Most shocking twist or ending to a game?

Most recently Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I just did not see it coming, so while the prospect of it isn't that far out, the amount of "Whoa.... WHOA!... That means... oh wow!" implications was huge.

Also, I was fairly surprised by Infamous 2's endings. I was expecting them to drag the series out. But nope, finished. And finished well. Nice to see that happen for once, rather then a series being a trilogy... then dairy cow to be milked and abused for as long as it can.

That ending came pretty much outta nowhere, your entire space ship, along with all your friend suddenly exploded.
And then, after seeing that and taking revenge on those who did it you merely float away in a little shuttlecraft into oblivion.

The Most shocking recent twist? The last segment of Heavy Rain. I'm not good with spoiler tags, so I'm not going to say what it is, other than it completely shocked me and left me boiling with rage. At the game, that is. The twist was stupid and illogical. The developers actually admitted to it - because they intended to include super-natural elements into the storyline of Heavy Rain, but playtesters didn't like those super-natural elements, so they removed most of the super-natural stuff, but left some of it in, presumably because they didn't want to have to re-render entire scenes. As a result, some elements of the story DO NOT MAKE SENSE and are NEVER explained and the twist at the end, while it would have made SOME sense if they had left the super-natural stuff in, ends up making no sense at all. Heavy Rain's story is literally a case of: "We changed the story half-way through development, and we couldn't be bothered remaking some parts of the game". And it shows. It goddamn well shows.

If I can say the most shocking twist in the game, not necessarily due to the ending, then I'd definitely have to say Metal Gear 4. The whole 4th act was amazing, especially the boss fight.

If we're sticking to game endings, then... Well I don't really know if I have a good one for that. Maybe Chrono Trigger simply due to the sheer number of endings you could have?

Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction

What the hell are these Zoni doing kidnapping Clank?! And now you're not happy about beating Tachyon, you're sad and pissed about Clank.

There is no Metal Gear 4. Did you perhaps mean Metal Gear Solid 4?

I was actually quite certain that *spoiler* you were Kessler the entire time. The moment he came about in the game I called it, not as a guess, and was correct. Not to say that it wasn't a good ending, I actually enjoyed it a lot. I just wasn't personally surprised by it.

Well, there's obviously Bioshock. That's the one that pops into my head right away.

I would argue that, after the Andrew Ryan sequence, the Bioshock story became utterly bland and predictable.

In the first few levels alone, I managed to piece together that Atlas was Fontaine. That much was expected. And after Andrew Ryan dies, the rest is just a journey to kill the big ol' bad guy, just like every other game and their mother.

Well, there's obviously Bioshock. That's the one that pops into my head right away.

I suppose at the time I hadn't been thinking much about that kind of thing, so that took me by surprise (I actually played all the way through it while hanging out with friends, so it's not like we were really 'thinking' about much at all). And I guess that it's a very lackluster shock if you've played System Shock 2 which sounds like it was pretty much the exact same.

But that wasn't the only spoiler I was refering to though.

The fact that Andrew Ryan is actually your father, which made the whole killing him with a golf club part seem even stranger. Not to mention the fact that it turns out the PC was actually a hyper-fast grown man basically nade to come back and kill his father by hijacking a plane and killing everyone else on it. The 'would you kindly' being a controlling phrase also was a fairly big twist in my opinion. That audiolog of the child (or was it a woman) being forced to snap a puppy's neck still gives me a little shiver. If only they could have made the entire game that level of messed up.

And I do agree the ending was a bit... lackluster. They could have ended it with the Andrew Ryan part where everything was revealed and it would have made the game end on a much more interesting note (even if it did feel somewhat incomplete, though at least that way they could have tried making a better sequel using the big-bad instead of that stupid replacement character)

Well, let me rephrase, the first time I played through it, it came as a complete surprise to me. BUT, when I replayed it again on the bad karma it was kind of obvious, but it was still a great ending.

So, you pretty much spend the majority of the game fighting your way through bad guys, just to save your captured master. You kill the damn Emperor of china to get to him. Then you finally reach him and...well he uses his super ninja powers to kill you. Which I was NOT expecting. Turns out that he had planned this since he found you as a baby. And considering your in your 20's that's a long time for a plan to become the new Emperor of china to come into action. I gotta give him props for that at least.

That Kessler was really you the whole time and knew exactly what you would do in the case where you had to either save a group of doctors or your girlfriend.

I might agree with you here if I actually understood that twist the first time around. Call me stupid, but the first time I saw the ending cutscene, I said out loud, "Wait... What?" I had to consult Wikipedia to find out what the hell was going on. And it still was just as puzzling the second time around.

I do believe that's the only time I've seen an in-game explanation as to why you, a high level bad-ass with magical powers and gear who's just fought his way through a bajillion enemies, can possibly be threatened by one man.

OT: Because all the big ones have already been mentioned, I shall give a small shout-out to 1213, a free game made by Yahtzee. I did not see the twist in that coming, and it made me sad.

you realize that everything that the Prince has gone through in all three games is actually him telling his story to Farah at the end of the third game, just like the Sands of Time (first game) is him telling the story to Farah at the beginning (end?) of the first game.

In the first when you find out you ARE Kessler.

And the second where Cole dies and in the end a lightning bolt hits in the form of a question mark...it puzzles me to this day.

Also Red Dead Redemption, that was too shocking, it rattled me.

Where John gets shot a heap, I always screw that part up, I didn't mark then and I just looked like a tool who didn't shoot.

When you watch the video tape in the hotel and realize what really happened to Mary, the mood of the entire game changes. I felt numb from that point on in the game. I was horrified at what James had done but at the same time, the story was so well-crafted that I didn't feel any sort of disconnect with the character. If anything, the entire sequence kind of made me feel some of his guilt.

In the first mission where you kill Castro it's like, "WTF?! That never happened!" and from there the story continues with an altered history so you don't know if you're playing an actual alternate timeline or reliving the delusions of an unreliable narrator suffering from PTSD.

Oh wait, that's what should have happened.
