The scariest enemy ever? Wolves from Penumbra: Overture. In most games, even the most terrifying enemy is just another bullet receptacle. In Penumbra, you can't do shit, and that was a truly scary feeling.
Lol, you can easily kill the wolves in Penumbra, you just stand on top of a box and wait for them to run up then you hit them without fear of dying because they can't touch you. At one point I wanted to rush through a level and I timed it right and waited for the wolf and then I beat the hell out of him with a pick-ax.

Although I can't think of any real terrifying one I guess I will have to say the water monster from Amnesia, you can't see it, you can't outrun it, it is loud as hell, it digests human limbs in record timing and you can't fight it at all.

And you run through that shit.

PS: I haven't played it but this looks pretty terrifying.

The damned fish from Super Mario 64 that would just eat you outright... I still cant stand the thought of swimming in open water.
This. But instead of my usual talk of Big Underwater Beasties, I'd add any one-hit-kill enemy like say, the Crocodiles from MGS3.

Oh wait. I guess that counts as an underwater enemy too. It doesn't help that it's probably not too far off from how lethal actual Crocodiles are. Probably the closest thing to dinosaurs left.

I dunno Im split between things in penumbra and amnesia, But I think the most terrifying enemies where in a doom 2 mod call ghouls forest. You had a creeper who would lay like a white puddle floating on the forest floor only to pop up on your screen and startle the fuck out of you, and then there is jitterskull and the rest.

Not sure what the scariest is, but I would say the first time I've really had a feeling of terror from an enemy in a game is the Dopefish from Commander Keen 4. Seriously.
Those fire guys on hard made me panic and fling myself into the sky at the mere sight of them.
I had a nightmare about the Fire Island fire guys once.

Mailbox monsters from Toejam & Earl. Scariest. S***. Ever
For anyone who hasn't played this awesome game basically you could buy stuff from a mailbox however not every mailbox was a mailbox and there was only two ways of telling, sitting around long enough to see the animation (a quick glance of a pair of eyes) or going up to it only for it to sprout arms and turn into a psyhopathic unstoppable killing machine that moved twice as fast as you did. The noise they make as well *shudder*

The hunter was the first thing I thought of. Just the thought that it is stalking you is horrible! And the fact that you can't kill it normally freaks me out big time...

The Librarian from Metro 2033.
This as well, for the same reasons above. They are hard to kill and you are pretty much forced to run, and you can't look back.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and Deathclaws, but that goes without saying.

if you played Ultima 3, you know what I mean.... and the horror this inflicts

on a side note

back in the day, the Pain Elemental from Doom 2

I mean, come on, flying giant heads with arms and horns that spit out flying, horned skulls on fire?

don't tell me the concept isn't scary

or the Doom 64 redesign of the Pinky Demon

I mean, shit, that fucker was intimidating

I used to play Doom in the wee hours of the morning, the sound of demons shuffling about on the other side of the wall is the most unnerving gaming memory I have.
I was too busy thinking, "I hope you like lead poisoning," (yes I did think that to myself) to really feel fear. I used to have a minor fear of Rededs, but that's it. I'm not really afraid of videogames anymore. Maybe that's why I find survival horror dull.

The Darkness from Amnesia. Whenever you see it YOU FREAK THE THE FUCK OUT! Also the water monster from amnesia, I never went in water in that game again because of that thing.

Cazadors.

Fucking Cazadors. I don't think I've yet to survive a scrape with more than four of them at a time. And if I have it probably used up all my flamer fuel. Fucking Cazadors.

In Supreme Commander,if you like to turtle up and tech (like I do,sometimes),then the UEF Mavor is what I fear the most. It's an artillery piece that's monstrously powerful, pinpoint accurate, has a refire rate equivelant to the T3 Artillery Platform (Duke). And,oh,what's this? It has infinite range.

But in a more action-y game, the "Most Terrifying Enemy" award has to go to cavaliers from Heroes of Might and Magic III-V. Why? They can cross the battlefielf in an instant, and gain more attack power for every unit of space they move in between starting motion, and ramming their lance through something.

Or,there's the Pit Lords from HoMM V. They're guaranteed at least one kill per attack due to a special ability. 20 Pit Lords vs 10 Archdevils? Pit Lords win. Hands down.

You were just over four years old when Doom was released.

The character I feared the most (at least as a young kid playing games at night in the dark) had to have been the T-103 (better known as Mr. X) in Resident Evil 2. He wasn't really anything special, but he'd come out of nowhere and all you could think to do was run.

http://images1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20100810182357/residentevil/images/thumb/f/ff/Tyrant_T-103.jpg/257px-Tyrant_T-103.jpg
i was more scared of the tyrant in RE3. I saved all of my big bullets for the tyrant in RE2, but it was annoying the way he crashed through walls. The RE3 tyrant RUNS. And ALWAYS CHASES YOU THROUGH DOORS.
True that. Being chased through doors was something I didn't foresee when I first played RE3, and that did scare the hell out of me.\
So true! Hearing the sound of the Nemesis (not a Tyrant) growling out "Stars" was enough to slow my pace to a crawl. I panicked EVERY time he appeared (until I was a vet at the game), and went blitzing through areas unknown trying to put distance on me and him. o_o
Been there, done that so many times!

That is true. I believe I started playing it when I was five.
