Before anything, watch Shawshank Redemption. The best movie ever made right there. As far as everything else (yeah, Shawshank is in a separate category from everything else), it really does depend on what you're into before anyone can really recommend something.
The Shawshank Redemption was so horribly inaccurate.

Inaccurate? You mean the movie inaccurately portrayed the book? Or what?

If that's what you mean, it doesn't really make a difference, to be honest with you. I've never read the book. All I know is it's an amazing movie.

Erm. I was thinking of a different movie. For some reason, my brain was retarded and made The Last Samurai the Shawshank Redemption.

S.R. was good. The Last Samurai was not. My mistake.

Well, I enjoyed Army of Darkness, John Carpenter's The Thing, Scarface, Fight Club, Dune (David Lynch-version), uhm...
Army of Darkness is a cult classic horror/comedy. You might also enjoy Evil Dead 2, the direct predecessor. Both extremely B-movie-ish.
The Thing is just great. Paranoia, snow, aliens. Very nice.
Scarface, do I really have to say anything about that movie?
Fight Club, nice little anarchic mind-boggery, if you have a slightly chaotic snese of humour, you'll enjoy it even more.
Dune, well, it's a cult-classic sci-fi flick based on the books. Of the two versions available, it's definitely the better one even though the Harkonnens are depicted a bit weird...

Oh. Carry on then ;)

I'd also like to add Let The Right One In to this list. I watched it for the first time tonight, and it was flawless. Easily one of my favorites.

STAY AWAY FROM SHAWSHANK REDEMPTION!!! It is borderline unwatchable, I have tried several times to watch it, but can't. I guess that would make it just unwatchable instead, sorry for the confusion.

Anything by the Coen Brother is amazing.
Burn After Reading
No Country For Old Men
Big Lebowski
Raising Arizona
etc...

Quentin Tarantino is also a never miss.
Death Proof
Kill Bill Vol. 1 ampersand 2
Jackie Brown
Pulp Fiction
Reservoir Dogs
