Why in Chuck Norris's name would someone move their console while playing the game? I just don't see why. Do people get bored while playing the game and decide they need to change the decor of the room? You don't move a DVD player in the middle of watching a movie, why would a game console be any different?

Common sense failure, really.

Yeah, I kinda thought it was just common knowledge to not move any game system while a disc is spinning. You would thing common sense would intercede in this situation.

Why would you be moving it while you're playing it anyway? Seems a bit stupid to me.
Call me crazy, but I think you might be onto something here. Who honestly decides, while playing a game, that they don't like the positioning of their Xbox? Seriously, move it when its turned off. No need to be messing around with it while its on.

yeah you could never move the xbox while the disc was spinning you can however move the ps3 while in use, the difference is the xbox is tray loading system while the ps3 is slot loader like in a car stereo.

Disks are outdated anyway, I'm not clear on why industry keeps pushing this technology.

I mean, they may have fixed the Red Ring of Death issue, but isn't this worse?
However, I suppose most people don't really move their 360s whilst it's playing a disk.
If you had said this upon the First 360 release, you'd be right. As it happens, moving the machine with a disc in on the original Xbox destroyed the disc as well.

The only really fool-proof disc mounting option is the old-school caddy system. I kind of miss them, despite the impracticality.

Didn't the PSP use a similar system? I think we should earnestly consider re-implementing this technology into consoles, if only to protect people from their own stupidity. As I noted a page or two ago, common sense does not seem to be something to be relied on anymore.
The problem with re-implementing the caddy system seems to stem from the speed that modern drives spin the disc. A disc inside a caddy spinning at 32x (or more) likely builds up a lot of heat from friction, which can reduce drive lifespan. I'm sure it could be re-engineered to work at faster speeds, but it really just doesn't make a whole lot of sense for data disc drives, as they are rarely required to operate while in motion.

The last system to use a caddy-like system in regular practice (to the best of my recollection) was the MiniDisc. It failed because MP3 came to the audio market, just as discs as a whole will eventually fail whenever direct downloads take over the data market.

its because of things like this that make it hard for me to see how Xbox can have fanboys, then again PS3 and Wii aren't exactly perfect either so really how do fanboys even exist? Oh who am I kidding I love fangoys there rabid loyalty provides so much entertainment.

Ok if it's off wtf. But if it's on, why THE HELL would you move your 360 during playing it.

I don't see that as a dumb thing though. Of course moving the console while the disk is spinning is stupid. It'll cause a risk of damage on ANY console like that.

If you move the console while the disc is spinning, you're an idiot and you deserve what you get.

Well, der dur fuckin' der!

I thought this was a rule of thumb or something?
Oh well.... I guess The Escapist should get the word out there for the less "console educated."

I had my x-box fall like 2 feet once with a disk moving inside of it and the disk still works.

So this means I still can't go waltzing with my Xbox 360? I feel betrayed by Microsoft.

I usually don't move any of my devices by default when they are one.

Moving the New 360 Can Damage Disks

If you've going to buy one of the new Xbox 360s, be careful how you handle it.

There's no other way to say this: Don't move your new slim Xbox 360 while the disk is spinning, as it might just destroy the disk. Nick Chester, the editor-in-chief of Destructoid discovered that moving the console while it's reading a disk continues to be a very bad idea, much as it was with its older, chunkier sibling.

Chester moved the machine from a horizontal to a vertical position while a copy of Alan Wake was being read. After an ungodly noise, the disk was rendered unusable and an annoyed Microsoft employee directed Chester's attention to a sticker on the front of the console which made a point of saying not to move the machine while it was on.

Whether you think this is an unacceptable design flaw, or a consequence of using the device improperly depends on your point of view. Personally, I think that moving the machine while the disk is moving at its quickest is just asking for trouble, but that's just my opinion. Regardless, it shows that being careful with your consoles is a good idea.

Moving the OLD 360 damages disks.

This is not anything new.

BTW - Moving ANY spinning disk within an optical drive could likely damage it.

7200 RPM... and you are going to move it; Physics has a concept called "Centrifugal Force" anything that touches that disk at those speeds... I would call any idea of moving it while its on, ill conceived.

Are you also going to break a window and invade a house belonging to a couple having sex , throwing the male to the floor just to see how he responds to it and if its an improvement from the LAST FRIGGIN TIME you did it to him?
