In an age where everything released on console apparently needs a multiplayer, im wandering why we havent seen any multiplayer rpg's surfacing. And no, im no reffering to the MMORPG clusterfuck that is beginning to resemble the fps boom on consoles (which sucks, it's a potentially brilliant way to game with people), im reffering to the likes off dragon age, mass effect, elderscrolls and the like. I played through most of mass effect wandering what having a squad mate as another person would be like (fun but hillariousaly easy was my conclusion).

You see, I think that the afformentioned games could genuinely benefit from a, and I stress this, WELL THOUGHT OUT multiplayer that is not nescesary to the experiance but can enhance it. RPG's are all about the story after all, we cant be having a multiplayer game with a campaighn mode, and thus it would make sense to have a drop in/out system like fable 3 actually had.

Actually fable3 is a good example, having players able to share the experience. It is just unfortunate that you are restricted to the same zones and that the characeters are very samey (Due more to the games story as opposed to poor gameplay mechanics).

What I think would be brill would be an open ended fallout/elderscrolls game with the ability to invite friends in like in fable, and a saints row-esque "Keep what your fdriend did to your world or leave it" save game. That way, friends could quest it up with or without you, and so long as your aware of what they did it could be very rewarding. Yes, it would be a ballancing nightmare, but game devs do seem to have veritible doom fortresses for studios these days that must surely contain someone they could spare for ballancing (loot/npc scaling ets)

One word comes to mind, Diablo. Just wait til diablo 3 comes out, it will be godlike.

Stuff to keep oneself occupied in the same manor = Diablo 2 pretty uniques still character development wise, Titan quest, Darkfall, Dungeon Siege 2, Sacred 2.

All pretty much made for multiplayer. No i haven't played all of them.

Not entirely serious, maybe.

I am also interested in this topic. My friends and I are always on the lookout for coop games to play together. For a few weeks, we've been looking for coop RPG's to play.

We've played the hell out of Diablo 2. We're currently playing Titan Quest (Still haven't finished the main quest line. Goddamn that game is long.) And we're also trying to get the multiplayer for Baldur's Gate 2 to work, so far that's been an unsuccessful nightmare.

I'm actually thinking about trying Neverwinter Nights 2 with my friends. I never had the chance to beat it, and while it's not BG2, it's "close enough". Then again, I dunno if NWN2's multiplayer is as much of a pain as BG2's is.

IT WONT WORK!

The reason why is this: Those games are heavily story dependent. There are some cutscenes and a mountain of dialogue. I dont know about you, but I would not want to play an emotional part in some RPG while my comrade was teabagging a dead npc or yelling ARE WE THERE YET? in my headset.

Coop games are fun as all hell, but it will be nigh impossible for them to keep two (or more) players equally transfixed every time something happens. And every time they fail this, immersion will be broken and the gaming experience will be that much worse.

No thanks to this, I prefer my deep gaming experiences to be undisturbed.

Because sitting there doing nothing while you have an hour's worth of dialog and non-combat side quests in the Citadel is not what I would call engaging multiplayer.

RPGs stopped having multiplayer about the same time as they started having plots.
