In an age where everything released on console apparently needs a multiplayer, im wandering why we havent seen any multiplayer rpg's surfacing. And no, im no reffering to the MMORPG clusterfuck that is beginning to resemble the fps boom on consoles (which sucks, it's a potentially brilliant way to game with people), im reffering to the likes off dragon age, mass effect, elderscrolls and the like. I played through most of mass effect wandering what having a squad mate as another person would be like (fun but hillariousaly easy was my conclusion).
You see, I think that the afformentioned games could genuinely benefit from a, and I stress this, WELL THOUGHT OUT multiplayer that is not nescesary to the experiance but can enhance it. RPG's are all about the story after all, we cant be having a multiplayer game with a campaighn mode, and thus it would make sense to have a drop in/out system like fable 3 actually had.
Actually fable3 is a good example, having players able to share the experience. It is just unfortunate that you are restricted to the same zones and that the characeters are very samey (Due more to the games story as opposed to poor gameplay mechanics).
What I think would be brill would be an open ended fallout/elderscrolls game with the ability to invite friends in like in fable, and a saints row-esque "Keep what your fdriend did to your world or leave it" save game. That way, friends could quest it up with or without you, and so long as your aware of what they did it could be very rewarding. Yes, it would be a ballancing nightmare, but game devs do seem to have veritible doom fortresses for studios these days that must surely contain someone they could spare for ballancing (loot/npc scaling ets)
