Anyone remember Koudelka? The developers went on to create the Shadowhearts series.
Koudelka was an early PS1 game, one of the first console - based adventure games with relatively realistic graphics. So, it was no longer necessary for the producers to explain what the various things on the screen were, as players could now see it for themselves.
The Koudelka producers had failed to take this into consideration.
I'm exploring a room, I see a cupboard, and decide to take a look inside. I'm low on healing items, and figure there might be some inside. I examine the cupboard, and get a close - up of its door, accompanied by the following message:
"You see a cupboard."
OK. Fine. I quickly click the message away, eager to get at the goodies. It is instantly replaced with a new message:
"Do you want to open the cupboard? Yes/No"
Getting annoyed, I hit "Yes", and am treated to a close - up of the cupboard's contents. Which turns out to be A MUMMIFIED CORPSE WEARING A WEDDING DRESS! Keep in mind that I was expecting to find goodies or some sort of quest item - I nearly have a heart attack!
I vaguely notice that another message has appeared, and spend the next minute or so trying to calm myself down enough to focus on it.
Eventually I succeed, and read the message. It says:
"Inside the cupboard is a mummified corpse wearing a wedding dress."
DUH!
The sheer uselessness and idiocy of the message pisses me off bigtime, and I quickly click it away, eager to be done with the whole idiotic business and move on. Immediately, ANOTHER message pops up:
"The corpse suddenly attacks."
Yeah. I was actually getting mad at the damn GAME at this point: "Sorry, bud, no health for you, here's a boss fight!" Hooray.
(To be fair, defeating the corpse DID get me a quest item!)
