I'll look for you in the obituaries.
Damn, beat me to it.

But anyway, yeah. Everything in Australia has evolved to kill everything else in Australia.
The waters around Australia have deadly Jellyfish and sharks. The deserts have deadly snakes and insects. The forests also have deadly snakes and insect. The outback has deadly heat animals. And the rivers have deadly crocodiles(or alligators, not sure which one. Maybe both).

So yeah, be careful.

Also, they have giant spiders. That hunt birds.

Heard the people are nice though.
So yeah, have fun!

Dont listen to half these people

1. The wildlife will not attack you unless provoked
2. Don't talk about "Back in 'merica" people will hate you for it
3. Don't tip anyone
4. If you dont know your cars you will die
5. Melbourne is not pronouce melBORN its melbn
6. Avoid anyone/anything that has the southern cross on it, you will get stabbed
7. We arent as much of a nanny state as anyone makes out
8. You get LOTS of games over here (only a dozen or so have been "banned"
9. If people start giving you shit for being an american, dont take it to heart we are just screwing with ya, insult us back.
10. Metric is EASY to learn and it makes perfect sense, unlike Imperial
11. Vegemite is brilliant. (Also, we call if Peanut Butter and Jam not PB&J)
12. The Mana Bar is in BRISBANE in a different state so unless you're 18 and want to go to a different state, bas luck
13. Bogans are a bigger threat than the animals

Basically, common sense/not being a jackass will keep you safe.

Half you people really need to stop stereotyping...that is unless you want us to start stereotyping your country in which case, go ahead, just dont cry when we do it.

TURN BACK WHILE YOU CAN!!!

Nar, Melbourne's a pretty good place. It also holds a HUGE Anime convention also, I think later on in the year (and one on the 20-22nd AUG). It's alot better then Newcastle and if Labyrinth hosts another Aussie get-to-gether, you can train up to Sydney to hang with us. Don't worry, we wont bite. :3
Hey! I was just coming in to say that! I'm trying to get the group, Aussie Escapists to organize a meet-up for Manifest (the Aug anime con Ziadaine mentioned). Are you and Labyrinth from there or a different group, maybe a Sydney specific group? I'm a Melbourne based nerd but I have a few friends up in Sydney I'd love to visit soon, hopefully during a con of some sort so I wouldn't mind getting to know a few more of you!

But to OT, Melbourne is a really great place. Depending where you're living there is quite a few nerdy stores! Minotaur, in the CBD (take a train to Flinders Street), is a great nerdy pop culture (anime, manga, comics, figurines etc) store. Also in the CBD is Comics R Us, Classic Comics, Dungeon Crawl (a video game store), Good Games (CCG's and RPG's, the store also holds competitions and lets people pretty much come in and play whatever they like. They also sell snacks which is awesome during an epic RPG/CCG night!) and a lot of EB Games stores and some various CCG/RPG stores I can't remember the name of right now.

In Chapel Street, Prahran there is Alternative Worlds, also a pop culture store that sells anime, manga, comics, CCG's, RPG's and they hold CCG nights for some CCGs such as L5R and others. There is also a Comics R Us there a few doors down from Alternative Worlds.

In Geelong, there is also a Good Games, there are a few some other places too and I think there is one in Sydney too but I don't remember where exactly.

Ringwood also has a Comics R Us but it is quite small. Ian, the guy who runs it is a fairly nice guy though! In the Ringwood plaza/mall there is a few game stores. An EB, Gamestop and I think a Gamestore, some name like that. They have some good vitage/older games there. I found my copy of Kingdom Hearts and Age of Mythology there. :D

If you need any more info or want someone to show you around feel free to PM me! :D Enjoy your time in Melbourne! :)

All I can say is...I may have seen you before because I often frequent those exact stores in those exact locations.
Also that Ian guy is really friendly, the other games store is called GAME and no matter how many times I try I seem completely unable to find Good Games in the city. :/

This is completely off topic, I know, it just surprised me.
Just a heads-up, I'm pretty sure Australia doesn't have Gamestop here, so it's likely he's confusing the Gamestop with GAME. The other one he couldn't remember the name of is called GameTraders, because they usually have a pretty awesome collection of vintage games. I don't go to Ringwood often, but I sometimes drop in there on the way back from Uni. If you're on the lookout for vintage games, you can also check out Cash Converters. They're more general in that you just trade anything you want there for money, and Cashies just sells them off themselves, but they usually have a pretty good section dedicated to games. I found Rayman on PS1 there for AU$5. Bargain.

... OK. dammit. That does it. Keep that hellhole, I'm staying here on the opposite side of the planet :)
Actually to clarify, platypuses are rare but the males are poisonous, and cane-toads and a lot of tropical frogs are poisonous.

But to be fair, there are two kinds of spider that are harmless, the Daddy Long-Legs (small black body with long thin spindly legs) and the Huntsman, (large brown/grey furry boddy with long furry legs). Both are common in houses and harmless.

EB Games here is actually a subsidiary of GameStop.

EDIT: My bad, double post.

Watch out for wild Yahtzees, they know Rock Tomb and if you try to catch them they'll immediately pop out and comment on how atrocious your attempt was.

Huh, so it is. Well, guess there's not much point in having both here, is there? At any rate, I've never seen nor heard of there being an actual Gamestop here, so until someone proves to me otherwise, we only have EB Games.

#1, speed limits are pathetic, its like they expect slow crawling babys on the road.
#2, Really, the speed limits and anything else the government has power over are laughable
#3, these limits are in fact, so ridiculous that teenagers ignore them entirely and get themselves killed
#4, please don't assume that ANYONE will have an accent, especially in melbourne, its the most multicultural city in the world, we do not sound like a crocodile dundee movie, I say mate about once a year, and I NEVER EVER say g'day. If you say mate in a dumb accent everyone will know.
#5 american accents are generally agreed on by internet voting lists as the most annoying, if you sound like a redneck or rural american, people will think its funnyer than a new zealand accent (See "Beached")
#6 a wombat might be cute, but it can run surprisingly fast, can walk away after being in substantial collisions with a car, its claws can dig through hard dirt and its teeth can easily rip through flesh. one almost ripped the balls of a guy who stopped to take a picture, instead he just lost a chunck of flesh from his leg. They are more dangerous than a kangaroo when angered, so basically dont get near anything alive unless you know exactly what it is.
#7 we have places with annoying barely pronouncable aboriginal names, i find them insufferable, they all sound like digeridoo to me. You will have to get used to it, cause uluru aint going back to ayres rock anytime soon.

Too much censorship, poor internet and limited release on movies, games, etc.
lolwut? I'll give you the internet one but on the rest of that.... lolwut?
Every time Yahtzee EVER mentions himself living in Australia, he complains about games getting incredibly delayed release with ridiculously extortionate prices. Regionally it's just in a bad position.

And Australia seems to be pretty keen on censorship, it's like the UK was in the 1970's.

I'd go on holiday there but I wouldn't buy any creative works there. I would consider it an insult to personal liberty and literary freedom.

When you're in Australia, use the words 'root' and 'fanny' with great care. They may not mean the same things that you're used to. ;-)

Melbourne is okay ... I prefer Sydney. A little more down to Earth and more migrants. If you can afford it see if you can relocate to Sydney whilst your mum is working in Melbourne. That being said the primary thing you have to worry about is economics.

Pick the right time to change your savings into AUD. Despite Australia's currency belonging to the 'Big Five' traded money of the world (AUD, USD, Euro, Pound, Yen) it has the largest swings and is very dynamic. Depending on the amount you wish to change into hard cash you could lose thousands if you wait for a major interest rate hike to drive the dollar higher prior to exchange.

As for animals and ecology Australia isn't as dangerous as people mae it out to be. Particularly on the Eastern coastline where 90% of the Australian populace (ohf which house the densely populated cities of Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane amongst other population clusters) hug for dear life due to it being the most hospitable terrain and environment for civil development.

You won't find animals jumping through your windows or waking up with snakes in your bed unless you go camping out in the countryside. That being said try to check your bed every now and again for spiders.
