Most surprisingly good game

So, what's the game that made you reel back in confusion at how good it was?

I'm sure there are a few games that you found strangely fun, but what's the game you were most surprised at?

For me, it was 'Tombi!', a game where I was expecting a dull side scroller that I now have in my all time favourite games.

Columns for Sega. I always watched my sister play it as a kid and i would chant "THIS IS BORING!". It looked boring in comparison to Golden Axe & Streets of Rage. It was a nice suprise when i fell in love with Columns after my first go.

I had expected a cheap movie to game knockoff when I first picked up King Kong.

Forty minutes later and I was completely hooked, I loved it. I loved fighting dinosaurs using strategy rather then brute force and really every person who said to me 'dude that game looks shit, it's sad you would even have that on your shelf' I have handed to controller and he too was hooked.
It's a shame it was so short though, I'd love to see a fully decked out version of that game with all the same mechanics.

The Witcher, didn't know what to think of it when i got it but gave it a shot. Don't regret it, one of my most favourite games and can't wait for the sequel!

STFU...
That's Starwars the Force Unleashed.
Got it for PC, everyone said it was a horrible port and the original game sucked too...
And I loved it. Even though it had it's flaws.

No, its SWTFU.
The game is alright, but nothing compared to past Star Wars titles.
Well, true that, I'm still waiting for Jedi Knight IV.

Far Cry 2 I guess. Everyone was complaining about something. Whether it were these forums or Amazon.co.uk reviews. Sure, it was flawed, but I seeing as it's realistic approach and African setting is the polar opposite to the fantasy, run'n'gun-ish gameplay of the original, I really wasn't expecting to like it.

Final Fantasy XII. Everyone goes on about how it's not like the other Final Fantasys which is the precise reason why it's so good. Gone with the arbitrary, idealistic love story with a clear main character sided with pointless, no strategy battle sequences; in with a political driven plot with enjoyable, meaningful fights.

I replay Crackdown *constantly*. It's actually some sort of illness at this point, I believe.

That the "crack" part of crackdown if you wern't aware.

Kingdom Hearts for me. A final fantasy/disney crossover with ships flying between lands made of gummi? You'd think it would be childish and sucky but it's actually rather decent.

The way everyone pitched GTA IV to me, I'd swear it was gonna be the worst game of all time. Played it, loved it, still play it.

Jedi Knight 2: Jedi Outcast; Jedi Knight was a decent game but this sequel blew much of the games that year out of the water.

We need a Jedi Knight 5 btw just for the ridiculously long official name:
Star Wars: Dark Forces 5: Jedi Knight 4: Jedi Outcast 3: Jedi Academy 2: The Sequel

At last, that makes two of us who love that game. Please letFFXIII be good too (and at some point in 2010, not 2011), I'm not impressed by the teasers so far.
