Make those falling cage traps with cheese to lure them in? Like in the cartoons?

That or just find the holes they're using, and get your catchers mit. Then start catching those home runs mice!
Whats wrong with you? Don't you know that you don't use catchers mitts catch fly balls. Sushi, you're going to need an outfielders mitt.

OT: That really sucks. I can't really offer any advice as I've never had to deal with mice (we've had them, but I never had anything to do with killing them), but were it me, I wouldn't worry too much about being humane, they are disease carrying vermin, and should be exterminated by whatever means necessary.

I would like to note that this post was written by someone who is absolutely terrified of mice/rats (oddly enough, not shrews) and wishes to see them all wiped from the face of the earth.

When I had Mice in the past I caught them in those (less inhumane) live traps and released them outside, got a few of those ultrasonic plug devices (which apparently turn all of your house's wiring into an impenetrable ultrasonic barrier, but that might annoy your dog) and probably most importantly, I stopped leaving out food for them.

I know releasing them at the end of my garden isn't effective in making them disappear, but it's a good way of dealing with them in the short term.

I'm not certain which was most effective, the ultrasonic plug devices or the fact I no longer collect my vegetable cuttings and compost bits in a bin in the kitchen before putting them outside, but since I plugged in those devices and cut out a stage in my compost routine I haven't had any Mice (or signs of Mice) in my house.

I live in the country so they're unavoidable and I frequently see them in the compost bin in our garden when I put stuff in it, but I haven't had any in the house for a long time.

At my workplace I've seen "sonic emitters" (something like that) that put out an ultrasound wave to repel rodents but it didn't kill them, maybe try that?

We used poison but I've seen the emitters on the shelves, that may indicate their quality, I'm not sure.
I found sonic emitters to be useless, I tried one and found a mouse sitting right next to it when I got home. I swear it looked at me as to say "***** please" before darting off to hide. Got to give him points for ballisness but he still fell for the old poisoned food trick so I won.
