What I mean by this is, the first song you heard from a band. Did the first song stay with you, is it your favourite of the band's music, do you even remember the song that got you into the band?

Some of mine:
This is the first Opeth song I heard, and this is the shortened version (the longer version is over 10 minutes long) It stayed with me and has remained as my favourite Opeth song to this very day.

Very first Disturbed song I heard, one of my favourites to this day.

The vocalist is Corey Taylor, the vocalist of Slipknot (which of what I have seen, many of you do not like) in his other band, Stone Sour. I'm in awe of his vocal talent, really.

My cousin introduced me to AiC, and I loved them from the moment I heard this song.

Introduced to me by my friend in the UK, they made me expand my tastes quite a bit in "older" metal.

And now for something that just doesn't fit with what I have posted so far:

The very same friend in the UK introduced me to The Prodigy, it was this song I heard first. I fell in love.

Now, you can post yours. YouTube videos encouraged, guys!

Note: sorry for all the videos, I'm trying to make it so you can easily hear what I first heard of a band.

The first song I heard by Coheed and Cambria was A Favor House Atlantic.

I immediately fell in love with the band because of how catchy the song was.

I'll leave you to find a youtube video of it seeing as they have blocked embedding on each and every video of it.

I can't remember if this was the first song I heard from Shihad, it probably wasn't but I remember seeing the music video for this, (it's like sped up with a Polaroid developing in the corner, it's on YouTube somewhere but the live version of this song is 100x better.) For some reason the video stuck with me and seeing it again about a decade later just immediately clicked that the music video I liked as a kid which I could barely remember was the NZ classic Home Again from the band that I'm still a big fan of.

The first song that I heard by Iron Maiden was "Number of the Beast" - its awesomeness astounded me, and I became a huge fan of Iron Maiden's stuff from the early to mid 80s.

Another of mine would be "Kool Thing" by Sonic Youth - I just found it really catchy, but I appreciated the alternative tinge that it had to it. I would soon discover that there is literally NO OTHER song in the SY catalogue that sounds like Kool Thing, but I developed a taste for SY's weirdness, and they're one of my favourite bands today.

Staying with Alt rock, who can forget that wonderful moment when Fight Club ends, and you're like - holy shit, that was the best fucking movie ever... and then, in the midst of all this, a song comes on that is so fucking amazing, that you just can't believe you haven't heard it before. Of course, I'm referring to "Where is my Mind?" by Pixies - it was the first song I heard by them, and as I gradually became exposed to the rest of the Pixies catalogue, it was literally like discovering musical gold.

Another one of my favourite groups today is Radiohead, and although I love the complexity of albums like "OK Computer", their breakthrough radio hit "Creep" remains one of my all-time favourite songs. I just feel that I can relate to the lyrics, and despite its somewhat depressing nature, it always cheers me up.

Finally, the first Pink Floyd song I heard was "Speak to Me/Breathe" (first track of Dark side of the moon, go figure). I remember trying to listen to it when I was 12, and I just didn't get it. 5 years later, I downloaded Dark Side again and the music just blew me the fuck away.

The song that really got me into System of a Down was Chop Suey. It was the first time I'd ever heard them and it still remains one of my most favorite.

I remember many years ago I heard "Ice Queen" by Within Temptation who at the time were still relatively unheard of. It took me ages to track down the full album but when I did I was so impressed with it (though its a pity their later albums havent been as amazing - not bad, just not great).

Another good example was "My Heart, Your Hands" by Dommin; it was when I had emoness to have a myspace page and I fell plague to having random bands add me all the time. I decided to check out Dommin as it had a funky avatar thing and was stunned by how good the band actually was and went on to become a huge fan, buying their albums and tshirts. :)

My first SOAD song was Chic 'N' Stu, I looked them up and found out how good many of their songs actually are. Get back together, damn it!

The song that got me into Fallout Boy (stop judging me back there!) was Dance, Dance.

And to redeem myself in some peoples eyes, I got into Tenacious D after hearing Tribute.

And also Aqua Timez through Velonica.

So, yeah. Dance, Dance introduced me to Fallout Boy, Tribute is still my fav and Velonica is playing as I type this.

I get this with most bands, however it's normally simply a result of the best song being at the top of the youtube.com search results, or the only song from that band in a playlist.

Yes. Absolutely. The first song I hear by a band is usually what colours my impressions of them from there on out. If I love the first song, then I follow the band and find out more about these incredible musicians I've been missing out on for so long! This particularly happened when I heard Snowman - Zombies on the Airwaves of Paris for the first time.

A few of mine...

Sadly, she didn't live to see her fame.

This was the first violin concerto I ever heard, and I've loved them ever since. In fact I loved it so much I've put a deposit on a violin so I can learn how to play one as well as a piano, so that says something about how good it is! Technically it's a concerto for violin and viola, but you get my point. Go Mozart!

Well too lazy for videos but...

Slayer- Raining Blood
It was the first song I heard by them, I didn't like it. Then I listened to their other albums like my personal favourite: God Hates Us All. Now I love them, and somehow I like Raining Blood as well.

Iron Maiden-This one was either The Trooper or Number of the Beast. I can't remember which because I heard it when I was about 5 years old. My dad made sure I heard a lot of Metal as a child, and for that I love him. Needless to say, I still love Maiden and both of these songs.

Opeth- Blackwater Park
This was the first thing I heard by Opeth, I loved it. Opeth is now within my top two favourite bands.

Now for a change of genre...

The Strokes-Reptilia
This was thanks to Rock Band, I heard it, thought it was good so I looked up the band and now I have all their stuff.

Anyway I have like 100 some bands in my musical library so I'm just going to stop there.

Dont know how to put vids on but

Symphony X - Sea Of Lies
My friend told me about this band so I decided to check it out as he didn't lead me wrong before with Trivium. This song lead me to listen to more of them and I discovered epics like Paradise Lost, Church of the Machine, Smoke and Mirrors and In the Dragons Den.

Venom - Bloodlust
After reading about all the criticism about the deadly trio I decided to check them out so I should be certain. I was suprised and have stuck to Venom. Especially with Bloodlust, Black Metal, Witching Hour (My iTunes only has the Mayhem cover) and their new stuff as well.

Megadeth - Peace Sells
You know those guys that hate Megadeth and MegaDave just because of the bad blood for Metallica in the beggining. I was one of them. Listened to Peace Sells and others and saw the progressiveness of Megadeth's music compared to other thrash metal bands. Trying to get all of Dave's work.

Death - The Philosopher
I have heard Death songs before and they never really clicked with me (I was still a numetalcore tard back then). This song changed me. I woship Chuck Schuldiner now. Also check out his side project Control Denied.

Oh and Painkiller by Judas Priest. That is the shit.

I also like Hypnotise. "I'm just singing in my car and waiting for my..." Tune.

One: you have an amazing dad, I wish I had one like yours.

Two: Opeth is up there in at least my top five, if not higher. They're simply amazing.

I've got two pretty good examples...
The guitar hooked me the instant it kicked in, and the vocals just seemed to fit right in with everything about the song. I've probably listened to it over 100 times by now.
Now this song has a special place in my heart because of its wonderfully twisted lyrics.
The musical part of the song is really good too, but what really caught my attention was the chorus. It's...perfect.

Here's a few that I can remember:

Maximum the Hormone:

Slipknot:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jonFSTMrHhs&feature=related

Children of Bodom:

Those are the only specific songs I remember that got me into the particular band.
