Arkham Asylum. I expected a crap game, because you know, it's Batman.

But I came out playing one of the best games I had played in years.
Think I should buy it? I have the money.. But.. Yeah.. It's batman T_T Should I not be put off by the movie port stereotype? e.e

Edit: SORRY D: Dubble Poest.
Yes, you should. It's not a movie port, totally original. So much fun, and Mark. Freaking. Hamil as the Joker.

Flamebait much?.
Not really. Just look at previous Batman games. He doesn't have the best track record. I thought this would be no exception, until I played it.
Ok, my mistake. I thought that was just a general kind of "BATMAN SUCKS LULZ" comment. Sorry 'bout that.
It's okay. I actually should have explained it a bit more, so it's my fault, I'd say.

OT: Plants vs. Zombies was way more fun and addictive than I thought it would be, I only bought it because it was in the 75% off Steam sale

For me the surprsinglyly good game was kingdom hearts remake chain of memories especially since on I was tryin to see if the games were any good so I watched a lets play of the first game then felt that playin the first game myself would have been a pain since I couldn't find it so I went and bought chain of memories instead which much to my surprise was actually pretty fun and the story kinda a drew me in quite easily.

Final Fantasy XII. Everyone goes on about how it's not like the other Final Fantasys which is the precise reason why it's so good. Gone with the arbitrary, idealistic love story with a clear main character sided with pointless, no strategy battle sequences; in with a political driven plot with enjoyable, meaningful fights.
At last, that makes two of us who love that game. Please letFFXIII be good too (and at some point in 2010, not 2011), I'm not impressed by the teasers so far.
You should know, I hope, that Final Fantasy 12 was made by the same people who made Tactics, another game that, at the time, threw out everything that was familiar about Final Fantasy to make a much, much better game.

Oh oh, and for most surprisingly good game, I'll go with Resident Evil (the Gamecube remake). Until that game I had no interest in those sort of survival horror games. After that, I ended up with Fatal Frame, Silent Hill, and Eternal Darkness and never looked back.

OT: Crysis. Saw a friend playing it, and it seemed pretty bland and uninteresting to me, but when he let me try it out, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it.
No, I actually agree with him.

I mean, it was a superhero game. With Batkman. It was 99.9% guaranteed to suck. When the first trailers showed up I told everybody who was willing to listen that it was a scientfic impossibility that a 3D Batman game turned out well. Almost as much as a Castlevania.

So, you know, check out that new Castlevania game that's coming out. Just in case.
I'm on that boat too. When I first saw the screenshots and teaser, I thought that it would turn out a flawed game with clunky combat and poorly designed levels like most Batman games. It was a licensed game from an unproven developer. I thought I'd try it out just because the cast and crew of the Animated series was involved, the graphics were decent and my love of Batman would give it a single brownie point.

Boy was I wrong. It's been my favorite game this year.

For me, it was 'Tombi!', a game where I was expecting a dull side scroller that I now have in my all time favourite games.
Tombi! and Tombi! 2 are also my favourite games, I remember looking at the case round my friends and thinking what the hell is that!?

Also Dragon Age, didn't think it would be my kind of game, then one of my friends was playing it loads and it came up reasonably cheap in the steam sale so I got it, even playing it at first I wasn't impressed, then the bit the surprised me was how hooked I suddenly became and even more surprised when I found out how much I had played it

Maybe Lego star wars as well, just the title sounds stupid but I found it a fun to casually play co-op and it also made some use out of my wii

Katamari Demacy, Viva Pinata and Devilish. All of them seem like they would be simplistic and/or horrible... but they aren't!

Kingdom Hearts. I've always been a Square fan but when I first heard about it I thought it was the stupidest idea I'd ever heard. Then I played it, and let me tell you, the amount of hours I racked up that weekend alone was just insane.

Just Cause, it got bad scores and everyone talked about how buggy it was. the game is fun as hell
Man that's the truth. I've been championing this game for a couple years now. It "IS" buggy. As shit in fact, with awful vehicle physics everywhere.

But somehow, against all odds, I love it. I call it the little game that could. Every grappling hook a passing harrier jet and jet jack that fucker out the sky? Shit's intense.

Recently? Uncharted 2. I wasn't expecting it to be so compelling and well paced. After the first one, I had mild expectations, but Uncharted 2 was so completely fun and well paced, not to mention the graphics were the best I've seen this generation.
(I'm not a graphics whore, but I have to note them because they're that good)

Somebody mentioned Portal, I can't agree more. My mate described it as "A puzzle game with a puzzle solving gun and cake".

By God, it doesn't touch pretty much any other game I've played.

Columns for Sega. I always watched my sister play it as a kid and i would chant "THIS IS BORING!". It looked boring in comparison to Golden Axe & Streets of Rage. It was a nice suprise when i fell in love with Columns after my first go.
Eric? Is that you? Or is your name really Stu. I got that game for your sister.

For me the most recent would have to be Batman AA. A good Batman game; amazing.

Also, I really enjoyed gta3 and Vice but I wasn't prepared for how big and awesome San Andreas was going to be. By the same token, I thought Saints Row 2 was just going to be a lame gta clone but it's one of my favorites of this generation so far; way better than gta4.

Stuntman Ignition. I thought it was going to be a boring repetitive racer or something, but it was actually pretty cool. Too bad it was insanely difficult.
