You will be fine. As long as you don't act like an idiot eg. picking up snakes you should be safe.
Where are you going by the way?
I am going to Melbourne first then travelling up the coast as far as Brisbane then I'm heading right into the middle of no where to an opal mine where 6 friends of mine from college are working (they have degrees in Software Development but are working in a mine for a year, go figure)

I'll be in Aus for almost 3 weeks. I have been horrifically worried about the spiders, if I spaz out when I see the tiny ones Ireland has I will pass out at the large ones ye've been posting here =/ Snakes I'm fine with oddly enough.

The spiders aren't really that bad. I have only been bitten once and that was by a garden spider. Just don't pick them up.

I'm moving to Melbourne Australia to live there for 6 months because of my mom's work
Is there anything i should know about living in Australia?
(I currently live in the United States)
Just that it's AWESOME!!!
But really, the stereotype of Australians is completely wrong (as most are) and if you go around thinking we ride kangaroos and say "g'day mate" then people will get offended.
Oh, and it's very hard to plan for the weather.

I'll elaborate a bit on these.
-College starts at 11th grade and then University after 12th
That 'Colledge' is called TAFE, you can start it whenever.
Um, what? No. Year 11 and 12 are called College here. TAFE is something completely different.

Yeah I live in Melb. Best city.
You'll be fine, the CBD is the best part of the city really. The inner suburbs taking 2nd place. And then the forest-y far outer suburbs taking 3rd. With last place being suburbia. Don't go there.
We use metric, and centigrade... yr 12 is the final year of High School, and yeah... most Australians hate American accents.
Melbourne is pronounced Melbun and there is a slight r in there, but nobody cares if it isn't.
Whattt elllllse? Melbourne's night life is awesome, and is probably one of the most culturally active Australian cities.

yeah, that's about it. You can't go wrong unless you pick a fight with a bogan or start displaying your American pride too much, we Aussies don't fly flags in our backyards.
Really, it's a great place to be, hope you enjoy it as much as I do living here.

EDIT: Oh and Melbourne's weather is famous for being skits. It might look sunny, but then it'll start pouring. Or we might have a sudden hot streak where it hurts to walk outdoors from the heat radiating off the sidewalk.

What! This is madness, I have never heard of year 11 and 12 refered to as colledge and I'm in year 12.

First of all it's college. See oh double ell ee jee ee.

And it may be a locational thing. I live in the ACT and we have a few year 11-12 only schools, and they're all called colleges. So for me, college = 11-12. Where are you from, may I ask?

It's fine. I live in Melbourne and it's great as long as you don't mind the weather changing every five minutes. Hate to perpetuate a stereotype about Americans and guns but firearms are very controlled here so if you own any don't even bother trying to get them in. Nice enough place, except we get foxes in the night and that's suburbia 45 minutes from the city. You won't see any iconic australian animals in suburban melbourne or the city outside of a zoo obvously, but we do get people asking where all the kangaroos and koalas are. Breaks my heart. Watch out for those by the way, make a kangaroo feel threatened and they can use there claws to tear your guts out, and they will too. Koalas are rare to get close to but the vicious buggers will claw you without a second thought, oh and although you won't see many in the wild, AVOID THE BLOODY CROCODILES. Granted you'd need to go a fair ways out to meet one but camping by a river'll make you an easy meal, and they can out run a horse over 100m. And they hunger for FLESH.

Enjoy Australia! =)

It is winter here currently.
Also there is a twelve hour time difference, there are a lot of poisonous animals, never under any circumstances go swimming in any rivers in the Northern Territory, 'Burger King' is called 'Hungry Jacks', everything costs less and quite a few movies have yet to be released in this country.
Also, we absolutely hate it when Americans say 'G'Day mate'. We haven't said that in god only knows how many years.

Other than that, have fun and if you are ever in Perth give me your number, I'm always up for meeting another Veteran of the Escapist.
