I watched the UK version and it was pretty good - great acting anyway - but "realistic"? Not where I come from, anyway. Jesus, if the way those kids acted was in any way representative of the general teen population society would crumble in about 2 generations.
Come to edinburgh then, apart from the more dramatic plot points (the season one finale, cassies character ect) the drink, sex and drugs are all par for the course up here among some of my friends.

Well at least at my former school.
that's really creepy, then. or maybe I was just too naive in high school to notice all this supposed debauchery going on, but it's enough to make me want to home-school my kid if that's the case.

so gross.
Not really, as long as your kids know drunkeness is for losers and being caght with weed means they could go to prison (and you set a good example) then it's fine.

Drink and drugs are a part of life and your hypothetical kids would have encountered them any way... It's better to be imfromed rather than sheltered.

Plus it is the home schooled kids who are the crazyest....... fyi

lol, well I know a family of homeschooled peeps and they're all pretty well-adjusted...they weren't sheltered, they were involved in many many team sports and activities so they were exposed to tons outside people, just not forced into the bullcrap school system that's relatively useless at this point anyway. Now one is a lawyer, one is a dentist, one is getting their phD, one is a midwife and one is...well, he went to Japan to teach and just never came back.

My kid isn't hypothetical, he's 3 and I've been a stay-at-home mom the whole time and the only difference I see in him compared to other kids his age who went into daycare and preschool is that he's about a thousand times more well-behaved and even-tempered. This could just be his personality but who knows?

The REAL reason I've seriously considered homeschooling is because I know for a faact the school curriculum is outdated, archaic and generally counter-intuitive when it comes to actual real life preparedness. I feel like my child is more likely to be exposed to the kinds of things we're discussing here than actual education, but I plan to enroll him in j/k and see how it goes...

Sorry, i thought we were talking hypothticly XD

Personally i feel while highschool for me wasn't all fun times and rainbows it helped prepare me for life which will also not just be fun times and rainbows. While there was alot of crazy stuff going on in my school (like in skins) it personally helped me figure out how the resposible amounts for drinking and make imformed choices.

The only people i know who are home schooled are the super sheltered ones, who either are super uptight or a bit off the rails for a while XD But from what you said it seems like i just had a bad experience.

As for the education thing, meh depends on what school you go to. Mine had a good mix of amazing and bad which helped me deal with bad teachers in uni (bad teachers are everywhere).

But skins is a really good show btw, well at least the uk one. The fact that alot of s*** happens to them because of their lifestyle is true to life so it stops it from outrighly glamorising that kind of culture.

What the fuck is "Skins"?

*American remake of British television show* - oh thats promising...
*Aired on MTV* - not winning me over...
*drama showing the lives of teenagers, but more "real" then other shows that claim to do the exact same thing* - They really don't want me to watch this show.

And after looking it up some more, what kind of parent would let their kids watch it?!
When you say "American remake of British television show* - oh thats promising..." Are you implying anything from Britain is bad, or are you saying remakes are bad?

I was talking about it being a British-to-American remake.

When are people going to forget the things they "aren't supposed to like" and look at things for their actual merit.

You may not have liked skins, but it was far from "shit".

OT: America's strictness regarding sexual matters is borderline ridiculous, but i have no doubt MTV would make any and all sexual relations exploitative and deranged.

Ahh ok, i agree, foreign remakes are rarely good, although i heard the US version of "the office" is pretty good.

Also i've seen basically evey episode of Skins and I don't exactly feel like I should go out and take hard drugs at all, if anything it's discouraged me.

And I think the PTC does not understand that there is a difference between children and teens.
I don't think the PTC understands that there's a difference between children and adults, frankly. Although, there probably isn't much of a difference in the kind of circles they travel in.

I can't help but feel like this is part of why our attitude towards sex in general hasn't matured. Americans consider sex to be deranged and exploitative because that's how it's portrayed in like 90% of the media. And teens are of course turned on by anything that seems edgy and dangerous, so the media panders to that demand. It's a vicious cycle.

"Ladies and Gentlemen! Welcome to the disclaimer! That's right, the disclaimer. This American apple pie institution known as the 'Parental Discretion' will cleanse any sense of innuendo or sarcasam from the lyrics, wich would actually make you think and will also insult your intelligence at the same time! So, protect your family! This album contains extreeme depictions of things that are real! These real things are commonly known as 'Life'! So if it sounds sarcastic, don't take it seriously! If it sounds dangerous, do not try this at home or at all! And if it offends you, just don't listen to it."

We are saying the same exact thing. The media portrays sexuality poorly in America because of America's strictness towards sex. That is why MTV would bastardize these sexual interactions.

"Skins" was horrid to begin with. One of the few things on BBC America I won't watch.
This, only with the added mention that I feel MTV should not censor the show. If you do, the integrity is lost. But again, Skins was terrible, and this is an American remake on MTV so i can't see it being any good either.

On a somewhat related note, I have plans to brutally murder everyone involved in "American Top Gear"
who's with me?

AS a teenager, I have no problem seeing other naked teenagers.
I do have a problem with bad t.v shows though.
