someone screws something up.

Mine is easily: "...you know?"

It's like whoever is speaking isn't sure you're keeping up, presumably because you're too stupid or not paying attention.

May I suggest to this an all-purpose, sympathetic: "I'm sorry. Is there anything I can do to help?" to the first person (the one venting or expressing the problem)?

So what "phrases" do you hate?
The "literally" mentioned above does irk. But "I could care less" comes close. Think about it. It means you do care, and maybe a lot. It should be "I couldn't care less", which means you don't care at all. I also have ire for the "NOT!" and "EPIC FAIL!"

Umm no actually :/ Consider maybe that people genuinely don't know what to say.

I've only been in that situation once or twice (luckily perhaps) and it's not something I'm experienced with. I don't think either time I immediately knew what to say in response, I just had to think it through try my best to comfort them.

It's actually really annoyed me that you've jumped to a conclusion and considered that insensitive.

I'm going to have to take a page from Hank Yarbo from the show Corner Gas (Hooray For A Good Canadian Comedy!)

People who say "Oh wait I lied."

Example used from the show:

"It's Thrusday... Oh Wait, I lied. It's Friday."

Oh, and I had to add the "ghetto" phrase "Ya feel me?" to that list. The mental image from that squicks me very badly. Imagine groping the person who is talking to you. No, I DON'T "feel you" and never want to touch you at all! D:

Isn't that the whole point of but? It's a conjunction word.

"I have just won 2,000,000$. You are not getting anything of it" and "Yes. I don't want anyone ever knowing that we see each other" both seem much harsher minus the but, and the second example doesn't make sense without it. That's just me though...

OT: I don't know if it counts but anyone who uses chillax seriously in a sentence deserves a quick slap around the chops.

One that is used quite a lot on these forums: "Am I the only one who (insert claim here)?"

I hate it with the force of a thousand suns.

Same as the other fellow above, I don't agree with this at all. If someone's unhappy because a family member is dead (or such a thing), they're not looking for advice, and they're certainly not looking for someone to tell them how they should go about solving the problem. It's the 'I am moved by your story but there is no appropriate action I could take' dialogue choice, and it's exactly what most people want to hear in that kind of situation.

So what "phrases" do you hate?
Back in the days of school, teachers used to say 'I don't recall asking anybody to start talking'. I hated that. It did not sound as clever as they seemed to think.
