I don't really like motion controls -> they've turned the latest ninty console into a disgrace. Thankfully Sony have had the class to use 'em only when they're needed. I may cry if they're announced for the PC, in some shape or form.

Yes, I would be more interested in the HD consoles if they had motion controls (or in PS3's case.. motion controls that didn't suck). It depends on how they're treated obviously. I actually like the Wiimote/Nunchuck combination for a few reasons:

1. Sometimes flicking my wrist in a direction is simply more visceral and immersive for say sword fighting or flinging out a grappling beam than pushing a button.

2. Pointer controls are dying to be used in FPS games, analog joysticks for aiming is bad bad bad bad bad. I feel sorry for people who think using a gamepad to play a FPS is good. The mouse and keyboard are pretty good systems for it, but actually the pointer functionality of the Wiimote screams superior FPS control. I can't wait for the conduit to really put it to the test. But as it is no input method is more intuitive and fun to use as simply pointing where you want to shoot.

3. Motion controls (while they need some work in their sensitivity and all), allow you to have fewer buttons on a controller but have more functions. The NES had 2 buttons, the SNES had 6, modern controllers have 8 and might have 10 with buttons under the thumbsticks, or 12-14 depending on whether you count the D-pad as 4 extra buttons (often the case) rather than a directional input. The Wiimote if you count it's D-pad as extra buttons (often the case) has 10 buttons and the nunchuck has 2, so 12 buttons but in all honesty, most games only use like 4 buttons, the other buttons are for like pause and menus and maps and stuff rather than combat functions. However with the motion control, you have like an extra 12 buttons worth of functions.. move wiimote left, right, up, down, forward, backward, nunchuck up left right down forward backward. The sensitivity just needs to be tweaked as often it has difficulty determining forward and backward and such. But even minimizing motion control functions to simply up OR down, and left OR right (horizontal movement, vertical movement) is still an extra 4 buttons worth of function. The Tales game for the Wii had an annoying main character but I liked the use of the motion controls in a game that otherwise has no use for motion controls. They use 4 motion control functions as arte shortcuts. This means you can have 12 artes assigned which is pretty awesome.

4. I enjoy the freedom of having my hands separate while playing games rather than both clutching a controller by 2 wings (or 3 in that f'ed up N64 thing..). I use a wireless nunchuck so there's not even a cord. Both hands are free to operate independantly and it actually feels really nice and fun to play games with.

Some games use the motion controls really well, some make it a gimmick. A game like Metroid Prime 3 was a true joy to play and the motion controls and pointer function were used in a way that really added to the game, making it more immersive and fun. Madworld is another game that uses the motion controls well. It makes you forget you're shaking a Wiimote around when you're doing it to smash a guy back and forth on the ground until he dies in an over the top gorefest fashion. It's a joy out of a game I just wouldn't get if I was doing the same thing by mashing A over and over.

I think it's a technology with a lot of promise that just needs to be developed to its full potential.

I would be fine if it was for some games appropriate, like if they had the controller mainly but a select few were motion sensitive, that would have worked wonders, sadly nintendo went from gamecubes "best controller ever" to the new "utter shit controllers"

A lot of the games are compatible with the GCN controller. The Classic controller attachment is actually pretty good as well.

Word...

Also, they're better than the Wii controls.
are you seriously saying that the cheap six axis last minute add on is better than the wiimote in terms of motion controlling? and i thought i was a bit of a fanboy every so often...
So... I'm a fanboy for not sharing your opinion? I'll be sure to remember that... Not.
You're a fanboy for saying something that in your right mind you should know is incorrect. Perhaps some kind of explanation for your statement might curve our perception of you.

EDIT: Not to say that you are a fanboy of course, but the statement could easily colour you as such.
Okay... I HATE the Wii motion controls... That's it, that's my explanation.

Also, I like the Ps3 motion controls. They're used very good in Flower, Ratchet and Clank and Folklore.
So why do you hate the motion controls? They are basically PS3 motion controls but better.

It's sounding like you hate how they are used, but I'm not going to put words into your mouth.

Also, what I said in the last post could be applied here.

Mouse and keyboard for me, best for the majority of games.

I used to have a Wii, but it wasn't the motion controls that were the problem, more the way that games used them. Why should I shake the thing when I could just press one button? Made some games very frustrating. It was only good for the party game aspect.

If the 360 had motion controls like the wii, I wouldn't have bought a 360.

Remember, kids, a fanboy is anyone who prefers a console you don't like! *cheesy PSA logo*

I'm curious what MP3's controls actually are, as I've been trying to figure out an effective set of FPS controls for the Wii. The best idea I've had so far is using the remote to aim on a static screen and having the view rotate and tilt when you aim it at one of the edges of the screen (it could be made to feel fluid and natural, but the "how" is something you'd have to actually start programming and testing to get right). And then joystick to walk.

Motion sensor controllers aren't that useful to be honest, why don't they make more games similar to the Eye toy, That was great fun and the controller was you.

And they suck. You have to fling the controller all over the place for it to register anything and they have to try ridiculously hard to incorporate it into game play, it just isn't worth it.

I whole-heartedly agree. Using 3D motion controls to interact with a 2D doesn't work very well(even if it is trying to simulate 3D).

I hate motion controls. I play games when I'm tired and stressed and I really don't feel like dancing around my house like a dumbass.

Until we have that virtual reality we were all promised in the nineties, controllers or keyboard and mouse will always reign supreme.

So far, motion controls only work well when they're done with sublety. No More Heroes and MadWorld are good examples of this, where they're not the central feature of the game, and yet without them, the game wouldn't feel the same at all. It's only when the motion controls are forced or are made as an afterthought that they become really bad. Lair probably wouldn't have gotten so many bad reviews if it had the option to not use the Six-Axis (I haven't played Lair, but I've read enough reviews of it.) I do think that motion controls can really enhance a game, but developers haven't really gotten on board with them yet, so they still have a ways to go.

I'm not going to explain it any further, because there's nothing more to explain, I just hate the Wii's motion controls. Why is that a problem?

Well you got defensive when someone implied you were a fanboy, then you just enforced the belief by stating that you hate the Wii's motion control for no reason and you prefer the SIXAXIS control for what seems to be no other reason than it's on the PS3.

In a place of discussion like this, me asking to go into detail on why you dislike something isn't uncommon.

P.S. If I said I hate the PS3 and then gave reason, it probably wouldn't make me sound like a fanboy.

If I said I hate the PS3 and then said there's nothing to explain, it would instantly colour me as a fanboy and it would be probably correct.
