Before anything, watch Shawshank Redemption. The best movie ever made right there. As far as everything else (yeah, Shawshank is in a separate category from everything else), it really does depend on what you're into before anyone can really recommend something.

Pulp Fiction, Fight Club, Reservoir Dogs. Jackie Brown if you prefer more of a storyline than violence... Yes I am a Quentin Tarantino fan. But if you're in a more mellow mood and want to watch something with an amazing story and actually nearly (NEARLY) made me cry. Try The Green Mile and (already mentioned above) Shawshank Redemption. Well, these are all my taste, but everyone I know loves Shawshank Redemption.

EDIT: Ooh yeah and Lock, Stock & Two Smoking Barrels, I was obsessed with that film when I first saw it.

Clerks - the first time I saw this was on MTV and I was blown away by it. Before the word MTV here scares you off, it's the exact opposite of anything you'd expect on MTV. Clerks 2 on the other hand, would fit the channel.

The Good, The Bad and the Ugly - Classic in every way possible. It was a theaters here a few months ago, went and saw it. One of the best things I've seen in theaters, and that includes Lord of the Rings.

The Shawshank Redemption - If you:
A) Do not like this movie
B) Haven't see it
You're dead to me.

Tampopo - Japanese movie about ramen. Hilarious, well written and loveable characters. Doesn't go too far over the top like most Japanese movies do at one point or another.

The Incredibles - The best CGI movie since Shrek, in my opinion nothing has come close to how fun this movie is in a long time.

Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels - Can't really say much about it, besides the fact that it's great. If you've seen Snatch, it's like it but it has a bit more character I find.

Dogville - Not that well known. It's filmed on a stage and takes place in a town. There's lines on the floor to show where the houses are and people act as if they're really in a town, opening doors, moving things out of the way, even though there's nothing there.
It's a really dark and depressing movie though.
This is the town, in case anyone is wondering:

I also recommend Shawshank Redemption. Also check out American History X, Pulp Fiction, Clerks and the Rocky films. It would help if we knew what you were into mind.

Any Kevin Smith film (excluding Jersy Girl, but not to bad if you wanna see Liv Tyler wet in her slightly see-through bra). Tank Girl, because of the sheer madness of the film, i.e. the kangeroo-dog-man thing lol.

The Quest for the Holy Grail, Life of Brian, and the Meaning of Life. Particularly the first two. Why? In two words: Monty. Python. They're funny as hell, without treating the audience like they're stupid. You can watch their stuff over and over and you'll still laugh your ass off. Pure genious.

The Tower of Death. The definition of "so bad, it's good". Again, you can watch it over and over and you'll still laugh your ass off. And the fact that it wasn't meant as a comedy only makes it funnier.

Yeah, I like comedies and bad Hong Kong movies... Why are you looking at me like that? ;-)

The Mothman Prophecies, the book is better, but the movie is still really good. Also, I've always been partial to the original Dawn of the Dead.
