So I have a mouse infestation in my house, I'll be honest about it, I've seen them about but because they were little cuties I didn't really do anything... but then I saw a big fucker... he looked at me like he wanted to steal my possessions, not like the little cuties I've seen running around for the past several weeks.

Now I want the big shits removed from my home but I'm a huge pussy pacifist hence I will not resort to using poison to kill them, I merely want them out of my living arrangement.

I've searched the internet and no one states whether poisons actually put said mice in pain or under duress, does anyone here know anything else about rodent poison, does it put a cute little mousy under stress?

I managed to catch one of the little cuties

I did a lunging grab accross my lounge to grab him, I have named him Fenrir and taken him to the woods near my work which is 7 miles away from my property, according to the internet, anything less than 5 miles and Fenrir can find his way "back home" and the "back home" he would consider is my abode.

So escapist, do you know if rodent poison harms (I know it kills, I mean does it hurt them) rodents in anyway? Should I use it?
Have you had a mice infestation before? how did you deal with it?

Electric traps are fairly humane, actually. The little guys crawl in looking for food, and suddenly ZAP, all gone. If you want to be as humane as possible, avoid traps that merely trap. The traditional mouse trap has to hit them in precisely the right way in order to kill them, and mice are smart. They'll figure out how to get the bait off after a few of them wind up wriggling in pain and bleeding out. Sticky traps are also bad because although they're poisoned, it's not a very potent poison, so they're stuck tearing at their fur for quite a while before they ultimately die a very painful death.

The most effective technique is odorless poison in food left laying around. I don't honestly know if it hurts the mice, but it is a trick they can't learn how to overcome (unless they have a Ratatouille thing going on I guess...).

Also... You probably did the least humane thing by taking a mouse out of its habitat... Especially one as young-looking as that one. Little guy has no idea where he is and has no connection to his family. He probably spent a day trying to find his way home and then got eaten by something bigger than him. Just sayin'.

Obviously, I mean come on man, you're part of this forum and don't recognize a RPG starter when you see it?!

As for "Does it put them under Pain / Duress?" All I can find out is that most poisons effect their blood vessels causing them to constrict and spasm. No idea what that says about pain.

By humane what I mean is that I didn't cause it harm through my actions, so me not stamping on it would be seen by my mind as a good thing... and taking it away from my home would also be a good thing.

But now I'm being told its not
:(

It's a noble gesture and I'm not berating your actions. To be perfectly honest, I really don't care about the feelings of a mouse. I'd just kill it in a non-sadistic way and get rid of it. Buuuut, if you do want to be nice to him, releasing him into the wild when his "home" is your home really doesn't help.

I personally think the cat idea that Kendarik mentioned is great. You'll need to get ready for the cat to bring you plenty of presents and you'll probably have to buy some cleaning products that work on blood, but other than that... It's organic, natural, and you get a cat out of it. I call that a win!

Daystar was right! Giant rats - you're in RPG. Try killing them one by one. If you don't level up, then just get a giant exclamation mark and hang outside until you find a hero.

The most common mouse poison is designed to dehydrate them to death. It's done this way because otherwise the dead mouse bodies would get rather smelly as they rot. If you find these bodies, they look like mummies. In theory they at some point just fall asleep and die, but I wouldn't count on zero discomfort.
Now, I can say from experience of having to go to the hospital for dehydration twice (apparently I'm just predisposed to hydration sensitivity) that, considering that you're trying to deadify them, dehydration prolly wouldn't be the worst way to go. In fact, you can even get some nifty hallucinations from the experience. Mine were boring, though. :/

Still, the best thing you can do right now is to get rid of where they're coming from. Block all possible holes and entrances.

Still, I can empathise to a degree; my studio space has mice and they try to chew through my food's tupperware!

Psh.
That's not a rat. Obviously, its a pygmy bear. In this case, you should submit to its will immediately! Tiny bears are psychic, you know!

Poison will indeed hurt them (it's rather unpleasant, so I'm not gonna go into details). Aside from that, they'll go somewhere isolated to die - probably somewhere you can't get to, so they'll really smell after a few days.

I'd use the humane traps, but if you have no problems with killing them then use an old mechanical traps. They're quick and don't make too much of a mess.

Make those falling cage traps with cheese to lure them in? Like in the cartoons?

That or just find the holes they're using, and get your catchers mit. Then start catching those home runs mice!

I would really like to think of this as an escalation from a previous thread about there being one mouse in a kitchen. Even if it's not, I'd like to think of it being that way.

My personal suggestion is that you seal off the kitchen and fast for a week.

I reported it as you went off topic on your own thread, t'was just having a joke. I awaited my cruel and inevitable ban as some mods (not talking about any website or user in particular) that I've seen over the years can't take the slightest jokes and I wasn't sure how that would go over.

I am currently in the process of making a Mouse Trap type concoction in my kitchen, when various jumps for the mouse to make before landing into a bucket lined with foam... I think I'm doing well in my mouse infestation problem

Ha-ha, everybody knows hammers don't use ammunition! They work on batteries. Or maybe the hammer is just dull. And check the flux capacitor.

Aha! My Hammer is like a lame version of the Gunblade! Whenever I hit something with it, a bullet shoots out to finish the job :D

good luck with that, those little buggers need a hole 1cm by 1cm to crawl through. They are real escape artists.

As for glue/sticky traps those are the least humane thing to do as noted by someone else. The store i worked had a mouse problem and used those things. I had to clean up a few of those while the mice were not dead yet.

Seeing as they need a small hole to get inside it might be really difficult to find their point of entry. A cat is a nice idea but a lot of domesticated cats do not chase nor care about mice.

Poison or buy some really humane traps (those that only catch them so you can set them free later.

Also i hope it isn't a mouse like in mousehunt if so you are really screwed :p

edit : how the heck did i get that movie title wrong ... i need sleep

If we're talking mouse traps, here's a quick humane version: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/how-to-build-a-diy-humane-mous-51742

All I had to do was to put it beside the wall because in my studio, the walls are made of things they can climb on.
Which makes mice all the more horrifying, because that means they can be anywhere.

And there is your problem. Use a shotgun instead - way better. Or even better - a rocket launcher.

But to sidestep the ammo problem, add a button that hits your target with another hammer. There - no problem with ammo running out. Unless the batteries die.
